Chinese Elements in RPG Game of USA, JAPAN, and KOREA (中国元素在国外RPG游戏角色造型中的应用分析 )

  • As the market sheare of the Chinese game market across the world has been largely expanded over a decade, big game exporters of USA, Japan, Korea have developed Chinese factors and promoted export strategies, that target China. The Purpose of this study is to analyze the popular game characters of USA, Japan and Korea in order to provide empirical analysis of traditional Chinese elements applied in existing games. The RPG games in USA, Japan and Korea were selected for the contents analysis of the Chinese elements to show how the existing game companies used Chinese elements. The main findings of the research from survey data are rather inconsistent with the content analysis. In particular, all the RPG game companies of USA, Japan and Korea showed a remarkable ratio of using Manzu clothes more than Hanzu clothes. But, the preference of real game users on the Manzu style were lower than Hanzu style. Moreover, Chinese users showed more preference of the game character background that users more deepen Chinese culture. We suggest that applying Chinese elements need to be more selective based on real user's demand.

A Study on The Characteristics of Game Theme : Focusing RPGs in USA and Japan (게임 테마의 특성에 대한 연구 : 미국과 일본의 RPG를 중심으로)

  • The theme is the core of the work in all media including the games. In order to develop successful games, it must effectively express the game theme. In order to express the game theme, it must be able to understand and to utilize the characteristics of the game theme. This Study extracted 11 characteristics of the game theme through the precedent literature research and found 4 core characteristics of the game theme through interviews with 11 experts. This Study conducted a survey about 4 core characteristics of the game theme in Final Fantasy X of Japan and Skyrim of USA. As a result, degree of an expression about 4 core characteristics of the game theme received high-rated in common(3.45~4.59 / 5). It may become guidelines for the theme studies in the other games. I will contribute to develop successful games through understanding and utilizing the 4 core characteristics of the game theme.

A Comparative Analysis on The Age and Gender of Player Character : Focusing on The USA and Japanese Video Games (미국과 일본 게임의 플레이어 캐릭터 나이와 성별 비교 분석)

  • A player character has a significant influence on immersion. In order to understand the consumers, it is necessary to compare age and gender of player characters, which is the most basic feature of the player character. We selected a prize winning work of 15 years of USA and japanese as research subjects(in RPG and Adventure), classified age and gender of player characters and analyzed the result. In the japanese games, the ratio of pre-set player characters was 94.3% for age and 88.6% for gender. In the USA games, It was the order of the pre-set character which did not specify the age and the customized type character. In this research, we would like to contribute guidelines for player character setting to successfully advance into the USA and Japanese game market.

Effects of Game-based Visual Feedback Training on Postural Balance Control (게임기반의 시각 피드백 훈련이 자세균형 조절에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, we analyzed the effects of game-based visual feedback training on postural balance control in young adults. We provided postural balance training for four weeks in fifth minute a day and three days a week using training system of postural balance based forceplate. We evaluated the ability of postural balance using balance SD(Biodex, medicalscience Inc., USA) for the validation of game contents based visual feedback training program. The results showed that postural stability and limits of stability were improved significantly before and after the training(p<0.05). Our study indicates that postural balance training of visual feedback based game could be adapted for improving postural balance. Also, for application of this game-based visual feedback training in older adults, we could develope of various game contents for disease types and conduct quantitative analysis and data collection of postural balance in the aged.

Effects of Postural Balance at Game-based Visual Feedback Training of the Elderly (고령자의 게임기반 시각피드백 훈련에 따른 자세 균형 효과)

  • In this paper, we analyzed the effects of game-based visual feedback training on postural balance control in young adults and older adults. We provided postural balance training by 23 young adults and 14 older adults and for four weeks in fifth minute a day and three days a week using IBalance(Cybermedic Inc., Korea). We evaluated the ability of postural balance using balance SD(Biodex, medicalscience Inc., USA) for the validation of game contents based on visual feedback training program. The results showed that postural stability and limits of stability of young adults and older adults were improved significantly before and after the training(p<0.05). Thus, the games of postural balance encouraged anterior, posterior, medial, lateral and multidirectional weight shifting regarding postural balance. Our study indicates that postural balance training of visual feedback based game could be adapted for improving postural balance. Moreover, we could develope of game contents for individuals and various ages for effective application of this game-based visual feedback training.

Physical activity convergence contents for health care of the elderly (융합형 노인건강관리 신체활동 콘텐츠)

  • In rapid aging society, the disease prevention and management for healthy life of the elderly is very important. Regular physical activity is known to be a useful intervention for the physical and mental health of the elderly. In this study, we explore the convergence contents using IT technology as the intervention for encouraging the regular physical activity in the elderly. There are u-Healthcare and serious game as the convergence of health care and IT technology, and the serious game which is added special purpose such as education, training, and treatment to the fun-one of the game element- can be suitable to provide a variety of contents that leads to physical activity in the elderly. The contents inducing physical activities are "Puffer(ATARI, USA)", "WiiFit(Nintendo, JAPAN)", "Age Invaders(MXR Lab, SINGAPORE)", "Xbox $360^{\circ}$+kinect(Microsoft, USA)", "Tangible bicycle game(Donsin Univ., KOREA)", and "3D Gateball game(Soongsil Univ., KOREA)", and these contents can help health care of the elderly. By increasing physical activity through the use of these contents, it will be able to promote physical fitness and body function required in daily life, disease prevention, and maintain health in the elderly.

  • The game industry, which is based on high technology, requires specialized personnel. In particular, game graphic design, which occupies the visual area of games, is a fusion of technology and design. In this study, we classify and analyze the curriculum status of US and Korean game - related universities, which is the world 's top game industry. US universities ranked 10 universities in the ranking through official evaluation agencies, and Korea compared 10 universities with relatively well-publicized educational courses through the official homepage. In this analysis, it is necessary to study the curriculum that can complement the creativity and flexibility of game graphic design course by preparing creative subjects for securing professors who have experience in field work and developing various game graphic designs.

  • This study is analytical prototype and usability studies centering on game development for game major in university curriculum by the collaboration of professor and students. The study set up the assumption of successful game development throughout the school curriculum initialized by fifteen weeks of time period. In the previous study, we defined the responsibility of positional personnel, and possibilities of current game majored school from both USA and Korea. The study aimed to analyze the productional guideline for the game development courses by conducting a usability survey from the groups of potential participants.

Comparative Analysis of Global Game Screening Systems (세계 게임 심의제도 비교분석)

  • Almost all of the nations run a game screening system which is characteristic depending on their communication policy. This article attempted comparative analysis about major nation's game screening systems by comparing three main aspects of their communication policy which are freedom of expression, complete opening of the contents to the public, and the balance between protection of adolescent and promotion of industry. It is shown that the screening system of USA, Europe and Japan stick well by the basic principles of communication policy, on the other hand Korea, South Africa Republic and Australia have some points that need improvement.

  • Due to the fast development of information technology, a variety of edutainment software has been used in the field of business education. One of them is Business Simulation Game that the business game domain and the information technology is definitely associated. A lot of business simulation game have been developed and used for many courses of colleges and corporate training in USA and EU. However, education program based on business simulation game has not been activated in Korea. This paper introduce a business simulation game developed by joint effort of business professors and a software firm for last three years and suggest the method of business education using this business simulation game. First of all, the development process, architecture and procedure of business simulation game are summarized. From a perspective of business education, the effect and advantage of business simulation game, sample syllabus, course outlines, users, missions and evaluation method are also addressed.
