This study examined the pretreatment effect, appropriate dyeing conditions, color fastness and functionality of cotton fabrics dyed with Zizania latifolia Turcz. Dye uptake was substantially increased by pretreatment and chitosan pretreatment was much more effective than tannic acid pretreatment. Optimal dyeing conditions were colorant concentration of 100%, dyeing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, dyeing time of 80 minutes and dyebath pH of 5.5. Color fastness of chitosan pretreatment and dyed cotton to washing, rubbing, perspiration and light was 4, 5, 3-4(acidic), 3(alkaline) and 3 respectively. Color fastness of tannic acid pretreatment and dyed cotton to washing, rubbing, perspiration and light was 4, 5, 3-4(acidic), 4-5(alkaline) and 4 respectively. Deodorization rates of ammonia(NH3) were 99.9% in both cases. UV protection rate were 98.3% of UV-A and 98.5% of UV-B in case of chitosan pretreatment. UV protection rate were 98.2% of UV-A and 98.5% of UV-B in case of tannic acid pretreatment. UV protection factor(UPF) was 50+ in both cases. Reduction rate of Staphyloccus aureus were 99.9% in both cases. Therefore Zizania latifolia Turcz. could be used a new functional colorant.
Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) influences the development of hygienic and health-oriented functional textile products; consequently, there has been an increase in the prospects for environmentally friendly natural dyeing products with functional and sensitive characteristics. Therefore, the present study expresses a functional manifestation on fabrics by treatment with chitosan and tannin using natural Coptidis Rhizoma. Cotton and wool fabrics dyed with Coptidis Rhizoma after treatment with chitosan and tannin. Consequently, the antibiosis of fabric dyed with Coptidis Rhizoma was excellent with 99.9% bacterial reduction for Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae in both fabrics. The deodorization rate was more than 90.0% in both fabrics after 120 minutes. The UV-A protection rate was 88.2% and the UV-B protection rate was 87.7% for cotton. The UV-A protection rate was 88.2% and the UV-B protection rate was 84.3% for wool fabric. Therefore, both of the dyed fabrics showed excellent UV protection by treatment with only chitosan and tannin, without mordants. Therefore, chitosan and tannin treatments were able to manifest functionalities in the fabrics dyed with Coptidis Rhizoma.
This study was aimed to find whether the Chelidonium majus which grows naturally in Korean soil and has a various medical ingredient is valuable as a natural dyeing material and to examine the functionality of Chelidonium majus extract. The colorfastness to laundry for discoloration showed from 1st to 4th grade and that for discoloration showed from 4th to 5th grade through all the dyed fabrics. Colorfastness to perspiration, rubbing, and drycleaning showed from 4th to 5th grade through all the dyed fabrics. In the result of antibiosis test, the dyed cotton fabric showed the bacteria reduction rate of 99.0% for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli evenly when washed one, three, and five times, The dyed silk fabric, when washed one, three, and five times, showed the bacteria reduction rate of 99.0% for Staphylococcus aureus, but didn't showed the significant bacteria reduction. As the test result of sun protection test, in the case of the cotton fabric which was dyed but don't use mordant, after one-time washing, S.P.F.(Sun Protection Factor) showed 20.4, the interception rate of UV-A showed 94.3%, and that of UV-B showed 95.2%. After five-time washing, S.P.F. showed 14.3, the interception rate of UV-A showed 90.0%, and that of UV-B showed 93.2%. In the case of the silk fabric which was dyed but don't use mordant, after one time washing, S.P.F. showed 30.5, the interception rate of UV-A showed 95.9%, and that of UV-B showed 96.9%, after five-time washing, S.P.F. showed 31.0, the interception rate of UV-A showed 95.6%, and that of UV-B showed 96.7%.
Recently there has been interested in the use of natural dyes in textile applications. Generally natural dyes can exhibit better biodegradability and have a higher compatibility with the environment. In this study, cotton, wool and silk fabrics were dyed with alkali extract of Arecae semen using various mordants, and their dyeabilities were discussed. Additionally the fastness to washing, perspiration, light, rubbing, and drycleaning and UV-B protection rate were also investigated. Cotton, silk and wool fabrics dyed with alkali extract of Arecae semen were colored in reddish yellow tint. The optimum dyeing condition of the colorants extracted from the Alecae semen was three repeated dyeing at $95^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hrs. The dyed fabrics by using mordanting methods improved the fastness to washing, perspiration and drycleaning, but the fastness to light and rubbing were not increased. The UV-B protection rate of the wool fabrics were increased by dyeing with extract of Arecae semen.
This study examined the dyeability, color fastness and functionality of cotton fabrics dyed with residual parts of cultivated Pteridium aquilinum. UV-Vis absorption spectrum, TLC and FT-IR spectra analysis showed that colorants of Pteridium aquilinum are a mixture of pyrogallol tannin and catechol tannin. Optimum dyeing conditions was confirmed colorant concentration of 500% at $100^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes. Color fastness followed to washing, rubbing, perspiration and light as 4-5, 5, 4-5(acidic), 3-4(alkaline) and 2, respectively. Deodorization rates of ammonia($NH_3$) and acetic acid ($CH_3COOH$) were analyzed 88.8% and 78.0%. UV protection rate was 94.2% of UV-A and 96.8% of UV-B. UV protection factor(UPF) was 27. Therefore residual parts of cultivated Pteridium aquilinum could be used for a new functional colorant.
Recently there has been a growing interest in the use of natural dyes in textile applications. Natural dyes can exhibit better biodegradability and generally have a higher compatibility with the environment. In this study, the colorants of Catalpa ovata bark were extracted with water and analyzed by spectrophotometry for their main colorant species. Cotton, silk and wool fabrics have been dyed with aqueous extract of Catalpa ovata bark and their dyeabilities on the fibers were studied. Additionally the fastness to washing, drycleaning and light, and the effects on bacteriostatic rate and UV-B protection rate were also investigated. The major colorant of the extract of Catalpa ovata bark was shown to be 6-O-trans-caffeoyl-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside. Cotton, silk and wool fabrics dyed with the extract of Catnip ovata bark were colored in yellowish red tint. The optimum dyeing condition of the colorants extracted from Catalp ovata bark was three repeated dyeing at $95^\circ{C}$ for 1 hr using post mordanting. For dyed silk and wool fabric, the fastness to washing were improved by mordanting, and the fastness to drycleaning were very outstanding. In case of wool fabric dyed with the extract of Catalpa ovata bark, the bacteriostatic rate was increased drastically by 98.0%, and UV-B protection rate was increased by 97.3%.

I reviewed about dyeing fastness and functional properties of the non-mordant dyed cotton and iron mordant dyed cotton with astringent persimmon juice. In the UV-VIS spectrum of astringent persimmon juice, the maximum absorption wavelength of the juice was 272.0 nm, which was a characteristic peak of tannin. In dyeing fastness, light fastness of the non-mordant dyed cotton was a little low at grade 2~3. But by the iron mordant treatment, the light fastness was good at grade 4. Dry cleaning fastness to discoloration and contamination was excellent at grade 4~5 for both the non-mordant dyed cotton and iron-mordant dyed cotton. Their rub fastness were grade 3 and grade 2~3 respectively, in the dry condition, and grade 2~3 and grade 3 respectively, in the wet condition. In the perspiration fastness of the non-mordant dyed cotton, the discoloration from acidity and alkalinity was grade 3~4 and grade 3, respectively, and contamination from acidity and alkalinity was relatively good at grade 4. Meanwhile, in the perspiration fastness of the non-mordant dyed cotton, discoloration from acidity and alkalinity was fair, both recording grade 3~4, and contamination from acidity and alkalinity was very good, both recording grade 4~5. In the ultraviolet protection effect of the non-mordant dyed cotton and iron-mordant dyed cotton, the ultraviolet protection factor was both 50+, both of which showed an excellent ultraviolet blocking effect. And the protection rate of UV-A appeared 98.4% and 99.1%, respectively, and the protection rate of UV-B showed 98.7% and 99.2, respectively. In addition, both exhibited an excellent deodorization rate over 99.9% or more, irrespective of the passage of time. Also, both showed an excellent antimicrobial activity over 99.9% or more against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
This study examined the proper dyeing conditions, color fastness and functionality for wool fabrics dyed with Chamaecyparis obtusa leaf extract. FT-IR and UV-Vis spectrum analysis showed that tannin and flavonoids were contained in the extracted colorant. The dyeing of wool fabrics using Chamaecyparis obtusa leaf was good without pretreatment or mordant treatment. Optimal dyeing conditions for wool fabrics were a colorant concentration of 70%(v/v), dyeing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, dyeing time of 100 minutes and dyebath pH of 5.8. Color fastness of dyed wool fabrics to washing, rubbing, perspiration was good, whereas light was grade 3. The UV protection rate and deodorization rate of wool fabrics dyed with Chamaecyparis obtusa leaf improved. Reduction rate of Staphylococcus aureus/Klebsiella pneumoniae were excellent at 99.9%. Therefore, it was confirmed that Chamaecyparis obtusa leaf can be used as environ-mentally friendly natural dye.
UV radiation is the most dangerous stress factor among permanent environmental impacts on human skin. Consequences of UV exposure are aberrant tissue architecture, alterations in skin cells including functional changes. Nowadays new kinds of outdoor leisure-time activities and changing environmental conditions make the question of sun protection more important than ever. It is necessary to recognize that self-confident consumers do not consider to change their way of life, they demand modern solutions on the basis of new scientific developments. In the past one fundamental principle of cosmetics was the use of physical and organic filter systems against damaging UV-rays. Today new research results demonstrate that natural protecting cell mechanisms can be activated. Suitable biological actives strongly support the protection function not from the surface but from the inside of the cell. A soy seed preparation (SSP) was proven to stimulate natural skin protective functions. The major functions are an increased energy level and the prevention of DNA damage. These functions can I be defined as biological UV protection. The tumor suppressor protein p53 plays a key role in the regulation of DNA repair. p53 must be transferred into the phosphorylated form to work as transcription factor for genes which are regulating the cell cycle or organizing DNA repair. A pretreatment with SSP increases the phosphorylation rate of p53 of chronically UV-irradiated human keratinocytes significantly. According to the same test procedure SSP induces a dramatic increase in the expression of the tumor suppressor protein p14$^{ARF}$ that is supporting the p53 activity by blocking the antagonist of p53, the oncoprotein Mdm2. Mdm2, a ubiquitin E3-ligase, downregulates p53 and at the same time it prevents phosphorylation of p53. The positive influence of the tumor suppressor proteins explains the stimulation of DNA repair and prevention of sunburn cell formation by SSP, which was proven in cell culture experiments. In vivo the increased skin tolerance against UV irradiation by SSP could be confirmed too. We have assumed, that an increased repair potential provides full cell functionality.y.
This study was conducted to examine the effects of egg shell membrane hydrolysates (ESMH) on skin whitening, wound healing, and UV-protection. ESMH was divided into three groups by molecular weight (Fraction I: above 10 kDa of ESMH, Fraction II: 3 kDa-10 kDa of ESMH, Fraction III: below 3 kDa of ESMH). As a result, all of ESMHs showed over 90% of protein contents. The wound healing experiment using HaCaT cells showed that the fraction I was slightly superior to other fractions depending on the concentration though it was not significantly different. In the experiments of inhibition of tyrosinase and L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) oxidation to verify the L-DOPA whitening effect, the whole ESMH (before fractioning) showed a similar amount of inhibition effect with arbutin (control). In the inhibition of melanin formation in B16-F1 melanoma cells, the fraction I showed a high inhibitory effect. In the experiment for protecting the skin from ultraviolet rays using HaCaT cells, all the fractions showed a higher rate of cell viability than the control. In conclusion, this study confirmed that the cosmetic effects of ESMHs such as skin whitening, wound healing, and UV-protection, which were divided depending on the molecule weight. We could confirm that the possibility of ESMHs as a material for functional cosmetics.
