  • This paper descirbes about effects of refraction of ultrasonic beam on B-mode tomogram. Both compution based on Snell's law and the experiments performed using B-mode scanner and schlieren optical method are discussed on a circular phantom immersed in water. In these results, if the discrepancy of sound velocity is more than 0. 6%, the distortion of the B-mode image becomes conspicuous and a target beyound the phantom may disappear or displayed as two targets depending on the velocity of the phantom.

  • A defect analysis program for a composite motor case was developed to apply the ultrasonic signal processing method, based on the ultrasonic pulse-echo method. With the proposed defect analysis program, defects of FRP delamination and FRP/Rubber disbond in the composite motor case could be quantitatively measured. The defects detected in the composite motor case were in good agreement with the results measured with the computed tomography and video microscope. This paper described the development process of the defect analysis program to convert the ultrasonic test data into the C-Scan images.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the time mean velocity distribution, the time mean kinetic energy, and the time mean turbulence intensity between vertical and horizontal flow fields in a coaxial circular pipe by PIV measurement. Experiments are performed at a Reynolds number 2,000, measuring regions divided as the section regions A, B, C, D in flow fields. The angle of the high-frequency ultrasonic is selected in the direction of $45^{\circ}$ to the flow axes and it is reflected several times. In results, it is clarified that the effect of gravity is given in the vertical flow field compared with the horizontal flow field and the ultrasonic affects the turbulence enhancement. And kinetic energy and turbulence intensity with ultrasonic are shown slightly bigger than those in flow field without it.

  • The phased array transducer has two distinct advantages. One is rapid scanning comparing with the conventional mechanical or manual scanning system. Therefore, output image is represented in real-time. The other is the dynamic focusing and the dynamic steering of ultrasonic beam. Only the delay times that are controlled electrically are used to focus and to steer beam without any lenses or wedges. In this study, the profile of the ultrasonic beam for the phased array transducer has been simulated in the Huygens principle with varying the inter-element spacing of the linear phased array transducer. From the result of this study, it was found that the ultrasonic beam spread wider as the inter-element spacing was decreased. However, the focusing effect was improved, even when the number of the element was not big. In addition, there was grating lobes that are constructed when the inter-element spacing is more than half wavelength. However, this grating lobe has lower amplitude than the main lobe.

  • This paper presents a sensor fusion method to recognize a cylindrical object a CCD camera, a laser slit beam and ultrasonic sensors on a pan/tilt device. For object recognition with a vision sensor, an active light source projects a stripe pattern of light on the object surface. The 2D image data are transformed into 3D data using the geometry between the camera and the laser slit beam. The ultrasonic sensor uses an ultrasonic transducer array mounted in horizontal direction on the pan/tilt device. The time of flight is estimated by finding the maximum correlation between the received ultrasonic pulse and a set of stored templates - also called a matched filter. The distance of flight is calculated by simply multiplying the time of flight by the speed of sound and the maximum amplitude of the filtered signal is used to determine the face angle to the object. To determine the position and the radius of cylindrical objects, we use a statistical sensor fusion. Experimental results show that the fused data increase the reliability for the object recognition.

  • The usefulness of a portable linear electronic scanner. B-mode ultrasonic machine, was evaluated for estimating the longissimus muscle area from ultrasonic measurement of the muscle depth in 22 live pigs. The electronic scanner was easy to operate for muscle measurements in live pigs, which did not have to be held but were caged. The cross-sectional images of longissimus muscle and covering muscles and fat appeared on the monitor with grey scale in real time. It was easy to identify the ultrasonograms of fat and muscular tissues because the images differed in the degree of the grey scale. The longissimus muscle had less echogenic image than the other muscles. The boundary lines between first, second or third layers of backfat and the longissimus muscle were distinct on the ultrasonogram. The ultrasonic measurement at the shoulder was not acceptable because of the unstable measurements and the complex tissue structure. The repeatabilities for the measurements of longissimus muscle depth at one-half body length and last rib were acceptable. The simple correlation coefficients between ultrasonic estimates of the muscle depth in live pigs and the actual areas in the carcass, were 0.50 and 0.55 at the last rib and the one-half body length, respectively. Therefore, those positions were similarly suitable to measure. The method of electronic scanner for determining longissimus muscle area from the muscle depth was suitable for practical use in the field because of the simple and inexpensive technique.

  • In the present study, $Ni-TiO_2$ composite coatings were electrodeposited in a sulfamate bath containing $TiO_2$ particles. The influence of the ultrasonic treatment on the co-deposition of $TiO_2$ particles in the coating and the hardness of the electrodeposited $Ni-TiO_2$ composite has been investigated. Three different ultrasonic treatments (pretreatment before the electrodeposition (pre-UT), pretreatment + applied during the electrodeposition (UT), and the electrodeposition without the ultrasonic treatment (w/o UT)) were performed. The $Ni-TiO_2$ composite coatings are characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), image analyzer, and hardness tester. Comparison of results indicates that the volume fraction is more important factor than the agglomerated particle size in terms of the strength improvement, and the strength of the electrodeposited $Ni-TiO_2$ composite coatings is enhanced with pre-UT condition.

  • A technical method of noise modeling and adaptive filtering reducing of speckle noise in ultrasonic medical images is presented. By adjusting the characteristics of the filer according to local statistics around each pixel of the image as moving windowing, it is possible to suppress noise sufficiently while preserve edge and other significant information required in diagnosis. Homogeneous factor(HF) from the noise models that enables the filter to recognize the local structures of the image is introduced, and an algorithm for determining the HF fitted to the diagnostic systems with various inner statistical properties is proposed. We show by the experimented that the performance of proposed method is superior to these of other filters and models in preserving small details and suppressing the noise at homogeneous region.

  • The present paper investigated the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on the melting process of a phase-change material (PCM). The melting process in the square cavity with a heated vertical wall has been studied in terms of acoustic streaming. In the present study, applying with ultrasonic vibrations to the liquid were found to induce acoustic streaming which was clearly observed using by a particle image velocimetry (PIV) and a thermal infrared camera. The experimental results revealed that acoustic streaming could accelerate the melting process as much as 2.5 times, compared to the rate of natural melting (i. e., the melting without acoustic streaming). In addition, temperature and Nusselt numbers over time provided conclusive evidence of the important role of the acoustic streaming on the melting phenomena of the PCM.
