  • An antioxidative compound was isolated from pine needles. This compound was identified as 4-hydroxy-5-methyl-3[2H]-furanone on the basis of spectroscopic evidences. It scavenged 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radicals more efficiently than maltol and tocopherol did. It exhibited an inhibitory effect on the lipid peroxidation of rat liver microsome induced by Fe(ll)/ascorbate, and the protective effect against UV cytotoxicity in cultured human fibroblasts. In addition, HMF appeared to prevent the cellular melanogenesis in the cultured murine melanoma cells, more effectively than kojic acid, a well known inhibitor of melanogenesis, while the former was not so effective as the latter for the inhibilion of the tyrosinase. Considering that cellular melanogenesis is a metabolic process triggered by oxidative stress, it was tentatively deduced that the antioxidative property of HMF may afford the effect against cellular pigmentation by alleviating the causative stress. This study provided a novel inhibitor of melanogenesis, that might be useful for the cosmetic applications.

  • Subphthalocyanine (SubPc) derivatives consisting of the different kinds and positions of substitute group were successfully synthesized using various types of the precursor as the intermediate compound. The chemical structure of precursor and product was determined by the means of $^{1}H-NMR$ and FT-IR spectrometer. Also, spectroscopic and crystalline properties were determined by means of UV-Vis spectrometer and XRD, respectively. It was found that SubPc derivatives absorbed selectively visible light ranging from 560 to 600 nm, their solubility was enhanced by introducing substitute groups, and their maximum absorbing wavelength was shifted by changing the kind and position of substitute groups.

  • Micro hollow cathode discharges (MHCDs) are high-pressure, non-equilibrium discharges. Those MHCDs are useful to produce an excimer radiation. A major advantage of excimer sources is their high internal efficiency which may reach values up to 40% when operated under optimum conditions. To produce strong excimer radiation, the optimisation of the discharge conditions however needs a detailed knowledge of the properties of the discharge plasma itself. The electron density and temperature influence the excitation as well as plasma chemistry reactions and the gas temperature plays a major role as a significant energy loss process limiting efficiency of excimer radiation. Most of the recent spectroscopic investigations are focusing on the ultraviolet or vacuum ultraviolet range for direct detection of the excimer. In our experiments we have concentrated on investigating the micro hollow cathodes from the near UV to the near infrared (300~850 nm) to measure the basic plasma parameters using standard plasma diagnostic techniques such as stark broadening for electron density and the relative line intensity method for electron temperature. Finally, the neutral gas temperature was measured by means of the vibrational rotational structures of the second positive system of nitrogen.

  • High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) treatment can significantly change the color of diamonds. We studied the variation of the optical properties according to the nitrogen arrangement in natural brown diamonds of various types (type IaAB, type IaB, type IaA > B, type IaA < B, IaA = B) after HPHT treatment. The diamonds with different arrangements of nitrogen were annealed at temperatures in the range $1700-1800^{\circ}C$ under a stabilizing pressure of 5 GPa. HPHT treated samples were analyzed using UV-Vis-NIR, FT-IR, and PL spectroscopy. The absorption and luminescence spectra were measured to compare the variations of nitrogen arrangement in the natural brown diamonds before and after HPHT treatment. After HPHT treatment, the brown coloration in all types of diamonds was reduced and a decrease in the peaks related to the A-aggregate of nitrogen was more predominant than the B-aggregate. Furthermore, the peaks related to N3 (415.4 nm), H4 (496.4 nm), and platelet decreased and the peaks related to H3 (503.2 nm) and G-band increased after HPHT treatment. In conclusion, spectroscopic analysis of natural brown diamonds after HPHT treatment showed that a yellow color was produced by absorption in the H3 centers and a green color was generated by interaction between absorptions of the H3 and H2 centers.

  • Protocatechualdehyde (PA) is phenolic compound having antioxidative and antitumor activities. PA was purified from supernatant of Streptomyces lincolnensis M-20. In the presence of copper ion, PA acted as pro-oxidant. The antioxidant activity was assessed with the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and the pro-oxidant effect of PA on DNA damage as pBR322 plasmid DNA-cleaving agents in the presence of Cu(II) ions was investigated. The involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the DNA damage was confirmed by the inhibition of the DNA breakage by using glutathione (GSH), specific scavenger of ROS. When the increase in ROS reaches a certain level (the toxic threshold), it may trigger cell death. The formation of the PA/Cu(II) chelate complex was confirmed by reaction with ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA), a well-known chelating agent for metal ions, by using UV/Vis spectroscopic analysis.

  • Several transition metal complexes, [$M(L)X_2$](M=Pd(II), Ni(II); X=CI, Br) are prepared with aminophosphine ligands such as 1,2-bis{(diphenylphosphino)amino}ethane{$Ph_2PNHCH_2CH_2NHPPh_2$}($L_1$), 1,2-bis{(diphenylphosphino)amino}propane{$Ph_2PNHCH(CH_3)CH_2NHPPh_2$}($L_2$), trans-1,2-bis{(diphenylphosphino)amino}cyclohexane{$Ph_2PNHC_6H_{10}NHPPh_2$}($L_3$) and 1,2-bis{(diphenylphosphino)amino}benzene{$Ph_2PNHC_6H_4NHPPh_2$}($L_4$). The properties of these complexes are characterized by optical spectroscopic methods including UV/vis spectroscopy, CD, IR, $^1H$- and $^{31}P-NMR$ together with conductometer and elemental analysis. All complexes are stable under atmospheric environment. Catalytic reactivity for C-C coupling between [$M(L)X_2$] and Grignard reagents(RMgX; R=phenyl, propyl, buthyl) by thermolysis were investigated utilizing GC/mass, $^1H$- and $^{13}C-NMR$. When mol scale is 1:20 at [$Pd(L)Cl_2$] and Grignard reagents, the high catalytic activity for C-C coupling is apparent. The [$M(L)X_2$](X=Cl, Br) complexes which have strong bond at M-P exhibit high yields for C-C coupling reactions. When the central metal ion is Pd(II), the high catalytic activity for C-C coupling is apparent. The complex coordinated with Br shows higher catalytic activity for C-C coupling reactions compared to Cl.

  • $TiO_2$ fine powders were synthesized via hydrolysis reaction of titanium isopropoxide in isopropanol solvent and the reaction rates were studied by use of UV spectroscopic method. The reactions were controlled to proceed to pseudo-first-order reaction in the presence of excess water in isopropanol solvent. The rate constants which varied with temperature and concentration of water were calculated by Guggenheim method. Reactions using $D_2O$ were also carried out to determine the catalytic character of water. n value of water molecules in transition state and the thermodynamic parameters showed that the reaction proceeded by $S_N2$ mechanism. $TiO_2$ powders synthesized in this reaction were almost spheric forms and had average particle size of $0.3{\mu}m$ diameter.

  • We have investigated the influence of the crystal structure on the chemical bonding nature and photocatalytic activity of cubic and hexagonal perovskite A[$Cr_{1/2}Ta_{1/2}$]O3 (A = Sr, Ba) compounds. According to neutron diffraction and field emission-scanning electron microscopy, the crystal structure and particle size of these compounds are strongly dependent on the nature of A-site cations. Also, it was found that the face-shared octahedra in the hexagonal phase are exclusively occupied by chromium ions, suggesting the presence of metallic (Cr-Cr) bonds. X-ray absorption and diffuse UV-vis spectroscopic analyses clearly demonstrated that, in comparison with cubic Sr[$Cr_{1/2}Ta_{1/2}$]$O_3$ phase, hexagonal Ba[$Cr_{1/2}Ta_{1/2}$]$O_3$ phase shows a decrease of Cr oxidation state as well as remarkable changes in interband Cr d-d transitions, which can be interpreted as a result of metallic (Cr-Cr) interactions. According to the test of photocatalytic activity, the present semiconducting materials have a distinct activity against the photodegradation of 4-chlorophenol. Also the Srbased compound was found to show a higher photocatalytic activity than the Ba-based one, which is attributable to its smaller particle size and its stronger absorption in visible light region.

  • Tetrathiafulvalene(TTF) reacts with $PdCl_2,Pd(NO_3)_2$ and $Pd(hfacac)_2$(hexafluoroacetylacetonate) in ethanol to give $(TTF)_{1.5}PdCl_2$ (1a), $(TTF)_3Pd(NO_3)_2$ (1b) and $(TTF)_4Pd(hfacas)_2$ nd (1c), respectively. $PdCl(TCNQ)_{2.5}{\cdot}CH_3OH(2a)$was obtained from the reaction of $PdCl_2$ with LiTCNQ in methanol via the partial replacement of $Cl^-$ in $PdCl_2$ by $TCNQ^-$anion, whereas the total substitution of the labile $NO_3^-$ in $Pd(NO_3)_2$ yielded pd(TCNQ)·$CH_3OH$ (2b). $Pd(hfacac)_2(TCNQ)_2\cdot3CH_3OH$ (2c) was obtained from $Pd(hfacac)_2$ and LiTCNQ in methanol. The prepared compounds were characterized by spectroscopic (IR, UV, XPS) methods and magnetic (EPR, magnetic susceptibility) studies. The powdered electrical conductivities (${\sigma}_{rt}$) of the prepared compounds at room temperature were about~$10^{-7}S{\cdot}cm^{-1}$. The effective magnetic moments were lass than the spin-only value of one unpaired electron and no EPR signals from Pd metal ions were observed in any of the compounds, indicating that the Pd ions were diamagnetic and the magnetic moments arose from$(TTF)_n$ or $(TCNQ)_n$ moieties. The experimental evidences revealed that the charge transfer had occurred form $(TTF)_n$ moiety to the central Pd metal ion in 1a, 1b and 1c. Thus the TTF donors were ions in 2a and 2b were diamagnetic Pd(II) oxidation state. In contrast, the Pd metal ion was oxidized to Pd(IV) state in 2c as a result of an addition of $TCNQ^-$anion to $Pd(hfacac)_2$ in methanol. The oxidation states of the Pd metal ions were confirmed using the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
