In forest products industry, a variety of nondestructive evaluation techniques are now being used to assess the mechanical properties of structural lumber. Ultrasonic and longitudinal vibration technique are frequently used to assess the modulus of elasticity(MOE) of lumber. The objective of this research was to evaluate the MOE and modulus of rupture(MOR) of small-diameter of Larix log(Larix kaempferi Carr.), using these techniques. In this study, 50 small-diameter logs were nondestructiveively evaluated. The dynamic modulus of elasticity(Eu) of the logs was first evaluated, using an ultrasonic method. After ultrasonic tests, the logs were measured using a longitudinal vibration technique(Ev). Static bending test was then performed on the logs to obtain the static modulus of elasticity(Es) and modulus of rupture of these logs. In general, the dynamic MOE (Ev) of logs was closely co..elated with the stati, MOE for log. Based on the results of these experiments, it can be concluded that small-diameter Larix logs can be successfully evaluated by Ultrasonic and longitudinal vibration technique. The experimental results indicated that the ultrasonic technique is effective to the log, which contains many knots. The longitudinal vibration technique is effective to the log, in which many cracks are included.

A nondestructive evaluation technique for detecting internal defects of an hot forged Al-Si alloy part is established in this study. Ultrasonic characteristics of various internal planar defects are investigated by experiments for establishing a reliable test procedure. The effect of the angle between ultrasonic energy propagation directions and planar defects on the ultrasonic signal configuration is evaluated in the pulse-echo technique. A characteristic of ultrasonic signal for the internal planar defect located near the edge is also evaluated. The applicability of the through-transmission technique is also discussed. Reliability of the presented approach is validated by the destructive testing for more than 500 specimens.

Ultrasonic velocities are widely used in the investigation of material properties. In this paper, a micromechanics model and the ultrasonic velocity were used to develop a nondestructive method to determine the density variation due to porosity in structural SiC. The micromechanics model developed can consider the pore shape and orientation. The model also takes into account the interaction between pores so that it can be applied to the material with high porosity content. A contact pulse overlap method was used to measure the ultrasonic velocities of porous SiC samples, and there was a linear correlation between the velocity and density (or porosity). Using the model and the measured velocity, the bulk density can be easily calculated. The calculated density was in good agreement with that obtained by Archimedes' method.

It is well recognized that ultrasonic technique is one of the most common and reliable nondestructive evaluation techniques for quantitative estimation of defects in structures. For the quantitative and accurate estimation of internal defects. the characteristics of scattered ultrasonic wavefields must be understood. In this study. the scattered near-field and far-field due to a circular cavity embedded in infinite media subjected to incident SH-waves were calculated by the boundary element method. The frequency response of the scattered ultrasonic far-field was transformed into the time-domain signal by obtaining its inverse Fourier transform. It was found that the amplitude of time-domain signal decreases and its time delay increases as the distance between the detecting point of ultrasonic scattered field and the center of internal cavity increases.

Composite wood materials are very sensitive to water and inspection without any coupling medium of a liquid is really needed to wood materials due to the permeation of coupling medium such as water. However, air-coupled ultrasound has obvious advantages over water-coupled experimentation compared with conventional C-scanner. In this work, it is desirable to perform contact-less nondestructive evaluation to assess wood material homogeneity. A wood material was nondestructively characterized with non-contact and contact modes to measure ultrasonic velocity using automated data acquisition software. We have utilized a proposed peak-delay measurement method. Also through transmission mode was performed because of the main limitation for air-coupled transducers, which is the acoustic impedance mismatch between most materials and air. The variation of ultrasonic velocity was found to be somewhat difference due to air-coupled limitations over conventional scan images. However, conventional C-scan images are well agreed with increasing the resin-infiltrated time as expected. Finally, we have developed a measurement system of an ultrasonic velocity based on data acquisition software for obtaining ultrasonic quantitative data for correlation with C-scan images.

Flaw classification and sizing are very essential issues in quantitative ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of various materials and structures including weldments. For performing of these tasks in an automated fashion, we are developing an intelligent ultrasonic evaluation system with a multi-axis portable scanner which can do consistent and efficient acquisition and processing of ultrasonic flaw signals. Here we present our efforts to develop of this intelligent system including design of the portable scanner, acquisition and processing of ultrasonic flaw signals, display of pseudo 3-D image of flaws, and classification and sizing of flaws in weldments.

This research investigates the feasibility of ultrasonic microscope for nondestructive assessment of thermal degradation in artificially aged commercial Co-base superalloy, FSX414. This alloy has been used for high temperature structure applications such as stationary gas turbine blade and nozzle chamber in fossil plant. Microstructural change was found that the fine carbides became coarser and spheroidized in matrix as aging time increased. The leaky surface acoustic wave velocity gradually decreases by a maximum of 4.7% with increasing aging time up to 4,000hours. However, the longitudinal wave velocity has a little change. Also, it has a good correlation between leaky surface acoustic wave velocity and Vickers hardness. Consequently, LSAW can be used to examine the degree of degradation in thermally aged Co-base superalloy.

One approach to testing the suitability of a adhesive joint for a particular application is to build and test to destruction of a representative sample of the joint. The nondestructive test will not measure strength directly but will measure a parameter which can be correlated to the strength. It is therefore, essential that a suitable nondestructive test is chosen and its results are correctly interpreted. In this paper, typical ultrasonic signal analysis in adhesive joints are evaluated together with interface stress from the result of finite element analysis.

MFL method is a qualitative inspection tool and is a reliable, fast and economical NDT method. The application of MFL method to the inspection of storage tank floor plates has been shown to be a viable means. Examination of tank floors previously depended primarily upon ultrasonic test methods that required slow and painstaking application. Therefor most ultrasonic inspection of storage tank has been limited to spot testing only. Our NDE group have developed magnetic flux leakage system to overcome limitation of ultrasonic test. The developed system consists of magnetic yoke, array sensor, crawler and software. It is proved that the system is able to detect artificial flaw like 3.2mm diameter, 1.2mm depth in 6mm thick steel plate.

Quality evaluation of agricultural products has been a subject of interest to many researches for many years. As a results, several nondestructive techniques for quality evaluation of agricultural products have been developed. These methods are based on the detection of various physical properties that correlate well with certain quality factors of the products. This paper presents an overview of various quality evaluation techniques that are based on one of the following properties : density, firmness , vibration characteristic , X-ray and gamma ray transmission, optical reflectance and transmission , electrical properties, aromatic volatile emission, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The sophistication of nondestructive methods has evolved rapidly with modern technologies. The use of various modern image acquisition techniques, such as solid state TV camera, line-scan camera, X-ray scanning , ultrasonic scanning and NMR imaging, in conjunction with image-processing te hniques has provided new opportunities for researchers to develop many new and improved techniques for nondestructive quality evaluation of agricultural products.
