  • In this study, aqueous polyurethane dispersion(PUD) was synthesized using polyhexamethylene carbonate glycol (PHMCG) as soft segment, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) as hard segment. Also, polyurethane/clay nanocomposites were prepared by adding pristine montmorillonite (PM) and organically modified clays, C15A and C30B into PUD. The degree of clay dispersion in the nanocomposites was investigated using XRD and the physical and thermal properties were examined through UTM and TGA. These results showed that nanocomposites with C15A gave higher physical and thermal properties than those with C30B or PM. As a result, the properties of nanocomposites were observed to vary depending on the types of clay modifiers and clay contents.

  • The polyurethane resin used for the garment skin leather surface coating was synthesized by varying the content of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in [NCO] / [OH] mole % ratio. The mechanical properties of the synthesized polyurethane resin were analyzed by SEM, FT-IR, UTM. As the [NCO] / [OH] mole % ratio of nonionic poly ethylene glycol (PEG) increased, there was no change in flexural resistance (dry, wet) and abrasion resistance and tensile strength measurement value were lowered. In contrast, the elongation property values were increased. The result of viscosity measurement showed that the viscosity became thinner with increasing [NCO] / [OH] mole % of PEG.

  • This study predicts the strength of rotary brace damper by analyzing a new set of probabilistic models using the usual method of multiple linear regressions (MLR) and advanced machine-learning methods of multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), Rotary brace damper can be easily assembled with high energy-dissipation capability. To investigate the behavior of this damper in structures, a steel frame is modeled with this device subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. Several response parameters are considered, and the performance of damper in reducing each response is evaluated. MLR and MARS methods were used to predict the strength of this damper. Displacement was determined to be the most effective parameter of damper strength, whereas the thickness did not exhibit any effect. Adding thickness parameter as inputs to MARS and MLR models did not increase the accuracies of the models in predicting the strength of this damper. The MARS model with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.127 and mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.090 performed better than the MLR model with an RMSE of 0.221 and MAE of 0.181.

  • The electromagnet in Maglev vehicles controls the voltage in its winding to maintain the air gap, a clearance between the electromagnet and guideway, within an allowable deviation, with strongly interacting with the flexible guideway. Thus, the vibration characteristics of guideway plays important role in dynamics of Maglev vehicles using electromagnet as an active suspension system. The effects of the guideway's vibrational characteristics on dynamics of the Maglev vehicle UTM-01 are analyzed. The coupled equations of motion of the vehicle/guideway with 3 DOFs are derived. Eigenvalues are calculated and frequency response analysis is also performed for a clear understanding of the dynamic characteristics due to guideway vibration characteristics. To verify the results, tests of the urban Mgalev vehicle UTM-02 are carried out. It is recommended that the natural frequency of the guideway be minimized and its damping ratio in the Maglev vehicle with a 5-states feedback control law as a levitation control law.

  • This research investigates the feasibility of ceramic specimens made from Primary clay and Red Hwangto with MSWI fly ash. Specimens preduced by mix-design maximum 20 wt% MSWI fly ash were analysed by SEM, UTM, ICP, etc. As a result of measurement,$P_{10}$ specimen was improved on bending strength and $R_5$ specimen was improved on compressive and bending strength. Also amount of extracted heavy metal was suitable for regulatory limits. This indicates that MSWI fly ash is indeed suitable for the partial replacement of ceramic materials in bricks.

  • A parasitological investigation on trematode metacercariae was made on 62 freshwater fishes of 13 species in northern Thailand; Cyclocheilichthys apogon, Puntioplites proctozysron, Labiobarbus siamensis, Barbodes gonionotus, Barbodes altus, Henicorhynchus siamensis, Osteochilus hasselti, Notopterus notopterus, Mystacoleucus marginatus, Anabas testudineus, Systomus orphoides, Morulius chrysophykadian, and Hampala macrolepidota. The fish were caught over the summer period (February-May 2007) from 2 Chiang Mai water reservoirs, i.e., the Mae Ngad (UTM 47Q E 503200, 47Q N 2119300) and the Mae Kuang Udomtara (UTM 47Q E 513000, 47Q N 2092600) Reservoirs in Chiang Mai province, Thailand. The prevalence of heterophyid (Haplorchis taichui and Haplorchoides sp.) metacercariae in these fish was 83.9% and 74.2% in the Mae Ngad and Mae Kuang Udomtara Reservoirs, respectively. The highest intensity of heterophyid metacercariae in H. siamensis in the Mae Ngad was 120.4 and that in P. proctozysron in the Mae Kuang Udomtara was 180.0. The fish, A. testudineus, C. apogon, and M. chrysophykadian, were not found to be infected with H. taichui metacercariae. The results show that the freshwater fish in Chiang Mai water reservoirs are heavily infected with H. taichui and Haplorchoides sp. metacercariae.

  • The purpose of research is to mix the fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerator in the recycled Polypropylene and to recycle. The specimen was produced by mixing 20 wt.% of MSWI fly ash at maximum in the recycled Polypropylene and the particle size analyzer, DSC, TGA, SEM and UTM instruments were used to analyze the physical chemical properties of the specimen. As a result of measurement, the average particle size of MSWI fly ash was $18.08\;{\mu}m$. In TGA analysis, the temperature of specimen S-5 at 50% of weight decrease was risen by $7^{\circ}C$ higher than specimen S-1. In UTM measurement, specimen S-2 showed the maximum strength for tensile strength and specimen S-3 showed the maximum strength for flexural strength. But, impact strength was decreased according to the increasing proportion of MSWI fly ash. In conclusion, when the proper amount of MSWI fly ash was added to the recycled Polypropylene, thermal endurance, tensile strength and flexural strength could be increased, but impact strength was decreased.

  • Wood-plastic composites represents a growing class of materials used by the residential construction industry and furniture industry. In this study, the effect of flame retardants on the flammability and mechanical properties of wood flour-high density polyethylene(HDPE) composites were studied. we were manufactured wood flour-HDPE composites by modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder with L/D ratio of 42. The flame retardant properties were used limiting oxygen index(LOI) and mechanical properties were measured by universal testing machine(UTM). The Morphological analysis of composites were analyzed by Scanning electron microscope(SEM). It was found that Ammonium polyphosphate can effectively reduce the flammability of the wood flour-HDPE composites. Marginal reduction in the mechanical properties of the composites was found with addition of flame retardants. SEM images showed that the coupling agent improved wood flour-HDPE interfacial bonding.

  • Underground tunnelling is one of the sustainable construction methods which can facilitate the increasing passenger transportation in the urban areas and benefit the community in the long term. Tunnelling in various ground conditions requires careful consideration of the stability factor. This paper investigates three dimensional stability of a shallow circular tunnel in a layered soil. Upper bound theorem of limit analysis was utilised to solve the tunnel face stability problem. A three dimensional kinematic admissible failure mechanism was improved to model a layered soil and limiting assumptions of the previous studies were resolved. The study includes calculation of the minimum support pressure acting on the face of the excavation in closed-face excavations. The effects of the characteristics of the layers on the minimum support pressure were examined. It was found that the ratio of the thickness of cover layers particularly when a weak layer is overlying a stronger layer, has the most significant influence on the minimum tunnel support pressure. Comparisons have been made with the results of the numerical modelling using FLAC3D software. Results of the current study were in a remarkable agreement with those of numerical modelling.

  • In this study, the analysis technique of fracture stress using the reflection coefficient of SAW reflected from a brittle solid with surface crack has been studied. Fracture stress of brittle solid with surface crack has been obtained by the function of the critical stress intensity factor and the maximum normalized stress intensity factor of the crack in the body. And the maximum normalized stress intensity factor of a surface crack can be inferred from a measurement of reflection coefficient of SAW. In experiment, the surface cracks ranging from 0.5mm to 0.9mm in crack depth has been made at the center of each Pyrex disc, and the SAW wedge transducer has been set up for the pitch-catch mode. It has been compared the theoretical values of the fracture stress calculated from the reflection coefficient of SAW with the values of the fracture stress measured from UTM.
