Granular activated carbon (GAC) has been identified as a best available technology (BAT) by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for removal disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) were used to investigate four types of carbon (F400, Norit1240, Norit40S, and Aquasorb1500) for their affinity to absorb natural organic matter (NOM). DOC, $UV_{254}$, and Total dissolved nitrogen (TON) concentrations were measured in the column effluent to track GAC breakthrough. DOC and $UV_{254}$ breakthrough occurred at around 3500 bed volumes (BVs) of operation for all GACs investigated. The $UV_{254}$ breakthrough curves showed 33% to 48% at 8000 BVs, when the DOC was 48% to 65%. All GACs showed greater removal in DOC than $UV_{254}$. The NORIT1240 GAC was determined to have the highest adsorption capacity for DOC and $UV_{254}$. The removal of nitrate (NOTN) had not broken through over BVs. The initial TON breakthrough curves were started around 50%, when the DOC breakthrough was only 10 % at 500 BVs. The curves were gradually increased after 3500 BVs and approximately 69% through 81% of TON breakthrough occurred at 8000 BVs. All of the GACs were able to remove TON, in the case of this investigation the majority of the TON was present as DON. Because nitrate nitrogen was seldom removed and ammonium nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) was not detected in the effluent from RSSCTs even though raw water. The carbon usage rate of DOC was from 2 to 6 times less than that of TON. The NORIT1240 GAC demonstrated the best performance in terms of DOC removal, while the F400 GAC was best in terms of TON removal. Excitation emission matrix(EEM) analysis was used to show that GAC adsorption successfully removed most of Humic-like DOC and Fulvic-like DOCs. However, soluble microbial product(SMP)-like DOC in the absence of raw water were detected in the NORIT40S and Aquasorb1500 GAC. The authors assumed that this results is due probably to the part of GAC in the RSSCT which was converted into biological activated carbon(BAC). To compare with organics removal by GAC according to preloading, the virgin GACs had readily accessible sites that were adsorbed DOC more rapidly than preloaded GACs, but the TDN removal had not showed differences between those GACs.

New control methods are proposed for indoor air quality by removing fine airborne dust-particles. As suspended fine dust-particles contain inorganic dust as well as fine organic bacteria, studies for simultaneous control of these contaminants are required. In this study, photocatalytic disinfection of indoor suspended microorganisms such as E. coli and Bacillus subtilis is performed by three types of photocatalysts with UVA irradiation. The UVA irradiation strength was controlled to the minimum $3{\mu}W/cm^2$, and ZnO, $TiO_2$, and ZnO/Laponite ball were used as the catalysts. The results indicate that E. coli was removed over 80 % after about 2 hours of reaction with UVA and all three types of photocatalysts, whereas only with UVA, around 50 % E. coli removal was obtained. Among the catalysts, ZnO/Laponite composite ball was found to have similar sterilizing capacity to $TiO_2$. However, in case of B. subtilis, which has thick cell wall in its spore state, disinfection was not effective under the low UVA irradiation condition, even with the catalysts. Further studies need to figure out the optimal UVA irradiation ranges as well as photocatalysts doses to control airborne dust, to provide healthy clean air environment.

Ballast water is carried by ships to ensure stability, trim and structural integrity. When a ship loads cargo, the ballast water is discharged. When foreign marine microorganisms are introduced into new marine environments, they pose a threat to the local marine ecological system. UV system is commonly used for the disinfection of waste and surface water. This method would not be as efficient because some species do survive to form viable populations, much of the sediment and organisms at the bottom of tanks, and may become serious pests. In this paper, we designed and implemented ballast water treatment system using fuzzy PID controller to prevent lamp damage, and to reduce the formation of the viable populations. The experiments were conducted with ballast water treatment system using fuzzy PID controller with short time exposure to the temperature above $40^{\circ}C$. This system was shown to be effective by significantly reducing bacterial population and lamp life extension through appropriate temperature of ballast water.

Potassium iodide (KI) TRO sensor for measuring total residual oxidant which is an index for disinfection and neutralization in ballast water has been constructed. The results of UV absorption wavelength and absorbance test in various TRO concentrations show high linear correlation ($r^2=0.9825$) at 350 nm wavelengths and it can be possible to visualize numerical value of TRO concentration (0.1~7.0 mg/L). The result of comparison test according to TRO concentration between the KI based TRO sensor system and the DPD based TRO sensor system showed identical trend. Overall results indicated that the KI TRO sensing system could be applied for continuous TRO concentration measurement in ballast water treatment system.
This study was carried out to investigate the formation of DBPs(Disinfection By-products) such as trihalomethane(THMs) and haloacetic acid(HAAs) by chlorination in raw water and finished water of Water Treatment Plant(WTP). The formation of THMs was increased with the increase of pH and reaction time. HAAs was found as a high formation at a pH 7 and low formation at pH 9. THMFP(Trihalomethane Formation Potential) was the highest formation potential in raw water of Pu-1 and the lowest in raw water of Pa-1. In case of HAAFP(Haloacetic acid formation potential), So-1 showed the highest value, while Pa-1 showed the lowest value. It was investigated the relationship between HAAs and organic matters which were described as DOC(dissolved organic carbon) and $UV_{254}$. In both DOC and $UV_{254}$ versus HAAFP, Pu-1 showed the good correlation coefficients($r^2$) with 0.95 and 0.84, respectively. For three WTP investigated, DBPs(THMs + HAAs) was shown over the range of $42.00{\sim}49.36{\mu}g/L$. This result might be due to the different characteristic of organic matters in raw water and the difference of chlorine dosage for a water treatment.
Controlling of microorganisms in the industrial process is important for production and distribution of hatching and table eggs. In the previous study, we reported that chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) gas of a proper concentration and humidity can significantly reduce the load of Salmonella spp. on eggshells. In this study, we compared microbial reduction efficacy on egg's surface using hatching eggs and table eggs, internal quality of table eggs, and hatchability after both the conventional method (washing and UV expose, fumigation with formalin) and $ClO_2$ gas disinfection. Application of 40 ppm $ClO_2$ gas to the table and hatching eggs, respectively, reduced the aerobic plate count (APC) with no statistical difference compared with the conventional methods. Additionally, we didn't observed that any significant difference in albumin height, Haugh unit (HU), and yolk color, this result confirms that 40 ppm $ClO_2$ had no effect on the internal quality of the table eggs, when comparing with the UV treatment method. The hatchability of hatching eggs was not statistical different between formaldehyde fumigation and 80 ppm $ClO_2$ gas treatment, though the value was decreased at high concentration of 160 ppm $ClO_2$ gas. From these results, we recommend that $ClO_2$ gas can be used as a safe disinfectant to effectively control egg surface microorganisms without affecting egg quality.
Recently, the results of vital tissue test showed that nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) as a disinfection by-product (DBP), could be regarded as a carcinogen because a tumor was observed in organs. U.S.EPA indicated 0.7 ng/L as exposure concentration of NDMA based on a risk assessment target with a lifetime cancer risk of $10^{-6}$. Several recent studies have shown that UV oxidation could remove NDMA. However, UV oxidation is uneconomical and can reform NDMA after treating. In addition, the treatment mechanism of adsorption has not been founddue to the uncertainty of NDMA pathway. In addtion, NDMA has a radioisotope $^{14}C$-labeled which can be analyzed at low concentration of NDMA by Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC). This study has investigated NDMA determination using LSC at an extremely low range from 1 to 100 ng/L and NDMA removal by powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption. For $^{14}C$-NDMA by LSC, the highest correlation over 99% between count number and NDMA concentrationwas obtained with possibility of $^{14}C$-NDMA concentration up to 1 ng/L. In the presence of PAC ranging from 50 to 10,000 mg/L, $^{14}C$-NDMA was removed from 18% to 97% for Sigma-Aldrich corporation (S-A co.) and from 9% to 93% by PAC for Daejung corporation (Dj co.). Hence it was found that the removal efficiency by PAC adsorption could vary depending on PAC types from different companies. For PAC adsorption capacity of $^{14}C$-NDMA using the Freundlich isotherm, $K_f$ and 1/n of PAC from S-A co. were $2.67\times10^{-3}$ ng/mg and 1.009, while those of PAC from Dj co. were $1.30\times10^{-3}$ ng/mg and 0.994, respectively. Thus, PAC from S-A co. showed twice higher adsorption capacity than Dj co.
This study was aimed at providing optimal water treatment processes based on various required water quality for utilization of the Saemangeum lake water as water supply alternatives to this area. Various water treatment methods were considered for investigation there characteristics, pollution removal rate, pros and cons in order to select appropriate water treatment processes satisfying the required water quality for different purposes. As results, the FDA system for SS, turbidity, BOD removals, UV treatment for coliform, BOD removals, FNR process for T-N, T-P removals, and ECRS process for desalination purpose were found to be better methods in senses of removal efficiency, operation and maintenance. Case studies were provided with cost analysis for field applications in the Saemangeum area.

For D-WTP's sedimentation basin and distribution reservoir, and water tap the predictive models proposed tentatively herein included the models for estimating TTHM concentration in precipitated water, for treated water and for tap water, and the estimated correlation formula between treated water's TTHM concentration and tap water. As for TTHM-concentration predictive model in sedimentation water, the coefficient of determination is 0.866 for best-fitted short-term $DOC{\times}UV_{254}$ based Model (TTHM). As for $HAA_5$-concentration predictive model in sedimentation water, the coefficient of determination is 0.947 for the suitable $UV_{254}$-based model ($HAA_5$). In case of the predictive model in treated water, the coefficient of determination is 0.980 for best-fitted $DOC{\times}UV_{254}$ based model (TTHM) using coagulated waters, while the coefficient of determination is 0.983 for best-fitted $DOC{\times}UV_{254}$ based model ($HAA_5$) using coagulated waters, which described the $HAA_5$ concentration well. However, the predictive model for tap water could not be compatible with the one for treated water, only except for possibility inducing correlation formula for prediction, [i.e., the correlation formula between TTHM concentration and tap water was verified as TTHM (tap water) = $1.162{\times}TTHM$ (treated water), while $HAA_5$ (tap water) = $0.965{\times}HAA_5$ (treated water).] The correlation analysis between DOC and $KMnO_4$ consumption by process resulted in higher relationship with filtrated water, showing that its regression is $DOC=0.669{\times}KMnO_4$ consumption - 0.166 with 0.689 of determination coefficient. By substituting it to the existing DOC-based model ($HAA_5$) for treated water, the consequential model formula was made as follows; $HAA_5=8.35(KMnO_4\;consumption{\times}0.669-0.166)^{0.701}(Cl_2)^{0.577}t^{0.150}0.9216^{(pH-7.5)}1.022^{(Temp-20^{\circ}C)}$
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the change of molecular weight (MW) profiles in natural organic matter (NOM) through various treatment processes (coagulation, granular activated carbon (GAC), and ozonation) using high performance size exclusion chromatography based on ultraviolet absorbance and dissolved organic detection (HPSEC-UVA-DOC). In addition, relationships between MW profiles and disinfection by-production (DBP) formation were evaluated. Each treatment process results in significant different effects on NOM profiles. Coagulation is effective to remove high molecular weight NOM, while GAC is effective to remove low molecular weight NOM. Ozonation removes only a small portion of NOM, while it induces a significant reduction of UV absorbance due to breakdown of the aromatic groups. All treated waters are chlorinated, and chlorination DBPs such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) are measured under formation potential conditions. Both THM and HAA formation potentials were significantly reduced through the coagulation process. GAC was more effective to reduce THM formation compared to HAA formation reduction, while ozonation showed significant HAA reduction compared to THM reduction.
