This study was carried out as one of efforts to overcome difficulties in air bearing design due to low stiffness and low damping. Hydrodynamic effects on hydrodynamic stiffness of a fluid film in a high speed air bearing with tow-row air sources are investigated. The hydrodynamic effects by the high speed over DN 1,000,000 and eccentricity of a proceeding which are not considered in conventional design of an air bearing need to be reconsidered. The hydrodynamic effects, which dominantly influence on the load capacity of air bearing, are caused mainly by proceeding speed, eccentricity, and the source positions. The two-row source arrangement in the air bearing produces quite unique hydrodynamic effects with respect to pressure distribution of the air film. Optimal arrangement of the two-row sources improves performance of an air bearing in film reaction force and loading capacity of high speed spindles. This study compares the pressure distribution by numerical simulation as a function of eccentricity of proceeding and the source positions. The air source position 1/7L form one end of an air bearing was found to be superior to source position of 1/4L. The dynamic stiffness were obtained using a two-dimensional cutting method which can directly measure the cutting reaction forces and the displacements of the spindle in two directions using a tool dynamometer and transducer sensors. Heat generation in the air film can not be negligible over the speed of DN 2,000,000. In order to analysis effects of heat generation on the characteristics of air bearing, high cooling bearing spindle and low cooling bearing spindle were tested and compared. Characteristics of the frequency response of shaft and motion of run out errors were different for the spindle. The test results show that, in the case of low cooling bearing spindle, the stiffness became smaller due to heat generation. The results, which were obtained for high speed region, may be used as a design information for spindle which can be applied to precision devices such as ultra precision grinding and ultra high speed milling.
This paper has been presented the hydrodynamic effect by the journal speed, eccentricity and source positions in order to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficient. Choosing the two row source position of air bearing is different from existed investigations in the side of pressure distribution of air film because of the high speed of journal and the wedge effects by the eccentricity. These optimal chooses of the two row source positions enable us to improve the performance of the film reaction force and loading force as making the high speed spindle. In this paper, the pressure behavior in theory of air film according to the eccentricity of journal and the source positions analyzed. The theoretical analysis have been identified by experiments. The results of investigated characteristics may be applied to precision devices like ultra-precision grinding machine and ultra high speed milling.
The liquid-phase sintering method was used to prepare a glass lens forming core composed of SiC-$Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$. Spark plasma sintering was used to obtain dense sintered bodies. The sintering characteristics of different SiC sources and compositions of additives were studied. Results revealed that, owing to its initial larger surface area, $\alpha$-SiC offers sinterability that is superior to that of $\beta$-SiC. A maximum density of $3.32\;g/cm^3$ (theoretical density [TD] of 99.7%) was obtained in $\alpha$-SiC-10 wt% ($6Al_2O_3-4Y_2O_3$) sintered at $1850^{\circ}C$ without high-energy ball milling. The maximum hardness and compression stress of the sintered body reached 2870 Hv and 1110 MPa, respectively. The optimum ultra-precision machining parameters were a grinding speed of 1243 m/min, work spindle rotation rate of 100 rpm, feed rate of 0.5 mm/min, and depth of cut of $0.2\;{\mu}m$. The surface roughnesses of the thus prepared final products were Ra = 4.3 nm and Rt = 55.3 nm for the aspheric lens forming core and Ra = 4.4 nm and Rt = 41.9 for the spherical lens forming core. These values were found to be sufficiently low, and the cores showed good compatibility between SiC and the diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating material. Thus, these glass lens forming cores have great potential for application in the lens industry.
This study focused on the application of ELID mirror-surface grinding technology to the manufacture of off-axis asymmetric large-area reflecting mirrors made of BK7 glass. The size of the parts, such as asymmetric large-area mirrors or lens, made form-accuracy or roughness especially hard to measure after machining because of the measuring range limit of measurement devices. In this study, the ELID grinding system has been set up for mirror-surface machining experiments manufacturing off-axis asymmetric lenses. A measuring method using a reference workpiece has been suggested to measure the form-accuracy and roughness. According to the experimental results, even when using only a reference workpiece, it is confirmed that the surface roughness was 8 nmRa and form-accuracy was 80 nmRMS, with a best fit asymmetric radius when using a grinding wheel of #8,000. It is found that the accuracy of large-area parts could be estimated by the proposed process.
There are many difficulties in automatic polishing for die & mold surfaces. Even though the process has been studied in the past 15 years, it has not been achieved yet, but by the process of actual hand work of well-skilled workers. A new magentic assisted polishing process, which is one of the potential method for automation of surface finishing has been studied in the past 10 years by colleagues. The process has many merits, but on the other hand also has demerits, one being low efficiency of gridability by comparision with grinding wheel polish. Therefore, some attempts were tried to improve the grindability by adopting electropolishing, ultra-high speed milling, 5-axis controlled machine etc... most recently by collegues. This study also aims to improve the efficiency of polishing by introducing the easily-polished shape surface milling method equalizing the tool feed per tooth to the pick feed. This milling method was experimentally confirmed to have sufficient grindability to polish milled surface (with 10 .mu. mRmax surface roughness) into mirror surface (with 0.4 .mu. mRmax surface roughness).
Aspheric glass lens have recently been used in camera phone module because they are more effective than spherical ones. In this paper, the grinding condition of the tungsten carbide molding core has been found after applying DOE to the development of the aspheric glass lens for the 3 Megapixel and 2.5x camera-phone module. Also, the ultra precision grinding process was investigated under this condition by experiment. Re-Ir coating was applied on the ground surface of the tungsten carbide molding core. The influence of Re-Ir coating on the form accuracy and surface roughness of molding core was compared and evaluated. The form accuracy and surface roughness of the molding core were improved by application of Re-Ir coating on the surface of the tungsten carbide molding core.
The magnetic polishing is the useful method to finish using magnetic power of a magnet. The time hasn't been that long since the magnetic polishing method was introduced to korea as one of precision polishing techniques. However, the reasons for not being spreaded widely are the magnetic polishing method don't have mediocrity for machine, the efficiency of magnet-abrasive is confined as a bad polishing, and there are not many researchers in this field. The mechanism of this R&D is dealing with the dynamic state of magnet-abrasive. This paper deals with mediocritizing magnetic polishing device into regular lathe and this experiment was conducted in order to get a best surface roughness with low cost. Beside the subsidiary experiment was performed using the mixed magnet-abrasive with general alumina, barium. This paper introduced the main reason for difficulty using this method in industrial field. It needs more continues research on it. This paper contains the result of experiment to acquire the best surface roughness, not using the high-cost polishing material in processing. The average diameters of magnet-abrasive are the particles of 150 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 250 $\mu\textrm{m}$.
There have been intensive and continuous efforts in the field of DLC coating process because of their feature, like high hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance and chemical stability and have been applied widely the industrial areas. In this research, optimal grinding condition was investigated using Microlens Process Machine for the development of aspheric glass lens which is to be used for mobile phone module with 3 mega pixel and 2.5X optical zoom, and tungsten carbide(WC) mold cote was manufactured using high performance ultra precision machining and the effects of DLC coating on the form accuracy(PV) and surface roughness(Ra) of WC mold core was evaluated.
