Background: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ASD) is caused by the involuntary contraction of laryngeal muscles due to dystonia localized to the larynx. In the case of ASD, conventional treatment is mainly performed with a botulinum toxin injection. However, the botulinum toxin injection has a short-lasting effect and requires repeated injections. Alternatives are needed due to concerns over adverse effects, such as general weakness and airway aspiration caused by the botulinum toxin injection. Case report: A 46-year-old female patient with ASD complained of voice tremor and hoarseness. The combined Korean medical treatments-Ukgan-san-gami, Jakyakgamcho-tang, acupuncture, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)-were administered on the first day the patient was hospitalized. The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) was evaluated during the treatment. The VHI taken on the second day totaled 92 points. On the ninth day, 81 points were recorded. Total score gradually improved, and on the 16th day, 62 points were recorded. Combined Korean medical treatment lasted 19 days. Conclusion: The present case report suggests that a combined Korean medical treatment approach with Ukgan-san-gami, Jakyakgamcho-tang, acupuncture, and TENS might be effective for symptoms such as voice tremors and hoarseness. Combined Korean medical treatment can be a therapeutic option for patients with ASD.

Objectives: This case report intended to examine how herbal medicine treatment for breathingrelated sleep disorders applied with polysomnography affected the structure of sleep. Methods: From January to November 2019, we retrospectively reviewed the progress records and polysomnography reports of patients who visited Korean medical hospitals in Daejeon and Cheonan. Results: In case 1, the patient complained of daytime sleepiness and snoring and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea disorder and treated with Ukgan-san-gami. There were significant changes in the polysomnographic parameters, such as sleep efficiency, waking after sleep onset, sleep latency, the total arousal index, and the apnea-hypopnea index after herbal treatment. In case 2, the patient complained of frequent waking after sleep onset, daytime sleepiness, and snoring, and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea disorder and treated with Yeoldahanso-tang-gami. There were significant changes in the polysomnographic parameters, such as the total arousal index and the apnea-hypopnea index after herbal treatment. In case 3, the patient complained of daytime sleepiness and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea disorder and treated with Bangpungtongsung-san. There was no significant change in the polysomnographic parameters after herbal treatment. Conclusions: It is meaningful to note that objectively identifying the outcome of treatment for breathing-related sleep disorders is necessary in the clinical practice of Korean medicine.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of Korean medicine in a patient with sensory disturbance of the hands and feet diagnosed as hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease). Methods: A patient diagnosed with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease) was treated with herbal medicine (Uchashinki-hwan-gami, Bosinji Granule, Ukgan-san-gami), acupuncture, moxibustion, and bee venom pharmacopuncture. Clinical improvements were evaluated using the numerical rating scale (NRS) and Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score system (TCNSS). Results: Improvements in the total scores of NRS and TCNS were observed after Korean medicine treatments. NRS score decrease from 8 to 2, and TCNS score decreased from 10 to 7. Conclusion: Korean medicine treatment may be effective for sensory disturbance in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease).
