  • We have designed and synthesized the colorimetric chemosensor through the reactions of 1,2-anthraquinone and indol-3-carboxaldehyde. Due to its well conjugated D-${\pi}$-A system and the existence of NH-fragment in indole moiety, we expected that the chemosensor can detect target anions with NH-fragment in indole part of the structure. In this regard, UV-Vis absorption spectra were measured to investigate sensing properties of the probe toward different anions in DMSO. This chemosensor shows to detect fluoride anions with absorption change in intensity. These properties are mainly related to the deprotonation effect. ICT system in this molecule was also observed by the computational approach using Material Studio 4.3 package.

  • We have investigated quantitative measurement techniques of the degree of dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). SWNTs were suspended in aqueous media using a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant. SWNTs with different dispersion states were prepared by controlling the intensity and time of sonication and centrifugation. The laser spectroscopic techniques were employed to characterize the dispersion state; i.e., raman fluorescence and absorption spectroscopic techniques. Raman spectroscopy has been used to probe the dispersion and aggregation state of SWNTs in solution. Individually suspended SWNTs show increased fluorescence peaks and decreased roping peaks at a raman shift 267 $cm^{-1}$ compared with the samples containing bundles of SWNTs. The ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-vis-NIR) absorption spectrum of decanted supernatant samples show sharp van Hove singularity peaks

  • Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique is the best candidate for the future molecular electronic devices. But, these molecular thin film devices require the bulk properties that are influenced by the molecular orientations. So, this is of current interest in molecular electronic device fabrications of new materials. In this study, quantitative evaluation of molecular orientation in LB films of PAAS was performed by comparing the absorption intensities of the FT-IR transmission and reflection-absorption spectra and the polarized UV/visible absorption spectra. It was found that the polar angle( $\theta$ ) of the dipole moment is about 68$^{\circ}$ and the tilting angle of the alkyl chain is about 11.5$^{\circ}$

  • Conjugated polycarbosilanes with diacetylene and aromatic groups of thiophene or phenylene simultaneously present in the polymer backbone such as poly[[1,4-bis(thiophenyl)buta-1,3-diyne]-alt-(dimethylsilane)], poly[[1,4-bis(thiophenyl)buta-1,3-diyne]-alt-(diphenylsilane)], poly[[1,4-bis(phenyl)buta-1,3-diyne]-alt-(dimethylsilane)],and poly[[1,4-bis(phenyl)buta-1,3-diyne]-alt-(diphenylsilane)] have been prepared. The characteristic C=C stretching frequencies appear at 2177-2179㎝-1 in the IR spectra of the polymers. The molecular weights of these polymers were detemined by GPC. All of these materials are soluble in organic solvents such as THF and chloroform, and thermally stable up to 200℃ in general without any weight loss under nitrogen. The prepared materials in THF solvent show a maximum absorption peak in the range of 334-356 nm with a molar absorptivity of 10³∼10ⁿ(n=5)L/(cm·mol) in the UV-visible absorption spectra. A maximum emission peak in the range of 403-550 nm is also observed in the fluorescence emission spectra. Both absorption and emission spectra strongly indicate that the obtained polycarbosilanes contain the new conjugated systems along the polymer main chain.

  • In this research, we focused on the development of cy3 dye with high thermal stability and good solubility for LCD color filter. Cy3 dyes were prepared through the synthetic procedure of two steps. The synthesized cy3 dyes were characterized by using NMR, FT-IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and TGA. These cy3 dyes showed maximum absorption wave length (${\lambda}_{max}$) in the range of 549~555 nm in UV/Vis spectrum. And we confirmed that solubility characteristics and thermal stability of cy3 dyes were dependent on the structure of counter cation. Cy3 dyes with methyl counter cation and ethyl counter cation have good solubility in organic solvents such as chloroform, ethanol, and PGME. Moreover, Cy3 dye with ethyl counter cation gave excellent thermal stability in TGA thermograms. And Cy3 dye with ethyl counter cation showed good result in photoresist film test.

  • Langmuir-Blodgett method is the best candidate for the development of the future molecular electronic devices. But, this molecular thin film devices requires the bulk properties that was influenced by the molecular arrangements and orientations. So, these are of current interest in molecular electronic device fabrications of new materials. In this experiment, the N-docosylquinolium-TCNQ LB films were deposited on the surface pressures of 30 mN/m and 45 mN/m. We measured the polarized UV/visible absorptions of deposited films for the study of the molecular arrangements and orientations. The polarized UV/visible absorption variation on the incidence and polarization angle of the LB film deposited on the surface pressure of 45 mN/m shown methodically variated. So, we concluded that the LB film deposited on 45 mN/mwas arranged better than that obtained at 30 mN/m.

  • Pharmaceutical wastewater effluents are well known for their difficult elimination by traditional biotreatment methods and their important contribution to environmental pollution due to its fluctuating and recalcitrant nature. OTC is one of the nonbiodegradable antibiotics that makes antibiotic-resistant, so it can make be high risk for environment. NZVI can be a good choice for removal of OTC in aqueous solution. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the amounts of NZVI and OTC to be used at pH 3 and under 200 W, UV-A irradiation. The responses were removal percent of absorption at 290 and 348 nm, TOC and COD of OTC. In the optimum condition, Linear model was performed 155 ppm of OTC were removed by 1000 ppm NZVI after 6.5 hours and the removal efficiency of absorption at 290 and 348 nm, TOC and COD were 87, 95, 85 and 89 percent, respectively. In the similar process, there is no organic compound after 14 hours. The parameters ORP, DO and pH were investigated for 6:30 hours to study the type of NZVI reaction in process. In the beginning of reaction, oxidation was the dominant reaction after 3 hours, photocatalytic reaction was remarkable. The mechanism of OTC degradation is proposed by HPLC/ESI-MS and four by products were found. Also the rate constants (first order kinetic chain reaction model) were 0.0099, 0.0021, 0.0010, 0.0049 and $0.0074min^{-1}$, respectively.

  • Antibiotics have been issued recently in water environments because of potential impacts on ecosystem and public health. This study was aimed to investigating the degradation of antibiotics such as tetracycline, lincomycin, sulfamethazine and cephradine using gamma ray irradiation. And the toxicity before and after irradiation on antibiotics was tested in order to examine the aquatic eco-risk assessment by aquatic organisms. In addition, comparing tests on toxicity for gamma ray and UV irradiated antibiotics was conducted. Four different antibiotics were prepared by concentration of 30 mg/L with demi-water respectively. The absorption dose of gamma ray was ranged from 0.2 to 2 kGy. The concentration of four antibiotics was gradually decreased corresponding to the increase of the absorption dose. A method for toxicity assessment using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was evaluated to the most acceptable compared with methods by Daphnia magna and Microtox$^{(R)}$ in terms of sensibility. It showed that the reduction of toxicity on antibiotics treated by gamma ray was superior comparing to the test results obtained from UV treatment. By-products from antibiotics treated by gamma ray were easily decomposed by microorganism and their toxicity was also evaluated to low.

  • We firstly present the unified Far-UV continuum map of the Taurus-Auriga-Perseus (TPA) complex, one of the largest local associations of dark cloud located in (l, b)=([152,180], [-28, 0]), by merging both FIMS and GALEX. The FUV continuum map shows that dust extinction correlate well with the FUV around the complex. It says strong absorption in the dense Taurus cloud and Auriga cloud. Although the column density of Perseus and California cloud is similar to Taurus' and Auriga's, Perseus and California cloud do not show strong absorption in FUV because they are more distant than Taurus and Auriga cloud. We also present the dust scattering simulation based on Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer technique. Through the result of Monte-Carlo dust scattering simulation and comparing the result with FIMS-GALEX unified map we gain deeper understanding related to the spatial dust distribution of TPA region. As a preliminary result of the simulation we present the most probable front face, thickness, albedo, and asymmetry factor in this region, respectively. Through this work we can show a certain inclination of the spatial dust distribution. During this study we have developed the FUV dust scattering simulation code using Monte-Carlo method. We expect that it will be generally used to simulate dust scattering in the Galaxy.

  • Different papers such as toilet and towel tissue, newsprint and copy paper made from reclaimed fibres were characterized using UV-VIS reflectance and fluorescence spectroscopy. The emission properties of the extracts of the papers were also evaluated. Photochemical irradiation at ambient temperatures, and thermal aging of the copy papers at 105$^{\circ}C$ and 150$^{\circ}C$ were performed. Post-colour numbers (PC) were calculated from the reflectance values measured from the corresponding UV-VIS reflectance spectra. Light absorption coefficient spectra were calculated before and after irradiation, and the changes in absorption coefficient were related to the content of chromophores in the papers. Photochemical and thermal discolouration of the copy papers, similar to that of virgin fibres, was readily observed. The influence of changes in the concentrations of fluorescent brightening agents and dyes on the spectral properties was also assessed. Photostabilization studies of the copy papers were performed with the use of polymer additives polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF).
