Serious issues about the changes in the environmental conditions on earth associated with human activities have arisen, and the interest in these problems has increased. It is urgent to determine how the expansion of terrestrial UV-B radiation due to the stratospheric ozone depletion influences living matters. In this connection, we have been investigating the effects of UV-B radiation on the growth of rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.). We report here some physiological and genetic aspects of resistance to inhibitory effects of UV-B radiation on growth of rice cultivars as described below. Elevated UV radiation containing large amount of UV-B and a small amount of UV-C inhibited the development of plant height, the photosynthetic rate and the chlorophyll content in rice plants in a phytotron. Similar results were obtained in experiments, in which elevated UV-V radiation. Similar results were obtained in experiments, in which elevated UV-B radiation (transmission down to 290 nm) was applied instead of UV-B radiation containing a small amount of UV-C. The inhibitory effects of UV radiation was alleviated by the elevated CO2 atmospheric environment or by the exposure to the high irradiance visible radiation. The latter suggested the possibility that the resistance to the effects of UV radiation was either due to a lower sensitivity to UV radiation or to a greater ability to recover from the injury caused by UV radiation through the exposure to visible radiation. The examination of cultivar differences in the resistance to UV radiation-caused injuries among 198 rice cultivars belonging to 5 Asian rice ecotypes (aus, aman, boro, bulu and tjeleh) from the Bengal region and Indonesia and to Japanese lowland and upland rice groups showed the following: Various cultivars having different sensitivities to the effects of UV radiation were involved in the same ecotype and the same group, and that the Japanese lowland rice group and the boro ecotype were more resistant. Among Japanese lowland rice cultivars, Sasanishiki (one of the leading varieties in Japan) exhibited more resistance to UV rakiation, while Norin 1 showed less resistance, although these two cultivars are closely related. It was thus indicated that the resistance to the inhibitory effects of UV radiation of rice cultivars is not simply due to the difference in the geographical situation where rice cultuvars are cultivated. Form the genetic analysis of resistance to the inhibitory effects of UV radiation on growth of rice using F2 plants generated by reciprocally crossing Sasanishiki and Norin 1 and F3 lines generated by self-fertilizing F2 plants, it was evident that the resistance to the inhibitory of elebated UV radiation in these rice plants was controlled by recessive polygenes.
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is associated with the development of adverse effects in skin. Among the three types of UV rays, UV-B causes the most damaging effects, inducing sunburn and penetrating the outer skin, resulting in DNA mutations and skin cancer. The objective of this study was to formulate a UV-protective film by incorporating Ecklonia cava extracts. Cells covered with the film were exposed to UV-B (50, 80, and $100mJ/cm^2$). To determine the protective effects of the film, we evaluated cell viability, intracellular ROS generation, and apoptosis. We found that all E. cava extracts absorbed UV light and exhibited protective effects against UV-B-induced photodamage. Among the protective films examined in this study, that incorporating an E. cava 70% ethanol extract (70EX) formed the most effective protection against UV-B in HaCaT cells. These findings suggest that the application of film containing E. cava extract could prevent UV-B-induced photodamage, and offer protection against the detrimental effects of UV radiation, thus maintaining physiological condition.
Elevated near-UV radiation, containing a large amount of UV-B and a small amount of UV-C, inhibited the development of leaves and tillers, the increase in biomass production, the elongation of plant height, the photosynthetic rate and the chlorophyll content in rice plants in a phytotron. Elevated UV-B radiation filtered through cellulose diacetate film or UV-31 cut filter (transmission down to 290 nm) similarly suppressed each growth component above. Near-UV radiation-caused injuries were alleviated either by elevated CO$_2$ atmosphere or by exposure to high irradiance-visible radiation. On the basis of these findings, we examined cultivar differences in the resistance to UV radiation-caused injuries among 198 rice cultivars belonging to 5 Asian rice ecotypes ( aus, aman, boro, bulu and tjeleh) from the Bengal region and Indonesia and to Japanese lowland and upland rice groups. It was shown that .various cultivars having different sensitivities to the effects of near-UV radiation were involved in the same ecotype and the same group, and that the Japanese lowland rice group and the boro ecotype were more resistant. Among Japanese lowland rice cultivars, Sasanishiki (one of the leading varieties in Japan) exhibited more resistance to near-UV radiation, while Norin 1 showed less resistance, although these two cultivars are closely related. It was thus indicated that the resistance to the inhibitory effects of near-UV radiation of rice cultivars is not simply due to the difference in the geographical situation where rice cultivars are cultivated. From the genetic analysis of resistance to the inhibitory effects of UV radiation on growth of rice using F$_2$ plants generated by reciprocally crossing Sasanishiki and Norin 1 and F$_3$ lines generated by self-fertilizing F$_2$ plants, it was evident that the resistance to the inhibitory effects of elevated near-UV radiation in these rice plants was controlled by recessive polygenes.
It is well hewn that ultraviolet light(UV) penetrates into the skin depends on the wavelength and causes many biochemical reactions in the skin. The enormous amount of information reveals that UV effects sun-burn, sun-tan and photoaging etc. In addition to these, it is now recognized that UV initiates immuno-suppression, and associated with this, skin cancer. In this review, I tried to illuminate the processes of injurious effects of UV on the skin.
The effects of various intensity of W-B on barley seeding were investigated by PS I and II activities and chlorophyll fluorescence. The Inhibitory effect of UV-B radiation on electron transport activity was Increased as the intensity of UV-B Irradiation was increased. Especially, PS I is more sensitive to UV-B radiation than PS I is. By the addition of uncle electron donor, DPC, to the chloroplasts of the barley seedlings treated with UV-B, the photoreduction of DCPIP was recovered by only 1 IBI on electron transport activity. However, the activity of PS II was Inhibited by 45% by the treatment with UV-B, but recovered it only 11% by the addition of DPC. These suggest that other sites besides the oxidation site of PS II may be affected more by UV-B Irradiation. As the intensify of UV-B was Increased, Fo was Increased while Fv was decreased, and thus Fv/Fm was decreased. This means that photochemical efficiency was reduced. With this parameters, it might be that UV-B radiation affected adversely to around PS II.
In the present study we studied the growth, photosynthetic traits and protective mechanisms against oxidative stress in the primary loaves of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings with or without UV-B treatment. Cucumber seedings were irradiated with UV-B for 10 days in environment-controlled growth chambers. The primary leaves irradiated with UV-B showed reduction in leaf length and decreased biomass production. The reduced biomass production seemed to be due to a negative effect of UV-B radiation on the photosynthetic process. Changes in chemical properties of leaf, such as chi a/b ratio affected photosynthesis. UV-B significantly affected chl b content compared with chi a in the light harvesting complex resulting reduced photosynthetic activity Fv/Fm decreased with an UV-B stress, suggesting that the photosynthetic apparatus, and particularly, PS II was damaged under UV-B stress. Malondialdehyde(MDA) concentration which represents the state of membrane lipid peroxidation Increased significantly under UV-B stress confirming an oxidative stress. UV-B exposure with SA solution(0.1-1.0 mM) can partially ameliorated some of the detrimental effects of UV-B stress. Leaf injuries including loss of chlorophyll and decreased ratio of Fv/Fm were reduced with combined application of UV-B and SA. ABA and JA showed similar mode of action in physiological effects on photosynthetic activities though the levels were lower than those from SA treated plants. Chloroplast ultrastructure was also affected by UV-B exposure. The thickness of leaf tissue components decreased and the number of grana and thylakoids was reduced in chloroplast applied UV-B or SA alone. At combined stress granal and stromal thylakoids were less affected. The leaves under combined stress acquired a significant tolerance to oxidative stress. From these results, it can be suggested that SA may have involved a protective role against UV-B induced oxidative damage.
For the purpose of improving the UV sterilization for toothbrush, the sterilizing effects by the UV light were studied. When toothbrushes were treated with the UV light for 5, 15, 30, 60 minutes, the sufficient antibacterial effect were shown after 15 minutes with 80% of bactericidal effects. To prevent the brownish stain on the sterilizer which was caused by the long exposure of UV light, no UV treatment for two hours after 15 minutes exposure were scheduled and then 3 minutes re-exposure were performed, which showed 97% of bactericidal effect. Also, the antibacterial effects of the sterilizer showed different results depending on the position of the toothbrush, it was recommended to adjust toothbrush to be exposed by the UV light directly.
The depletion of stratospheric ozone is regarded as a major environmental threat to plant growth and ecosystem. The ozone depletion has caused plants to be exposed to an increased penetration of solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation in the 280-320 nm wavelength range. Enhanced UV-B radiation may have influence on plants biological functions in many aspects including inhibition of photosynthesis, DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, changes in morphology, phenology, and biomass accumulation. To cope with the damage by UV radiation, plants have evolved to have protective mechanisms, such as photorepair, accumulation of UV-absorbing compounds, leaf thickening and activation of antioxidative enzymes. The objective of this review is to address the effects of enhanced UV-B on plant growth, UV-B action mechanisms and protection and protection mechanisms in plants.
As the concerns over health increased in 1990's, research and development on the health material were also activated. The development of UV-cut textile became the hot issue, because the damage of W irradiation due to ozone depletion has become widely known. UV-cut effect is determined by the material, the color, the organization and the density of UV-cut fibers. UV-cut effect is very different according to the fibers. Polyester is known to have a better effect. Even in the same textile material, staple fiber has more effect than filament fiber. Different colors have different offsets. Although textiles have the same color, the effects can be different according to the depth of color. PET, PET/cotton blend, nylon and cotton fabrics were ultraviolet cutting finished with padding method using several absorbers. These UV-cut effect can be improved through the processing. Safety of UV-cut textile for the body must be considered future, Until now the figure of the UV-cut effects has been emphasized. There has been no experiment on the human body, although the textiles are directly on the human body. Futhermore there os no safety standard of UV-cut textiles. Therefore every effort will be made to set the standard UV-cut processing is established. The need of UV-cut products will be known to the consumers.

The purpose of this study was to develop functional and environment-friendly polyester fabric by irradiating Ultra-Violet, which was produced by the low-pressure mercury lamp. UV irradiation was conducted with various treatment times and distances. Also, pretreatments of solvents and photoinitiator were used to improve the surface modification effects. The effects of UV irradiation on the moisture regain were found to increase gradually with increase of UV treatment time and decrease of treatment distance. Compared the effects of UVC and UVA, UVC was more effective than UVA. Moisture regain and wicking of PET was increased after UV treatment in our experimental condition. And owing to increasing of moisture regain, static charge was decreased. Pretreatment of solvents such as methanol, ethyl ether and addition of photoinitiator such as Benzophenone accelerated surface modification. The moisture regain was increased but wicking was decreased with pretreatment and addition of photoinitiatior. Therefore it is considered as inappropriate f3r clothing because of wicking effects. Yellowness, tensile strength and elasticity slightly decreased after UV irradiation.
