  • An ultrasonic linear motor was composed of a slider and a stator vibrator including piezoelectric material and elastic material. The ultrasonic linear motors mainly consist of an ultrasonic vibrator which generates elliptical oscillations. L$_1$-B$_4$ ultrasonic linear motor use longitudinal and bending multi-vibration. In order to low driving voltage and improve the life time of the ultrasonic oscillator, we used stacked piezoceramics. Stacked piezoceramics are adhered to aluminum elastic material. The finite element method was used to optimize dimension of ultrasonic vibrator and direction of vibratory displacement. As a result of estimating the characteristics of the ultrasonic linear motor, no-load velocity was 2.04[m/s] when applied voltage was 70[V$\sub$rms/] in resonance frequency.

  • The ultrasonic motor used here is the windmill type ultrasonic motor operated by single-phase AC source. A metal-ceramic composite component was used as the stator element to generate ultrasonic vibrations. The windmill type ultrasonic motors has only three components; a stator element of two wind-mill shape slotted metal endcaps, a rotor and a bearing. In this paper we proposed a system for torque measurement of piezoelectric ultrasonic motor.

  • An ultrasonic motor is a motor which uses vibration -a type of elastic vibration- to obtain a driving force, which then drives the motor using friction. In this paper, mode conversion type - single resonance mode ultrasonic rotary motor that use langevin type ultrasonic vibrator was studied. This model was proposed for the first time by Japanese Kumada in 1985. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) of a stator and bidirectional driving characteristic of a rotor was newly obtained. The amplitude and phase of displacement and elliptical trajectory of beam was confirmed by FEA The fabricated motor was operated to clockwise and counterclockwise in 40.8 [kHz] and 44.2 [kHz] respectively. But bidirectional driving characteristics did not coincide each other.

  • Ultrasonic motor (USM) is a new type motor which is driven by the ultrasonic vibration of piezoelectric elements. It possess many useful features that electromagnetic motors do not have, such as low speed and high torque. However, ultrasonic motor has heavy nonlinear speed characteristics and is sensitive to the change of drive conditions. In order to solve these problems, we present a smooth position control scheme for ultrasonic motor using fuzzy logic control with human expertise and without the need of any precise mathematical model. A "smooth operation" consideration is included when constructing the fuzzy rule base in order to achieve a most smooth response. An experimental position control system is constructed to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

  • This paper describes with the stator analysis and design of a ring type ultrasonic motor. The design for piezoelectric ceramic and elastic body of stator were calculated by using the finite element method (FEM) that consider the resonance frequency, vibration mode and coupling efficiency. Namely, such results were acquired the calculation result of the piezoelectric ceramic thickness 0.5[mm], elastic body thickness 2.0[mm], resonance frequency 51.8[kHz], vibration mode 7 order and coupling efficient 12.5[%], the outer and inner diameter of vibrator 50[mm], 38[m]. On the basis of such result, the ring type ultrasonic motor was manufactured. Also for driving characteristics of ring type ultrasonic motor, 2-phase inverter was constructed. Then the propriety of this paper was established from comparision of the simulation and an experiment results of the ring type ultrasonic motor.

  • In this study, multilayer structured ultrasonic linear motor was simulated using Atila for investigating its optimum driving conditions. The ultrasonic linear motors mainly consist of an ultrasonic vibrator to generate elliptical displacement. The ultrasonic linear motor simulated in this paper was the use of the 1st longitudinal(Ll) and 4th bending vibrations (B4). Whit the increase of the number of piezoelectric actuator layers, displacement of node was increased. Maximum total displacement of node was about $3,91{\mu}m$ at the 13 layered ultrasonic motor under 5 V.

  • In this paper the relationship between the pressing force applied to rotors and the characteristics of ultrasonic motor are discussed. The characteristics of ultrasonic motor using a piezoelectric vibrator were systematically studied. And these were applied to the construction of a card forwarding device. The principle of ultrasonic motor is to use an elliptical motion generated on the side of the vibrator, and the elliptical motion of the ultrasonic motor was obtained by complex oscillation of $L_1-B_4$ mode. As the experimental results. the forwarding speed of the card increased linearly as the pressing force applied to rotors increased. The forwarding speed of the card was 16.0 cm/s when the pressing force applied to rotors was 1 N. The forwarding force of the card increased linearly as the pressing force applied to rotors increased. The forwarding force of the card was 398 mN when the pressing force applied to rotors was 1 N. Therefore, this ultrasonic motor can be expected to be used for card-forwarding device and so on.

  • In this study, the wind-mill type ultrasonic motor was fabricated, and then revolution and temperature characteristics of the ultrasonic motor were measured. Brass metal was pressed with umbrella-type using metal mold, then slot of 4 kind was processed in each of thickness. Among sixteen's ultrasonic motors, heat loss on applied voltage was much at stator of the highest resonant point, but heat loss on applied voltage was almost neglected at the lowest resonant point of stator. The thickener thickness of elastic body, revolution speed was decreased. The more slot of elastic body, revolution speed was increased. Applied voltage was changed from $10V_{max}$ to $100V_{max}$. When applied voltage was under $20V_{max}$, ultrasonic motor was not rotated. When applied voltage was over $90V_{max}$, revolution of ultrasonic motor was saturated. Maximum revolution speed was 510[rpm].

  • We have been designed and fabricated a bi-directional ultrasonic linear motor using piezoelectric ceramics. With the finite element method, we design and verify validity of the structure, and determine its optimal structure, size of design variables, material and boundary conditions for proper generation of the ultrasonic waves. Based on the design, a prototype of the ultrasonic linear motor has been fabricated and characterized, which thereby proves practical applicability of this new motor.

  • Endoscopes for industrial and medical fields are expected to have multi degree-of-freedom (DOF) motions. A multi-DOF ultrasonic motor we developed consists of a spherical rotor and a bar-shaped stator, and the rotor rotates around three perpendicular axes using three natural vibration modes of the stator. In this study, a multi-DOF unilateral master-slave system for active endoscope using the multi-DOF ultrasonic motor is developed. The configurations of master and slave arms for active endoscope are similar, so that an operator can easily handle the master-slave system. First, driving characteristics of the multi-DOF ultrasonic motor are measured in order to design the slave arm and its controller. Next, the master arm and the slave arm are designed. Then, the unilateral feedback controller for the master-slave system is developed. Finally, the motion control tests of rotor are conducted. As a result, the possibility of the endoscope is confirmed.
