초음파 펄스 에코 패턴으로 용접 결함 식별 방법 연구 (Study of the Weld Defects Identification Method by Ultrasonic Pulse Echo Patterns)

  • 본 연구에서는 초음파 탐상시험의 펄스 반사법으로 각각 용접결함에 따른 초음파 펄스파형모형을 연구하였다. 균열은 예리하고 선명한 신호들을 발생한다. 탐촉자를 결함주위로 이동하면 에코높이는 변한다. 긴 균열에서는 탐촉자가 결함 주위를 원형으로 목돌림주사법을 사용하여 탐상하면 에코높이는 급격히 감소한다. 그 에코 봉우리는 바늘과 같이 얇고 날카롭다. 기공은 단일 결함으로부터 발생하는 에코는 예리하고 선명하다 하지만 집단의 기공들은 다수의 반사들이 중첩되고 트레이스가 들쭉날쭉한 에코가 발생한다. 슬래그 개재물은 크랙과 슬래그 결함위치에서 각각 목돌림 주사법을 사용하여 탐상하면 그 에코형상은 어느 정도 차이를 볼 수 있었다. crack은 그 에코높이가 급격히 변하는 반면에 슬래그 개재물은 증가${\rightarrow}$감소${\rightarrow}$증가${\rightarrow}$감소된다. 또한 다수 밀집된 기공의 위치에서 결함은 대표적 에코형상과 같은 잡다한 에코형상은 슬래그에서는 볼 수 없었다. 용입불량은 결함의 에코형상은 크랙과 같이 날카롭고 예리하게 나타났고, crack과 비슷한 에코형상은 갖고 있었다.

  • Friction welding has emerged as a reliable process for high-production commercial applications with significant economic and technical advantages. But nondestructive test in friction weld was not clearly developed. Therefore the experimental verification is necessary in order to understand the characteristcs of the pulse echo effects according to various change in welding conditions. This paper presents an attempt to determine the relationship between the varios welding conditions and the coefficients of reflection using the ultrasonic pulse echo method in dissibilar metals friction weld. The new approach of calculating the coefficients of reflection based on measured amplitudes of the echoes is applied in this paper. These coefficients provides a single quantitative measurement which involves both acoustic energy reflected at the welded interface as well as transmitted across the interface. As a result, it was known that the quantitave relationship between welding conditions and the coefficients of reflection using the ultrasonic pulse echo exists in dissimilar metals friction weld.

Homogeneity of lightweight aggregate concrete assessed using ultrasonic-echo sensing

  • Dredged silt from reservoirs in southern Taiwan was sintered to make lightweight aggregates (LWA), which were then used to produce lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC).This study aimed to assess the compressive strength and homogeneity of LWAC using ultrasonic-echo sensing. Concrete specimens were prepared using aggregates of four different particle density, namely 800, 1100, 1300 and 2650 kg/$m^3$. The LWAC specimens were cylindrical and a square wall with core specimens drilled. Besides compressive strength test, ultrasonic-echo sensing was employed to examine the ultrasonic pulse velocity and homogeneity of the wall specimens and to explore the relationship between compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity. Results show that LWA, due to its lower relative density, causes bloating, thus resulting in uneven distribution of aggregates and poor homogeneity. LWAC mixtures using LWA of particle density 1300 kg/$m^3$ show the most even distribution of aggregates and hence best homogeneity as well as highest compressive strength of 63.5 MPa. In addition, measurements obtained using ultrasonic-echo sensing and traditional ultrasonic method show little difference, supporting that ultrasonic-echo sensing can indeed perform non-destructive, fast and accurate assessment of LWAC homogeneity.

  • 경수형 원자로의 운전과 안전성 해석을 위해 열수력학적 모형을 개발하는 것이 하나의 중요한 과제이다. 특히, 2상류의 열수력학적 모형을 개발하기 위해서는 기포율, 액체막 두께, 유동 영역과 같은 중요한 변수들을 실제로 측정한 값이 필요하다. 본 연구의 목적은 초음파 Pulse-echo 방법을 이용하여 액체 두께를 실험적으로 측정하고, 이론치와 비교 분석하여 (1) 관벽의 두께, (2) 초음파의 주파수, (3) 관벽의 재질 등이 액체막 두께 측정에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 데에 있다. 평판협 (Plate-type)과 관(Tube-type)으로 된 시험관을 이용하여 수평으로 놓인 물-공기의 층류계 (a horizontal airwater stratified system)를 만들어 일련의 액체막 두께 측정 실험을 수행하였다. 시험관의 벽 두께와 초음파 Pulse-echo 의 주파수를 변화시키면서 액체막 두께 측정을 반복하였다. 또한, 관벽의 acoustic impedance가 초음파 Pulse-echo 방법으로 액체막 두께를 측정할 때, 어떠한 영향을 주는가도 아울러 파악하기 위해서 스텐레스 강과 폴리아크릴 (Polyacrylate) 등 재질이 다른 두 개의 격리봉 (Standonff rod) 을 사용하여 액체막 두께를 측정하였다. 이렇게 하여 얻은 실험 결과를 제시하고 실제로 측정한 액체막 두께와 비교 분석하였다.

펄스압축 기술을 위한 chirp 신호의 최적대역폭 결정 (Determination of the Optimum-Bandwidth of Chirp-Signal for Pulse Compression Technique)

  • 본 논문에서는 chirp 신호를 초음파 신호처리 시스템에 입력시킬 때 반사신호의 진폭을 최대로 얻기위한 chirp 신호의 대역폭을 결정하는 방법을 연구하였다. 초음파 신호처리 시스템에서 반사신호의 S/N 비는 초음파의 전파시에 발생하는 감쇠와 산란에 의하여 매우 낮게된다. Chirp 신호를 사용한 펄스 압축기술은 초음파 반사시스템의 S/N 비를 증가시킬 수 있는 방법중 하나이다. 시뮬레이션 및 실험결과, chirp 신호의 펄스폭이 넓을수록 출력이 증가하였고 동일한 펄스폭과 주어진 초음파시스템의 대역폭에 대한 최대출력은 chirp 신호의 대역폭이 초음파시스템의 대역폭 보다 1.15배 클 때 얻어짐을 확인하였다.

A Study of the Couplant Effects on Contact Ultrasonic Testing

  • The amplitude of a back-wall echo depends on the reflection coefficient of the interface between a transducer and a test material when using contact pulse-echo ultrasonic testing. A couplant is used to transmit ultrasonic energy across the interface, but has an influence on the amplitude of the pulse-echo signal. To investigate the couplant effect on pulse-echo ultrasonic testing, back-wall echoes are measured by using various couplants made of water and glycerine in a carbon and austenitic stainless steel specimens. The amplitude of the first back-wall echo and the apparent attenuation coefficient increases with the acoustic impedance of the couplant. The couplant having a higher value of the transmission coefficient is more effective for flaw detection. The reflection coefficient should be known in order to measure the attenuation coefficient of the test material.

Corrosion visualization under organic coating using laser ultrasonic propagation imaging

  • Protective coatings are most widely used anticorrosive structures for steel structures. The corrosion under the coating damages the host material, but this damage is completely hidden. Therefore, a field-applicable under-coating-corrosion visualization method has been desired for a long time. Laser ultrasonic technology has been studied in various fields as an in situ nondestructive inspection method. In this study, a comparative analysis was carried out between a guided-wave ultrasonic propagation imager (UPI) and pulse-echo UPI, which have the potential to be used in the field of under-coating-corrosion management. Both guided-wave UPI and pulse-echo UPI were able to successfully visualize the corrosion. Regarding the field application, the guided-wave UPI performing Q-switch laser scanning and piezoelectric sensing by magnetic attachment exhibited advantages owing to the larger distance and incident angle in the laser measurement than those of the pulse-echo UPI. Regarding the corrosion visualization methods, the combination of adjacent wave subtraction and variable time window amplitude mapping (VTWAM) provided acceptable results for the guided-wave UPI, while VTWAM was sufficient for the pule-echo UPI. In addition, the capability of multiple sensing in a single channel of the guided-wave UPI could improve the field applicability as well as the relatively smaller size of the system. Thus, we propose a guided-wave UPI as a tool for under-coating-corrosion management.

Wavelet변환을 이용한 초음파 잡음신호의 제거에 관한 연구 (A Study on Suppression of Ultrasonic Background Noise Signal using wavelet Transform)

  • Recently, advance signal analysis which is called "Time-Frequency Analysis" has been developed. Wavelet and Wigner Distribution are used to the method. Wavelet transform(WT) is applied to time-frequency analysis of waveforms obtained by an ultrasonic pulse-echo technique. The Gabor function is adopted as the analyzing wavelet. Wavelet analysis method is an attractive technique for evolution of material characterization evoluation. In this paper, the feasibility of suppression of ultrasonic background noise signal using WT has been presented. These results suggest that ultrasonic background noise ginal can be suppressed and enhanced even for SNR of 20.8 dB. This property of the WT is extremely useful for the detecting flaw echos embedded in background noise.und noise.

평면 초음파를 이용한 미소 간극 측정 (Thickness Measurement of A Thin Layer Using Plane Ultrasonic waves)

  • This paper describes a new technique for thickness measurement of a very thin layer less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the thickness of a thin layer in a layered medium form the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the back side layer of interst. Thickness of a very thin layer few inch deep inside the media can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transducer over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a thin layer. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveform of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the thickness of the layer.

저어널 베어링의 진동 계측을 위한 초음파 응용 기술에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Ultrasonic Technique for Measurement of Vibration in Journal Bearing)

  • This paper describes a new technique for measurement of the displacement less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the displacement of a journal bearing from the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the surface of journal inside the bearing. Vibration of journal bearing can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transduce over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a small displacement. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveforms of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the vibration of journal bearing.
