  • Underwater acoustic sensor array can detect acoustic signal in underwater and the sensor array can be mounted in each left, right or front side of the UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). The sensor array could be conformal array and effected turbulent boundary layer flow noise. Therefore, in this paper numerical simulations were performed to know the how the outer flow noise affect the hydrophone which embedded in the elastomer. Corcos wall pressure model was used as turbulent boundary layer flow noise and this model was applied to the frequency density function. Characteristics of transfer function according the kx wave number were simulated and design parameters were thickness of elastomer, density, and modulus of elasticity. Based on the simulation results when increasing the thickness of elastomer noise reduction was increased. This results can be applied to the design of conformal array of UUV.

  • The authors adopt the Unmanned Undersea Vehicle(UUV), the shape of which is like a manta. They call here it Manta UUV. Manta UUV has been designed from the similar concept of the UUV called Manta Test Vehicle(MTV), which was originally built by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center of USA(Lisiewicz and French, 2000; Simalis et al., 2001; U.S. Navy, 2004). The present study deals with the effect of Reynolds numbers on hydrodynamic forces acting on Manta UUV at large angles of attack. The large angles of attack cover the whole range of 0 to ${\pm}$ 180 degrees in horizontal plane and in vertical plane respectively. Static test at large attack angles has been carried out with two Manta UUV models in circulating water channel. The authors assume that the experimental results of hydrodynamic forces (lateral force, yaw moment, vertical force and pitch moment) are analyzed into two components, which are lift force component and cross-flow drag component. First of all, Based on two dimensional cross-flow drag coefficient at 90 degrees of attack angle, the cross-flow drag component at whole range of attack angles is calculated. Then the remainder is assumed to be the lift force component. The only cross-flow drag component is assumed to be subject to Reynolds number.entstly the authors suggest the methodology to predict hydrodynamic derivertives acting on the full-scale Manta UUV.

  • An accurate prediction of the hydrodynamic maneuvering darivatives is essential to desing a robust control system of a UUV(unmanned underwater vehicle). Typically, these derivatives were estimated by either the towing tank experiment or semi-empirical methods. With the enhancement of high performance computing capacity, a numerical analysis using computational fluid dynamics has reach the level of experiment. Therefore, the aims of the present research are to numerically develop a computational model for the vertical planar motion mechanism of a UUV and to estimate the hydrodynamics loads in 6-DOF. The target structure of the present study was manta type UUV (12meter length). The numerical model was developed in 1/ 6 model scale. Numerical results were compared with the results of the towing tank experiment for validation. In the present study, a commercial RANS-based viscous solver STARCCM+ (ver 17.06) was used.

  • For the accurate estimation of the position and orientation of a UUV (unmanned underwater vehicle), a low-cost AHRS (attitude heading reference system) was developed using a low-cost IMU (inertial measurement unit) sensor which provides information on the 3D acceleration, 3D turning rate and 3D earth-magnetic field data in the object coordinate system. The main hardware system is composed of an IMU sensor (ADIS16405) and TMS320F28335, which is coded with an extended kalman filter algorithm with a 50-Hz sampling frequency. Through an experimental gimbal device, good estimation performance for the pitch, roll, and yaw angles of the developed AHRS was verified by comparing to those of a commercial AHRS called the MTi system. The experimental results are here presented and analyzed.

  • This paper compares methods for attitude estimation of a UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). Attitude estimation plays a key role in underwater navigation using DVL(Doppler Velocity Log). The paper proposes attitude estimation methods using EKF(Extended Kalman Filter), UKF(Unscented Kalman Filter), and CF(Complementary Filter). It derives methods using the measurements from MEMS-AHRS(Microelectromechanical Systems-Attitude Heading Reference System) and DVL. The methods are used for navigation in a test pool and their navigation performance is compared. The results suggest that even if there is no measurement relative to some absolute landmarks, DVL-only navigation can be useful for navigation in a limited time and range.

  • Mathematical model for coupled motions of Manta-type Unmanned Undersea Vehicle(UUV) moving with six degrees of freedom, is formulated. Furthermore, a calculation method for estimating the linear hydrodynamic derivatives acting on UUV, is proposed, and some of the estimated linear hydrodynamic derivatives are compared with results of captive model experiment. Based on linear dynamic model of UUV, a study was made to examine dynamic stability and turning ability in horizontal plane. And directional stability and required elevation rudder angles for neutrally operating in vertical plane, are also discussed.

  • An active synthetic aperture sonar mounted on small UUV is generated various trajectory disturbances in the traveling path by the influence of external underwater environments. That is the phase mismatch occurs in the synthetic aperture processing of the signals reflected from seabed objects and fetches the detection performance decreases. In this paper, we compensated deteriorated images by the active SAS autofocus processing using DPC and analyzed the effects of detection performance when the periodic trajectory disturbances occur in the side direction at a constant velocity and straight movement of UUV. Through simulations, the deteriorated images according to the periodic disturbance magnitudes and period variations in the platform were compensated using difference phases processing of the overlapping displaced phase centers on the adjacent transmitted ping signals, and we conformed the improved performance characteristics of azimuth resolution and detection images at 3dB reference point.

  • In the case of a small UUV operating an active synthetic aperture sonar, various velocity disturbances may occur on the path due to the influence of external underwater environment, and this causes phase errors in coherent synthetic aperture processing, which has a large influence on the detected image. In this paper, when a periodic sinusoidal velocity disturbance is generated in the traveling direction, the phase generated by the round trip slope range at each position is estimated the cross correlation coefficient for multiple received signals and compensated the position variation in the overlapped DPC by the average value within the maximum allowable width. Through simulations, it has been confirmed that the images degraded by the velocity disturbance amplitude and fluctuating frequency of the UUV are removed from the false targets and the performance of azimuth resolution is improved by the proposed phase compensation method.
