  • Urethane-acrylate propelymers for secondary coating of optical fiber and high - performance material were prepared from the 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), poly(tetramethylene oxide)glycol(PTMG, Mw 650 or 1000), 1,6-hexanediol(HD), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate(HEA), and dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. UV-Curable polyurethane acrylates were formulated from the urethane-acrylate prepolymers, three types of reactive diluents(DTs) having mono-, di-, and trifunctional-phenoxyethyl acrylate(PEA), hexanediol diacrylate(HDDA), and trimethylolpropane triacrylate(TMPTA), and 1-hydtoxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone(Irgacure 184) as a photoinitiator. The UV-cured films of polyurethane acrylates were obtained by curing using a medium-pressure mercury lamp(U W/cm, $\lambda_{max}=365\;nm)$. In this work, the effects of molecular weights of polyol and diol with low molecular weight into polymer chain on mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of UV-cured polyurethane acrylates were studied. The structure and properties of the films obtained from the UV photopolymerization of urethane-acrylate prepolymer were investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical measurement, tensile testing, and X-ray diffractometry.

  • This study was done for the preparation of macromolecular material with UV-blocking features by adding the benzophenone group that is commonly used as a UV-absorbent and $TiO_2$ which is known to be a very stable material in chemical and physical aspects. Also, we compared the level of UV absorbency of the polymer produced from polymerization with previous materials and measured basic properties such as water content, refractive index and optical transmittance of produced contact lenses. The results of the measurement showed that the refractive index and water content of the contact lens with added UV-absorbent was 1.430~1.440 and 35.0~45.0% respectively, which was similar to that of previous contact lenses. Also, for optical transmittances of each wave length, contact lenses without the UV-absorbent was 89%, 88% and 89% respectively for UV-A, UV-B and visible light, indicating that the UV transmittance is very high though contrary with cases of contact lenses with added 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzophenone and 2,4-dihydroxy-benzophenone which showed transmittances of 0% and 6% respectively for UV-A and UV-B showing a UV-blocking effect. Meanwhile, contact lenses with added $TiO_2$ showed transmittance of 6% and 51% respectively for UV-A and UV-B also showing a UV-blocking effect. The visible transmittance was 77~89% showing that it satisfies the visible transmittance required for ophthalmological materials.

  • In this study, reliability assessment was carried out on UV(ultraviolet) indicators for the application of the indicator method on cultural heritages. As a result, some UV indicators(L, K, and M) proved to be unsuitable due to their low reactivity to UV and high reactivity to RH(relative humidity). On the other hand, indicator S showed considerable color changes and fading due to UV-B and UV-C according to the integral amount of UV irradiation. Indicator S showed the most distinct reaction to UV and a remarkable applicability to exhibition light, which are used in museums. Therefore, UV indicator S is an easy and useful monitoring tool for light environment management in cultural- property conservation facilities.

  • Low pressure mercury lamp type UV equipments have been widely used for cleaning and modification of PCB surfaces. To enhance the productivity of the process, we newly developed remote DBD type atmospheric pressure plasma equipment. The productivity of both equipments could be compared by measuring surface contact angle for various transferring speed. By the result of the measurement, we could verify that the productivity of the atmospheric pressure plasma be superior to the productivity of the UV equipment. XPS experiments confirmed that the surface effect of the UV and atmospheric pressure plasma processing are similar for each other. Organic contamination level was reduced after the processing and some surface elements were oxidized for both cases. Finally, the atmospheric pressure plasma equipment was adapted to flip chip BGA's flux printing process and it was concluded that the printing uniformity be enhanced by the atmospheric pressure plasma surface treatment.

  • The railway catenary systems consist of a complex structure, electrical and mechanical conditions are exposed to dangerous environment due to current collection between pantograph and catenary systems. These two types of conditions for the catenary systems are critically assessed for management and are becoming increasingly more dependent on reliable inspection system. In this paper, a new measurement system which enables inspection of catenary faults was studied and implemented. The system uses wavelength band of ultraviolet (UV) and IR (Infrared) to measure the insulation of corona and temperature of catenary wire. In order to determine the sensitivity of implemented system, the performance test such as distance detection range of UV camera and temperature resolution of IR camera were conducted, respectively. The field test of development system was also conducted in metro and high-speed line using mobile type UV and IR multi-composited measurement systems.

  • Purpose: The ultraviolet reflectance and transmittance of coastal building materials are one of the important factors of ultraviolet radiation in and out of coastal building. In this research, the ultraviolet spectral reflectance of many kinds of building materials was measured. Also, the relationships with the lightness, roughness, and chromaticity, which are surface characteristics, were reviewed and suggested. Method: In this study, according to the CIE classification, the ultraviolet region was defined as short-wavelength region UV-C(10nm~280nm), medium-wavelength region UV-B (280-315 nm), and long-wavelength region UV-A (315-400nm), and the visible light region was defined as (400nm~780nm). Spectrophotometer was used to continuously measure the reflectance from the ultraviolet region to the visible light region. Results: From the measurement results, the ultraviolet reflectance on Wood was shown to be about Visible 55-68%, UV-A* 7-12%, and UV-B 4-5%. Wall tiles are about Visible18-40%, UV-A* 8-20%, and UV-B* 7-8%. That on concrete was shown to be about Visible 37%, UV-A* 28%, and UV-B*19%. Conclusion: The ultraviolet reflectance can be estimated by visible reflectance. Also, it is important to select a variety of materials according to the application when blocking UV.

  • A UV-MFRSR instrument was used to measure the global and diffuse irradiances in 7 narrowband channels in the UV range 299.4, 304.4, 310.9, 317.3. 324.5, 331.3 and 367.4 nm at Gwangju ($35^{circ}\;13'N\;126^{circ}\;50'E$), Korea. Spectral UV-AOD was retrieved using the Langley plot method for data collected from April 2002 to July 2004. Temporal variation of AOD at 367.4 nm ($AOD_{367nm}$) showed a maximum in June ($0.95\pm0.43$) and a minimum in February ($0.31\pm0.14$). Clear seasonal variation of $AOD_{367nm}$ was observed with average values of $0.68\pm0.29,\;0.82\pm0.41,\;0.48\pm0.22\;and\;0.42\pm0.21$ in spring, summer, fall and winter, respectively, Average Angstrom exponent for the entire monitoring period was $2.03\pm0.75$ in the UV-A ($324.5\∼367.4$ nm) range. Seasonal variation of the Angstrom exponent showed a maximum in spring and a minimum in summer. The lowest Angstrom exponent in summer might be due to hygroscopic growth of particles under conditions of high relative humidity. UV-AOD changes under different atmospheric conditions were also analyzed. Uncertainty in retrieving spectral UV-AOD was also estimated to range between $\pm0.218\;at\;304.4\;nm\;and\;\pm0.135\;at\;367.4\;nm$. Major causes of uncertainty were total column ozone retrieval and extraterrestrial irradiance retrieval at shorter and longer wavelengths, respectively.

  • To investigate the quality retention method of salted and semi-dried mackerel fillets, pH, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), trimethylamine (TMA) and total bacterial counts in the fillets that were UV treated for 1, 3, and 4 hr were periodically measured during 48 days of refrigerated storage. The moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, and ash contents were 45.46 %, 18.87 %, 33.75 %, and 2.99 %, respectively. The freshness as determined by pH measurement could be maintained up to 25 days for the control and 31 days for the UV-treated fillets. VBN contents were continually increased over the storage time. The control reached the initial putrid level after 21 days while the UV-treated fillets after $25{\sim}31$ days. A similar tendency was shown for the changes of trimethylamine TMA contents, although the period differed slightly and the increase of the UV treatment time could decrease the TMA contents. The changes on the total bacterial counts of the fillets were maintained under 105 CFU/g during 48days. Especially, due to the effective decrease of the microorganism count by UV treatment at the beginning of the storage, UV -treated fillets showed lower bacterial counts than control over the whole period. E. coli. and Listeria were not detected in any fillets. Combining the above data and the sensory changes, the storage period of the fillets could be prolonged from 15 days at present to 30 days by UV treatments.

  • The deteriorative effect of ultraviolet-B(UV-B) radiation on photosynthesis was assessed by the simultaneous measurement of O$_2$ evolution and chlorophyll(Chl) fluorescence in green pepper. UV-B was given at the intensity of 1 W$.$m$\^$-2/, a dosage often encountered in urban area of Seoul in Korea, to detached leaves. Both Pmax and quantum yield of O$_2$ evolution was rapidly decreased, in a parallel phase, with increasing time of UV-B treatment. Chl fluorescence parameters were also significantly affected. Fo was increased while both Fm and Fv were decreased. Photochemical efficiency of PSII(Fv/Fm) was also declined, although to a lesser extent than Pmax. Both qP and NPQ were decreased similarly with increasing time of UV-B treatment. However, PS I remained stable. The addition of lincomycin prior to UV-B treatment accelerated the decline in Fv/Fm to some extent, suggesting that D1 protein turnover may play a role in overcoming the harmful effect of UV-B. The amount of photosynthetic pigments was less affected than photosynthetic response in showing decline in Chl a and carotenoids after 24 h-treatment. Presumptive flavonoid contents, measured by changes in absorbance at 270 nm , 300 nm and 330nm, were all increased by roughly 50% after 8 h-treatment. Among antioxidant enzymes, activities of catalase and peroxidase were steadily increased until 12h of UV-B treatment whereas ascorbate perxidase, dehydroascorvate reductase and glutathione reductase did not show any significant change. The results indicate that deteriorative effect of UV-B on photosynthesis precedes the protection exerted by pigment synthesis and antioxidant enzymes.
