  • For the prediction of sloshing in the propellant tank of rocket vehicle utilized in RVT (reusable rocket vehicle testing) conducted by ISAS/JAXA, the flow field in the propellant tank during the ballistic flight was experimentally reproduced with the sub-scale model of it. The lateral acceleration as large as about 0.8 G was provided with a mechanical exciter and the deformation of liquid surface in the vessel was visualized with a high-speed camera. The several con-figurations of damping devices were installed and tested in the vessel, which should keep the ullage gas away from the outlet port. It was consequently suggested that the combination of a baffle plate and a perforated cylinder could be effective against the gas suction before the re-ignition of the engine. The sloshing phenomena were also simulated with the CFD code, called CIP-LSM. The numerical results showed good agreement with the corresponding data obtained in the experiment.

  • Propellant pressurization system in liquid rocket propulsion system plays a role in supplying pressurant gas at a controlled pressure into the ullage space of propellant tanks. The most important design parameter for such propellant pressurization system is the temperature of pressurant gas fed from pressurant tank, which is placed inside of cryogenic propellant tank. Such pressurant is gaseous state, of which density is very sensitive to the temperature of pressurant. Previous investigation dealt with thermal correlation of pressurant and external fluid at room temperature. This study investigates the temperature variation of cryogenic pressurant (GHe) at the time when the pressurant is coming out of pressurant tank, which is submerged in a liquid oxygen, experimentally as well as numerically.

  • A 2-way solenoid valve regulates to maintain the pressure of ullage volume of propellant tanks when the command is given by control system for the liquid-propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle. The simulation model of solenoid valve for pressurization is designed with AMESim to verify the designs and evaluate the dynamic characteristics and pneumatic behaviors of valve. To validate a valve simulation model, the simulation results of their operating durations of valve by AMESim analysis are compared with the results of experiments. Using the model, we analyze performance of valve; opening/closing pressure, operating time on various design factors; shape of control valve seat, basic valve seat, rate of sealing diameter. This study will serve as one of reference guides to enhance the developmental efficiency of ventilation-relief valves with the various operating conditions, which shall be used in Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II.

  • The pressurization system in a liquid rocket propulsion system provides a controlled gas pressure in the ullage space of the vehicle propellant tanks. It is advantage to employ a hot gas heat exchanger in the pressurization system to increase the specific volume of the pressurant and thereby reduce over-all system weight. Therefore a significant improvement in pressurization system performance can be achieved, particularly in a cryogenic system. For this study air and $CN_2$ are employed as external fluid and pressurant respectively Numerical analysis on the pressurant discharging characteristics have been compared with the experimental results performed at the PTF(Propellant-feeding Test Facility). It is shown that the discrepancy of analytic and experimental results is within about ${\pm}15%$. It is estimated that the temperature drop rate of cryogenic pressurant immersed liquid oxygen can be predicted using this analytic approach method.

  • A ventilation-relief valve performs as a safety-valve assembly for the liquid-propellant feeding system of space launch vehicle. This valve plays a role of relieving the vaporized propellants from propellant tanks during the filling and storing stages of propellants. Also it regulates to maintain the pressure of ullage volume of on-board propellant tanks within the safety-margin during the flight. The simulation model of ventilation-relief valve is designed with AMESim to predict and evaluate the dynamic characteristics and pneumatic behaviors of valve. To validate a valve simulation model, the simulation results of the opening and closing pressures and their operating durations of valve by AMESim analysis are compared with the results of mathematical methods. In addition, the results of internal flow simulation with FLUENT are utilized to improve the accuracy of valve-modeling. This study will serve as one of reference guides to enhance the developmental efficiency of ventilation-relief valves with the various operating conditionss, which shall be used in Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II.

  • In this paper, the energy flows related to cryogenic propellant tank ullage were understood and pressurization efficiency of the tank was calculated using propellant feeding test data with the help of calculation program. The related energy flow terms and calculation method of each terms were described. Three test data of different tank pressure and incoming pressurant temperature were used. Under the test conditions, the pressurization efficiency was low in the range of 13.9%~19.3%. The proportion of energy loss to the incoming pressurant energy was in the range of 55.2%~67.6%. The energy loss to the propellant tank wall was the biggest one. If the temperature of incoming pressurant was the same, the rates of each energy flows to the incoming energy were almost the same regardless of the propellant tank pressure. The collapse factor of propellant tank was calculated using test data, and the relation of it to the heat loss rate was observed.

  • In this paper the Chemical Propulsion Subsystem of COMS is briefly explained and some telemetries acquired by a series operations of CPS during the Launch and Early Operation Phase of COMS are presented. The pressure and temperature of pressurant tank telemetries are compared with the results of the developed computer program. The changes in pressure are due to the two major phases. The first one is the initialization phases of CPS composed of the venting phase to vent the helium gas in the pipe network from the downstream of the propellant tanks to the thrusters for safety, the priming phase to fill the vented pipe network with oxidizer and fuel respectively and then the pressurization phase to pressurize the ullage of propellant tank to regulated pressure. And the other is the apogee engine firings in which COMS CPS is in the orbit raising phase to use helium as a pressurant to keep the pressure of propellant tank as the liquid apogee engine get fired until COMS reached to the target orbit. This program can be applicable to prepare basis design data of the next Geostationary Satellite CPS.

The most important design parameter for such propellant pressurization system is the temperature of pressurant gas fed from pressurant tank. Such pressurant is gaseous state, of which density is very sensitive to the temperature of pressurant. Generally for the propulsion system, which requires high thrust and is consisted of cryogenic propellant the pressurant is stored at high density and high pressure to reduce the weight of pressurant tanks, which are placed inside of cryogenic propellant tank. That is called cryogenic storage pressurization system. This study investigates the temperature variation of pressurant at the time when the pressurant is coming out of pressurant tank experimentally as well as numerically. Fluids used in this study are air and liquid oxygen as outer fluid and gaseous nitrogen and gaseous helium as pressurant respectively.

  • The prelaunch thermal transients in the cryogenic oxidizer tank of liquid propulsion rocket subjected to uniform heat flux from outside are numerically analyzed through thermodynamic equations and heat and mass transfer relations. The prelaunch stage is assumed to be composed of five idealized sub-stages including pressurization process by helium gas injection. The Peng-Robinson equation of state is utilized in the lumped analysis of ullage gas. The liquid region is divided into a number of horizontal layers of uniform properties to account for the thermal stratification. The computational result for the typical case shows that the temperature rise of liquid oxidizer is less than 1K and the adsorbed helium into the liquid is approximately 10g.
