  • In this study, the acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) for the optical functionality sheet was prepared by blending liquid isoprene rubber. The acrylic PSA was synthesized with butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Toluene was used to a solvent for polymerization. Liquid isoprene rubber (LIR-50) was blended with the acrylic PSA and blend ratio was 0 ~ 50 wt%. According to the results, the adhesive transfer, which was the big problem of acrylic adhesive, was reduced with the addition of LIR-50. The secondary bonding of LIR-50 with substrate did not occurred due to absence of polar group in LIR-50. The peel strength and adhesive transfer were decreased by UV curing and the degreed of decrease depended on the amounts of photoinitiator and UV irradiation time. On the other hand holding power increased drastically by increasing amounts of photoinitiator and UV irradiation time.

  • Future electronics such as electronic paper and foldable cellphone are required to be flexible and transparent and should have a high performance. In order to fabricate the flexible electronics using flexibility transfer process, techniques for transferring various devices from rigid substrate onto flexible substrate by elastomeric stamp, have been developed. Adhesion between the elastomeric stamp and various devices is crucial for successful transfer process. The adhesion can be controlled by the thickness of the stamp, separation velocity, contact load, and stamp surface treatment. In this study, we fabricated the bump shape stamp consisting of a UV-curable polymer and investigated the effects of curing condition, separation velocity, and contact load on the adhesion characteristics of bumps. The bumps with hemispherical shape were fabricated using a dispensing process, which is one of the ink-jet printing techniques. Curing conditions of the bumps were controlled by the amount of UV irradiation energy. The adhesion characteristics of bumps are evaluated by adhesion test. The results show that the pull-off forces of bumps were increased and decreased as UV irradiation energy increased. For UV irradiation energies of 300 and 500 mJ/cm2, the pull-off forces were increased as the separation velocity increased. The pull-off forces also increased with the increase of contact load. In the case of UV irradiation energy above 600 mJ/cm2, however, the pull-off forces were not changed. Therefore, we believe that the bump shape stamp can be applied to roll-based transfer process and selective transfer process as an elastomeric stamp.

  • Ultraviolet curable coatings are often used to protect the surface of polymer materials exposed to the ultraviolet radiation. However, the adhesion of epoxy acrylate on poly(vinyl chloride) and the UV curable coating on polystyren are poor. The objective of this work was to improve the adhesion of coating according to various formulations of the reactive diluents and finishing methods using the photografting of multifunctional acrylate and the surface activation on polymer surface impregnated a phtoinitiator. The addition of Tripropylene glycole diacrlate in the formulation of coating results in the improvement of adhesion of coating due to the flexibility. But the increase of the crosslinking density which results from the oxidation of surface during the exposure of UV radiation caused the loss of adhesion of coating exept the photografting method. In the trimethylolpropane triacrylate the improvement of adhesion are considerable due to the chemical bond between multifundtional acrylate and surface. From this work we expect to achieve the varity and functionality in the formulation of coating according to the photografting and surface activating of polymer.

  • Using various compositions of thermally conductive inorganic fillers with boron nitride (BN) and aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$), solventless UV-curable thermally conductive acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were prepared. The base of the PSAs consists of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, and isobornyl acrylate. The compositions of the thermally conductive inorganic fillers were 10, 15, 20, and 25 phr in case of BN, and 20:0, 15:5, 10:10, 5:15, and 0:20 phr in case of $BN/Al_2O_3$. The adhesion properties like peel strength, shear strength, and probe tack, and the thermal conductivity of the prepared PSAs were investigated with different thermally conductive inorganic filler contents. There were no significant changes in photo-polymerization behavior with increasing BN or $BN/Al_2O_3$ content. Meanwhile, the conversion rate and transmittance of the PSAs decreased and their thermal stabilities increased with increasing BN content. Their adhesion properties were also independent of the BN or $BN/Al_2O_3$ content. The dispersibility of BN in the acrylic PSAs was better than that of $Al_2O_3$ and it ranked the thermal conductivity in the following order: BN > $BN/Al_2O_3$ > $Al_2O_3$.

  • Hydroxypropyl terminated PDMS was synthesized by the hydrosilylation reaction with allyl alcohol in the presence of Karstedt's catalyst. And them, an one-pot reaction with HDI isocyanurate trimer and hydroxyethyl methacrylate was conducted to give a silicone-modified urethane acrylate oligomer (PUA oligomer) having 9000 g/mol, weight average molecular weight. The synthesized PUA oligomer was characterized by using FT-IR and GPC. The UV-curable coatings were prepared by PUA oligomer blending with a reactive monomer (phenylthioethyl acrylate) under the different mole ratios. It was found that the refractive index of cured film increased when the reactive monomer was added but there was no relationship between the refractive index and amount of reactive monomer. Also, their transmittance for cured films was not change as increasing the content of reactive monomer.

  • Surface properties and curing behavior of UV-initiated photopolymerization with and without wax have been investigated by pendulum hardness, pencil hardness, gloss, photo-differential scanning calorimetry (photo-DSC) and SEM. In addition, the influence of wax type (paraffin wax, PE wax) on the various properties of UV cured films was studied. The results showed that the wax type was the significant factor affecting gloss and surface hardness of UV cured films. Specially, the photo-DSC results showed that ${\Delta}H$ for the UV cured films containing paraffin wax was higher than the corresponding values for the formulation without wax and with PE wax. The observed results clearly demonstrate that the photopolymerization of UV curing with paraffin wax in an air atmosphere is less inhibited by the oxygen compared to UV curing without wax and with PE wax.

  • We demonstrate an optically compensated bend (OCB) cell with pixel-isolating polymer wall. The polymer wall is formed by anisotropic phase separation of LCs and UV-curable polymer. The fabricated cell is initially in ${\pi}-twisted$ state so that it shows uniform and fast bend transition without any transition nucleus. The proposed cell has lower driving voltage than conventional OCB cell. Also, the polymer wall provides mechanical stability, hence preventing distortion of display image from external pressure.

  • Ultra violet (UV) curable pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) were prepared by controlling both the structure of acryl copolymer and the functionality and content of multi-functional monomers. Acryl copolymer worked as the base polymer for giving the tackiness. Multi-functional monomers were used to vary the crosslinked structure and the degree of crosslink. Acryl copolymer showed the reduced peel strength after UV curing by decreasing the content of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate in the monomer composition. Both the peel strength of PSA and the content of residue found on silicon wafer decreased after UV curing by increasing the functionality of multi-functional monomers. UV curable PSA containing 20 phr six-functional monomer showed the higher peel strength before UV curing and the lower peel strength and the least residue on silicon wafer after UV curing.

  • OCB mode has advantages such as fast response time and wide viewing angle. But it has inevitable shortcoming which initial splay state must be changed to bend state. To overcoming this problem, OCB cell filled LC with RM monomer was cured by UV when voltage applied. Through previously mentioned methods, even if electric field is none, bend state was made by stabilized LC director. In this paper, we investigated the electric characteristics of polymer stabilized OCB mode.
