Electrochemical Behaviors of Copper-1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol Complex in Acetonitrile (아세토니트릴 용매 중에서 Copper-1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol 착물의 전기화학적 성질)

  • The electrochemical behaviors of copper-1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol(Cu-PAN) complex in acetonitrile (AN) solution have been investigated by the use of cyclic voltammetry, DC-polarography, controlled potential coulometry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Cu-PAN complex in acetonitrile exhibit three reduction waves at -1.27 V, -1.64 V and -2.08 V vs. Ag/AgNO$_3$(AN). The numbers of electron involved in each reduction step was calculated with controlled potential coulometry, and reduction product was identified with UV-Vis spectrum. As the result, we proposed the reduction mechanism of the Cu-PAN complex in acetonitrile.

  • Alkylbenzenes used as synthetic lubricant base oils have been analyzed to find the quantity of mono- and di-substituted alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon compositions and the number of carbon atoms in alkyl chains by $^{13}C$-NMR, near-infrared, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Also, linear long chain alkylated benzene in the engine lubricants was analyzed quantitatively by infrared spectroscopy.

  • Hydroxyapatite (HAP) was prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis method and also silver was introduced on the surface of HAP through an ion exchange reaction. The crystal phase and morphology of HAP were then evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the absorption property of HAP was characterized by diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy. The presence of silver nanoparticles on the surface of HAP was also verified by XRD and TEM analysis. Particularly, the silver doped HAP showed an enhanced absorption property in UV-Vis region compared to that of the pristine HAP.

Authentication of Hempseed Oil from Different Commercial Oils Using Simple UV-Vis Spectrophotomety (UV-Vis spectrophotometry법을 이용한 다양한 유지류로부터 헴프씨드 오일의 진위 판별법)

  • Hempseed, a dehulled Cannabis fructus, has high nutraceutical potential. It has plenty of essential amino acids, vitamins, and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, including α- and γ-linolenic acid. Increased exercise capacity, cognitive function, and ameliorative effects against hypercholesterolemia, neuro-inflammation, thrombus formation, and learning and memory impairment were reported in hemp-seed oil-administered models. Therefore, the market prices of hempseed oil are 45~140-fold higher than the other plant-derived oils, such as soy, corn, olive, canola, or linseed oil. In this study, instead of FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) or FTIR-Raman spectroscopy, a simple UV-Vis spectrophotometry method was developed to authenticate the hempseed oil. Measurements of absorbance at 245, 305, and 415 nm of oils and calculations of 245/415 and 315/415 nm provided that the ratios of 245/415 and 315/415 nm of authentic hempseed oils were 12.9 and 9.6, respectively. The 245/415 and 315/415 nm of soy oil, corn oil, canola oil, and linseed oil were 35.4~61.8 and 29.7~50.8, respectively. This simple UV-Vis spectrophotometry method could also be applied to differentiate hempseed oil from blended oil products in markets.

The Study on the Intercalation-Deintercalation of Potassium-Carbon Fiber Intercalation Compounds (칼륨-탄소섬유층간화합물의 Intercalation-Deintercalation에 관한 연구)

  • We have synthesized K-CFICs by the modified two-bulb method. These synthesized compound were analysed with X-ray diffractometer and UV/VIS spectrophotometer. According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the intercalation of potassium between the carbon layers of carbon fiber was better then other intercalants. From obtained data for this deintercalation process, we can see that a number of potassiums were presented as a residue between the carbon layers and this residue compounds had a stability for a long term. Therefore, it is appear that these compounds have a capability as new useful material. From UV/VIS spectrometry data, we can suppose that spectrum of K-CFICs synthesized at $250^{\circ}C$ had only a $R_{min}$, and spectra of any other compounds were not appeared charecteristic peaks because potassium ions were little affect the energy levels of original carbon fiber.

  • In this study, we investigated the performance of a portable colorimeter used for the measurements of atmospheric ammonia against the more reliable method like UV/VIS spectrophotometer. For the purpose of this study, we tested a portable colorimeter and UV/VIS spectrophotometer for such basic analytical parameters as detectibility, reproducibility, linearity, and accuracy. According to our study, the performance of the colorimeter was fairly good to show a good agreement with the UV/VIS system. However, the performance of colorimeter suffered from both low and high concentration ranges: it was found to have very poor reproducibility at lower concentration (below $10\mu}g$), while its linear dynamic range was limited at the upper end (e.g., near $100{\mu}g$). If we assume that air samples are collected up to 30 liter, it implies that the colorimeter can be used to measure samples containing NH3 in the range of 500 ppb to 5 ppm (without the aid of diluting technique). Consequently, we recommend the use of such instrument with the awareness of its basic properties pertaining to the fundamental performance (such as its detectable range).

Investigation of Oxidation Methods of Organic Radical Polymer for Cathode Material in Lithium Ion Batteries (리튬이차전지 양극재인 유기라디칼 고분자의 산화법에 대한 연구)

  • An organic radical polymer (ORP) was prepared by radical polymerization and following oxidation into nitroxyl radical. Two different oxidation methods were employed and their radical concentrations were measured using electroparamagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and UV-visible absorption (UV-vis) spectroscopy. From these measurements, $H_2O_2-Na_2WO_4$ oxidation method exhibited a complete oxidation, which resulted in 97.6% spin concentration. Also, it was revealed that convenient and cheap UV-vis measurement was useful for preliminary radical concentration comparison. After applied as a cathode material in lithium ion batteries, ORP electrode showed a high initial capacity ($110mAh\;g^{-1}$), a good initial efficiency (96%), a very high rate performance (70% charging during 1.2 min) and stable cycle performance.

  • Indium tin oxide(ITO) films coated on the window glass selectively transmit the solar energy and infrared. We call this system passive solar collectors. Selectively absorbing properties of sol gel dip coated ITO films were characterized by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. The effects of heat treating temperature, time, atmosphere, substrate and barrier layers are concerned. Indium tin oxide films heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ in a reducing atmosphere show intrinsic properties. Efficiency of solar energy transmittance was enhanced by coating of $SiO_2-ZrO_2$ as an alkali ion barrier layer. Energy was saved by the double layers of $SiO_2-ZrO_2$ and ITO since solar energy is transmitted and heat generated inside(${\lambda}$ > 2700nm) is reflected.

  • Lithium-Carbon Intercalation Compounds(Li-CICs) have been synthesized from various carbon ma-terials by use of the modified stainless steel two-bulbs methods. These compounds had various colours by structural character of starting materials. The synthesized Li-CICs were identified to stage formation process by X-ray diffraction data. At these results, well-oriented natural graphite and graphite fiber are formed lower stages(Stage 1, Stage 2), but poor-oriented carbon fiber and petroleum cokes are also formed higher stages(Stage 3, Stage 4, Stage 5). And when we compared with measured d value and calculated d value, these values agreed with each other. But poor-oriented carbon materials are some difference from them. The stage stability and energy stage of Li-CICs were obtained by UV/VIS Spectrophotometric data. X-ray diffraction and UV/VIS Spectrophotometric data suggested that well-oriented carbon materials has distingushible curve between energy and reflectance. In these results, we know that many charge carriers between carbon layers are related to concentration of intercalants. And then, this paper also provides information on high efficiency energy storing materials at intercalation process of Li-CICs.

Solubilization of Cresol Isomers by the Cationic Surfactant of TTTAB in Aqueous Solution of n-Butanol and NaCl (n-부탄올 및 NaCl 수용액에서 양이온 계면활성제인 TTAB에 의한 크레졸 이성질체들의 가용화에 대한 연구)

  • We tried to investigate the effects of substituent position, temperature, and additives such as NaCl and n-butanol on the solubilizations of cresol isomers by tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), using the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The measured solubilization constants (Ks) values for each cresol isomer increased in the order o-cresolo and ∆Ho values for the solubilizations of cresols were all negative values but the ∆So values were all positive values within the measured ranges. The values of ∆Go increased also with increasing the concentration of n-butanol but decreased with increasing the concentration of NaCl. From these facts, we could conclude that both the enthalpy and entropy changes contribute together for the solubilizations of cresols isomers by cationic surfactant of TTAB and they are solubilized in the polar palisade region or at the surface of micelle.
