  • While ubiquitous healthcare (u-health) services were expected to propagate along with conventional healthcare services, recent progress indicated rather limited market acceptance. In this paper, we investigated the fundamental causes of why the consumer acceptance level of u-health services has been low. We draw upon innovation adoption theories to analyze the consumer readiness of the typical u-health services. The comparative analysis between innovative u-health services and conventional services was performed using analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Subsequently, policy and business implications including technological breakthrough insights were discussed based on the customer perspective comparative adoption analysis. The propositions captured through this study provide useful insight to further studies on u-health services.

  • Healthcare is a research field suitable for applying the recent ubiquitous techniques. As a test system, we developed a kind of CDSS (Clinical Decision Support System) running in ubiquitous environment. called as 'uCDSS'. The uCDSS is a core system of the ubiquitous healthcare and is composed of some 'uMLMs(Ubiquitous Medical Logic Modules)'. The uMLMs based on the class in C# programming language could be reused in development of CDSS, or another EHR system running in .NET environment. As a test system, we developed the DM(Diabetes Mellitus knowledge system using ASP.NET. This system shows the potential of C# class-based uMLMs and the extensibility to any .NET development project.

  • The fusion technology of small sensor and wireless communication was followed by various application examples of the embedded system, where the social infrastructural facilities and ecological environment were wirelessly monitored. In addition, this technology represents the primary application area being extended into the healthcare field. In this study, a body area network for ubiquitous healthcare is presented. More specifically this represents a wireless biomedical signal acquisition device characterized by small size, low power consumption, pre-processing and archiving capability. Using this device, a new method for monitoring vital signs and activity is created. A PDA-based wireless sensor network enables patients to be monitored during their daily living, without any constraints. Therefore, the proposed method can be used to develop Activities of Daily Living (ADL) monitoring devices for the elderly or movement impaired people. A medical center would be able to remotely monitor the current state of elderly people and support first-aid in emergency cases. In addition, this method will reduce medical costs in society, where the average life expectancy is increasing.

  • An ubiquitous healthcare monitoring system for elderly person at home was designed for continuous healthy monitoring of elderly person or patients. Human vital signals, such as ECG and body temperature, were monitored by terminal PC or PDA via ECG and temperature sensor nodes on the patient's body. From the ECG data, the heart rate, tachycardia, bradycardia and arrhythmia were diagnosed on the terminal PC or PDA to assist doctor's or nurse's aid or patient itself to monitor the patient's condition and give medical examination. Artificial judgement support system was designed in server computer and the system support a doctor or nurser for management or treatment of the patient. This system can be applied to vital signal monitoring system for solitude elderly person at self house or home health care service part. And this ubiquitous healthcare system can reduce the medical expenses in coming aging or aged society.

  • In the ubiquitous healthcare, automated diagnosis is commonly achieved by an agent system to provide intelligent decision support and fast diagnosis result. Mobile agent technology is used for efficient load distribution by migrating processes to a less loaded node which is considered in our design of a ubiquitous healthcare system. This paper presents a framework for ubiquitous healthcare technologies which mainly focuses on mobile agents that serve the on-demand processes of an automated diagnosis support system. Considering the efficient utilization of resources, a balanced clustering for the load distribution of processes within nodes is proposed. The proposed algorithm selects overloaded nodes to migrate processes to near nodes until the load variance of the system is minimized. Our proposed balanced clustering efficiently distributes processes to all nodes considering message overheads by performing the migration to the near nodes.

  • With the advances in ubiquitous service infrastructure, healthcare services have drawn attention as one of promising application domains. In ubiquitous healthcare services, patients or care-givers as well as medical personnel are asked to play their roles and, in addition, the information system is supposed to have active roles. In medicine, clinical protocols have been developed and put into practice in order to reduce treatment variances and assure the service quality. In the same token, clinical protocols on ubiquitous service practices are need to be developed which takes into account both the clinical details and the ubiquitous service functionality. This paper introduces a clinical protocol modeling methodology which pays attention to participants and their tasks including contextual information. The proposed method has been successfully applied to a real application domain, OAB(overactive bladder) syndrome patient care to see how it builds a clinical protocol.

  • With mobile computing, wireless sensor network and sensor technologies, ubiquitous computing services are being realized and could satisfy the feasibility of ubiquitous healthcare to everyone. This u-Healthcare service can improve life quality of human since medical service can be provided to anyone, anytime, and anywhere. To confirm the vision of u-Healthcare service, we've implemented a healthcare system for heart disease patient which is composed of two components. Front-end collects various signals such as temperature, blood pressure, SpO2, and electrocardiogram, etc. As a backend, medical information server accumulates sensing data and performs back-end processing. To simply transfer these sensing values to a medical team may be too trivial. So, we've designed a model based on context awareness for more improved medical service which is based on artificial neural network. Through rigid experiments, we could confirm that the proposed system can provide improved medical service.

  • Purpose: The rapid change to an aging society generates an increase in the incidence of chronic diseases. Many chronic patients have been facing their illnesses without enough preparation. In order to solve these problems, we designed and tested a public healthcare service based on ubiquitous technology. Method: Telemedicine has emerged as new medical care system of chronic disease. However, public potential of its technology is difficult to know under current traditional health care system. In this work, we developed a Personal Digital Access (PDA) phone based healthcare system by trained visiting nurses for elderly patients. A field test was performed by SeongBuk Public Health Center in Seoul, Republic of Korea (ROK). Result: Surveys were generated to assess the effects of this system compared to conventional public health system. Findings of trials demonstrate that healthcare coordination enhanced by PDA phone technology is satisfactory to the patients and nurses compared to previous one because prompt responses arouse their recognition of health. Conclusion: Ubiquitous healthcare system applied to public health service proved to be efficient and time-saving to monitor and control the chronic illnesses of large population.

  • Healthcare and wellness industries have become more promising as the interests on healthy living increase. Not only the medical care oriented services for the patients done by medical centers but also the psychological and emotional healthgiving services for the people who are normal have been being stressed. The psychological and emotional healthgiving services should be executed in an agile and timely manner to maximize its effects. This paper aims to propose an emotion healing service spaces which are able to provide the normal people with psychological care services. To achieve the goals, we invented the tripot approach : the ubiquitous computing technology for context-aware and intelligent estimation of psychological index, LED technology to implement emotional atmosphere and wellness healthcare technology. The proposed architecture has been implemented in an actual site.
