  • We have measured the spectral transmittances of UV blocking soft contact lenses, regular soft contact lenses and regular RGP lenses using the method suggested in ANSI Z80.20 standard. In order to evaluate visible light transmitting and UV blocking characteristics, we have calculated transmittances by integrating over the specific spectral ranges, i.e., visible light, UVA, UVB and UVC. We found that mean transmittances of visible light for all three categories were over 90.0 % which could be considered as within acceptable range for a contact lens. The transmittance of the UVA and UVB radiation for the UV blocking soft lenses except some cases was within UVR (Ultraviolet radiation) transmittance standard. The UV blocking ability of regular soft and RGP lenses was poor as rather expected. These results will be expected to assist clinical opticians and practitioners in utilizing the transmittance characteristics about the contact lens.

  • This paper aimed at the development of face covers which is face protection articles for blocking UV rays and yellow sands, with a view to assist the further activation of outdoor life. The four-stage design process of field study, design, design evaluation, final selection of designs was set up for the effective product development. Field study included on-line and off-line market survey on the products for sale in market and observation on those wearing face covers. Depth interviews were done to know consumer understandings and satisfaction levels for current face covers. The results of market survey showed that most of the face covers currently in the market were mask types, which were produced for the blocking of dust and yellow sands rather than UV ray protection. The major clients of the mask were the women in their 30's-50's and the designs for these clients were very limited. Since the number of younger women and men enjoy the outdoor sports has increased, the face covers for these people should be developed. For this purpose, the direction of new face cover design had 2 points: diversification of design in terms of color, material, shape and giving seasonal differences. 12 designs were designed on the first design stage, but after both wearing test by 16 testees and UV ray blocking test to evaluate these designs, 6 face cover designs were finally selected.

  • In recent years, titanium dioxide powders were produced as nanoparticles or nanowires or nanotubes in one-dimensional structure, and mesoporous spheres in 3-D to improve their crystallinities, which were further used as photo-electrode materials and for preventing photo-aging. In this study, a nano sol composed of titanium dioxide exhibiting a high crystallinity was synthesized using n-alcohol as a solvent. The crystallinity of the nano sol was confirmed by FE-SEM, and XRD, while the UV blocking rate confirmed by UV-Vis spectrometry results. Changes in the crystallinity were investigated by varying the types of solvents such as butanol, propanol and ethanol. The synthesized particle sizes were from 200 to 250 nm, and the optical transmittance showed a high blocking rate in the UVB and UVA range. It is expected that a high transmittance at 550 nm wavelength can increase the photoelectric conversion efficiency of solar cells and the UV blocking efficiency.

  • This study was done for the preparation of macromolecular material with UV-blocking features by adding the benzophenone group that is commonly used as a UV-absorbent and $TiO_2$ which is known to be a very stable material in chemical and physical aspects. Also, we compared the level of UV absorbency of the polymer produced from polymerization with previous materials and measured basic properties such as water content, refractive index and optical transmittance of produced contact lenses. The results of the measurement showed that the refractive index and water content of the contact lens with added UV-absorbent was 1.430~1.440 and 35.0~45.0% respectively, which was similar to that of previous contact lenses. Also, for optical transmittances of each wave length, contact lenses without the UV-absorbent was 89%, 88% and 89% respectively for UV-A, UV-B and visible light, indicating that the UV transmittance is very high though contrary with cases of contact lenses with added 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzophenone and 2,4-dihydroxy-benzophenone which showed transmittances of 0% and 6% respectively for UV-A and UV-B showing a UV-blocking effect. Meanwhile, contact lenses with added $TiO_2$ showed transmittance of 6% and 51% respectively for UV-A and UV-B also showing a UV-blocking effect. The visible transmittance was 77~89% showing that it satisfies the visible transmittance required for ophthalmological materials.

  • A new route to phthalocyanine complexes were developed to synthesize these products by fusion in the absence of solvent. This new method of synthesis without using solvent has advantages over the conventional synthetic methods since there are no risk of explosion and formation of harmful vapor from organic solvent. Reaction of PcFe with axial ligands such as $PcFe(4-VP)_2$[Pc: Phthalocyanine, 4-VP: 4-Vinylpyridine] and $PcFe(VIM)_2$[VIM: 1-Vinylimidazole] afforded powderlike, pure dark greenish blue colored products. The resulted products are soluble in $CH_2Cl_2$ and found to be complexes of the type $PcFeL_2$. Spectral properties were studied with ATR-FTIR and UV/Vis. Thermal and electrical characterization was also performed. Phthalocyanine complexes exhibit useful properties such as UV/Vis blocking, antistatic characteristics and excellent thermal stability and we anticipate various applicability in numerous products.

  • The ultraviolet blocking agents used to skincare are largely classified ultraviolet scattering agent and ultraviolet absorbent agents. There are UVC, UVB, and UBA in ultraviolet ray(UV) showing shorter wavelength than visible light. Both visible light and UVA give rise to 1st dark-skinned phenomena. On exposure of the skin to UV, phenomena of skin variation are termed sunburn or suntan. There are chronic and acute adverse reactions in skin response to UV. The latter is caused by UVB, which has mainly effects on the skin. But lately due to destruction of ozone layer, UVA has more serious irritation on the skin than UVB. In this paper spectrometric properties of UV absorbent agents such as PABA, octyl-PABA, Urocanic acid, and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy benzophenone in vitro have been investigate. As results, it was found that the three fomer were more suitable than the last. UV scattering measurements on the sample used inorganic pigments showed that pigments containing titanium dioxide had a better scattering effects than the inorganic pigments such as $Fe_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$, etc.

  • Hydroxyapatite (HAP) was prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis method and also silver was introduced on the surface of HAP through an ion exchange reaction. The crystal phase and morphology of HAP were then evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the absorption property of HAP was characterized by diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy. The presence of silver nanoparticles on the surface of HAP was also verified by XRD and TEM analysis. Particularly, the silver doped HAP showed an enhanced absorption property in UV-Vis region compared to that of the pristine HAP.

  • Ultra-violet rays are very harmful to eye health care. The blocking of ultra-violet rays and a reduction of optical reflection in the visible light range, which is to increase the share of transmitted light, and avoid the formation of ghost images in imaging, are important for the applications of polymer eyeglasses lenses. In this study, the high-refractive index polymer lenses, n=1.67, were fabricated by injection-molded method with the xylene diisocyanate monomer, 2,3-bis-1-propanethiol monomer, and benzotriazol UV absorber (SEESORB 709) mixture. To reduce the reflection of the polymer lens surfaces, multi-layer anti-reflection (AR) coatings were coated for both sides of the polymer lens using an E-beam evaporation system. The optical properties of the UV blocking polymer lens were characterized using a UV-visible spectrometer. The material properties of the thin films, which were composed AR coating layers, refractive index, and surface roughness, were analyzed by ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy. As a result, the fabricated polymer lens perfectly blocked ultra-violet rays below 395 nm with a blocking rate greater than 99%.

  • A polarizing spectacle lens having a perfect blocking of ultraviolet light and a partial blocking of blue light and having photochromic properties has been developed. It is a functional spectacle lens which can be used as a spectacle lens in the daytime, which plays a role of sunglass in a space with strong ultraviolet rays, dramatically reducing glare caused by late-night driving or reflected light. Photochromism was recovered in 0.5 second dark reaction and 3 seconds recovery time. The polarization function was about 95%. Ultraviolet rays were completely blocked and blue light was reduced by about 30%. A lens that combines photochromic and UV blocking and polarization functions is the first attempt at investigating the domestic market.
