제주 월령리 선인장군락지(천연기념물 제429호)의 관속식물상, 분포실태, 관리방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on Vascular Plants, Distribution Status and Management Plans of the Cactus Habitat (No. 429 Natural Monument) in Wolryung-ri, Jeju Island)

  • 제주 선인장군락지는 동아시아 지역에서 식물지리학적으로 특이적인 분포를 보이고 있으며, 국내 유일한 자생지로 특유의 고유경관을 형성하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 자생지 일대의 선인장 분포 현황에 관한 정밀조사가 이루어진 바 없으며, 서식지 내 혼생식물의 다양성 및 선인장 개체군 분포와의 상호 관계에 관한 조사가 이루어진 바 없다. 본 연구는 월령리 선인장군락지 내 관속식물의 다양성을 파악하고 선인장의 분포 실태 및 출현 경향을 기록하고자 하였다. 선인장의 분포 특성과 함께 혼생 식물종 가운데 서식처의 특성을 반영하는 종의 특성과 선인장 개체군의 유지에 위협이 되거나, 선인장 보존에 있어서 관리의 대상이 되는 생물 및 환경 요소에 관하여 논의하고자 한다. 식물상 확인을 위한 현장조사는 2015년 6월부터 2017년 9월까지 식물계절을 고려하여 총 6회에 걸쳐 이루어졌다. 식물에 대한 배열순서와 학명의 기재는 Engler 분류체계에 따라 정리하였으며, 종의 한글명은 한국표준식물목록을 채택하였다. 연구결과 제주 월령리 선인장군락지는 선인장이 우점하는 지역 고유의 특징적인 상관을 형성하고 있었다. 관속식물상은 53과 104속 109종 15변종 1품종으로 총 125분류군을 확인하였다. 환경부 지정 멸종위기식물은 분포하지 않았다. 양치식물은 꼬리고사리, 도깨비쇠고비로 2종이 확인하였으며, 나자식물은 서식하지 않았다. 피자식물이 총 123분류군이 나타났으며, 쌍자엽식물이 91분류군, 단자엽식물이 32분류군으로 밝혀졌다. 선인장 보호지역 내 전체 487개 격자 중 59.3%에 해당하는 289개 격자에서 선인장 분포를 확인하였으며, 5-95%의 다양한 피도분포를 보였다. 미출현 격자의 대부분은 현무암 암반이 노출된 해안지역으로, 반복적인 파도의 영향을 받아 토심이 발달하지 못하거나 극히 제한적인 지역과 인위적 시설물 또는 초지, 관찰로 등이 조성된 지역이었다. 반면 선인장이 70% 이상 높은 우점도를 보이는 구간은 총 71개 격자 지점으로 전체의 14.5%를 차지하고 있었다. 선인장은 보호 지역 내에서 무작위분포를 나타내며, 미소서식처 환경에 적응되어 생육가능입지를 따라 기회주의적으로 분포하고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 군락지 내 선인장은 대부분 단위생식(parthenogenesis)에 의존되어 있음을 고려할 때 현재의 분포는 군락지 내 선인장의 잠재분포가능 영역을 투영하는 결과로 판단된다. 현장조사결과를 바탕으로 보호지역 보존 및 보호를 위한 관리방안을 제안하였다.

A Unique Strategy for Recovering Recombinant Proteins from Molecular Farming: Affinity Couture on Engineered Oilbodies

  • Molecular faming has the potential to provide large amounts of recombinant protein for use in diagnostics and as therapeutics. Various strategies have been developed to enhance the expression level, stability, and native folding of recombinant proteins produced in plants. Few investigations into the subcellular distribution of recombinant proteins within plant cells have been published despite the potential to increase the expression level and impact the purification process. This review article discusses the current strategies used for targeting recombinant proteins to various subcellular locations and the advantages of targeting to seed oil bodies for molecular farming applications. Specifically, the affinity capture of antibodies using recombinant oilbodies is discussed.

Distribution, Characterization, and Diversity of the Endophytic Fungal Communities on Korean Seacoasts Showing Contrasting Geographic Conditions

  • This study analyzed the distribution of endophytic fungi in 3 coastal environments with different climatic, geographical, and geological characteristics: the volcanic islands of Dokdo, the East Sea, and the West Sea of Korea. The isolated fungal endophytes were characterized and analyzed with respect to the characteristics of their host environments. For this purpose, we selected common native coastal halophyte communities from three regions. Molecular identification of the fungal endophytes showed clear differences among the sampling sites and halophyte host species. Isolates were also characterized by growth at specific salinities or pH gradients, with reference to previous geographical, geological, and climate studies. Unlike the East Sea or West Sea isolates, some Dokdo Islands isolates showed endurable traits with growth in high salinity, and many showed growth under extremely alkaline conditions. A smaller proportion of West Sea coast isolates tolerate compared to the East Sea or Dokdo Islands isolates. These results suggest that these unique fungal biota developed through a close interaction between the host halophyte and their environment, even within the same halophyte species. Therefore, this study proposes the application of specific fungal resources for restoring sand dunes and salt-damaged agricultural lands and industrialization of halophytic plants.

평창, 영월(강원도)의 석회암 지역 식물상 (Floristic Study of County Pyeong-chang and Yeong-wol including Limestone Regions (Prov. Gangwon-do) from Korea)

  • 한국의 중부에 위치한 평창, 영월 지역은 석회암 지역이며 생물지리학적으로 매우 중요한 지역이다. 2010년 3월부터 10월까지의 조사로 평창, 영월 지역의 식물상을 밝혀 석회암 지역 식물 연구의 기초자료로 활용하고자 한다. 이 지역의 식물상은 134과 503속 1,010종 11아종 110변종 10품종 4잡종의 1,145분류군으로 확인되었다. 환경부 법적보호인 멸종위기야생식물은 7분류군이며, 한국고유종은 50분류군이었다. 식물구계학적특정식물은 238분류군으로 5등급 24분류군, 4등급 30분류군, 3등급 60분류군, 2등급 45분류군, 1등급 79분류군으로 나타났다. 귀화식물은 82분류군이었으며, 본 조사지에서 다른 지역에 비해 특이하게 분포하는 식물은 53분류군이 확인되었다. 이 중 석회암 지역에서만 분포가 확인되는 식물은 35분류군이며, 격리되어 분포하는 북방계 식물은 15분류군, 해안성 식물은 3분류군이었다.

식생 베타 다양성의 공간화 기법 연구 - Generalized Dissimilarity Model의 국내적용 및 활용 - (Spatializing beta-diversity of vascular plants - Application of Generalized Dissimilarity Model in the Republic of Korea -)

  • For biodiversity conservation, the importance of beta-diversity which is changes in the composition of species according to environmental changes has become emphasized. However, given the systematic investigation of species distribution and the accumulation of large amounts of data in the Republic of Korea(ROK), research on the spatialization of beta-diversity using them is insufficient. Accordingly, this research investigated the applicability of the Generalized Dissimilarity Modeling(GDM) to ROK, which can predict and map the similarity of compositional turnover (beta-diversity) based on environmental variables. A brief overview of the statistical description on using GDM was presented, and a model was fitted using the flora distribution data(410,621points) from the National Ecosystem Survey and various environmental spatial data including climate, soil, topography, and land cover. Procedures and appropriated spatial units required to improve the explanatory power of the model were presented. As a result, it was found that geographical distance, temperature annual range, summer temperature, winter precipitation, and soil factors affect the dissimilarity of the vegetation community composition. In addition, as a result of predicting the similarity of vegetation composition across the nation, and classifying them into 20 and 100 zones, the similarity was high mainly in the central inland area, and tends to decrease toward the mountainous areas, southern coastal regions, and island including Jeju island, which means the composition of the vegetation community is unique and beta diversity is high. In addition, it was identified that the number of common species between zones decreased as the geographic distance between zones increased. It classified the spatial distribution of plant community composition in a quantitative and objective way, but additional research and verification are needed for practical application. It is expected that research on community-level biodiversity modeling in the ROK will be conducted more actively based on this study.

설악산, 지리산, 한라산 산정부의 식생과 경관 특성 (Vegetation and Landscape Characteristics at the Peaks of Mts. Seorak, Jiri and Halla)

  • Vegetation and landscape characteristics at the three highest summits of Republic of Korea, i.e. Seoraksan, Jirisan and Hallasan, are analyzed on the basis of species composition, physiognomy, vegetation distribution and structure of alpine plants, along with landform, geology, soil and habitat conditions. Dominant high mountain plants at three alpine and subalpine belts contain deciduous broadleaved shrub, Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum (31.6%), and evergreen coniferous small tree, Pinus pumila (26.3%) at Seoraksan, deciduous broadleaved tree, Betula ermanii (35.3%), evergreen coniferous tree, Picea jezoensis (23.5%) at Jirisan, and evergreen coniferous tree, Abies koreana (22.6%), deciduous broadleaved shrub, Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum, and Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii (19.4%) at Hallasan, respectively. Presence of diverse landscapes at the peak of Seoraksan, such as shrubland, grassland, dry land along with rocky areas, and open land may be the result of hostile local climate and geology. High proportion of grassland and wetland at the top of Jirisan may related to gneiss-based gentle topography and well developed soil deposits, which are beneficial to keep the moisture content high. Occurrence of grassland, shrubland, dry land, conifer vegetation, and rocky area at the summit of Hallasan may due to higher elevation, unique local climate, as well as volcanic origin geology and soil substrates. Presences of diverse boreal plant species with various physiognomy at alpine and subalpine belts, and wide range of landscapes, including rocky, grassland, shrubland, wetland, and conifer woodland, provide decisive clues to understand the natural history of Korea, and can be employed as an relevant environmental indicator of biodiversity and ecosystem stability.

전라남도 남해안 도서식물상의 도서생물 지리학적 특성 (Island-Biogeographical Characteristics of Insular Flora in Southern Sea of Jeollanamdo, Korea)

  • Present work aims to establish the countermeasure for the better maintenance and preservation of insular floristic diversity at the South Sea of Jeollanamdo Province, ROK, where unique ecosystems are under threat due to climate change, anthropogenic disturbance and habitat destruction. Numerous flora reports from 15 inhabited islands and 60 uninhabited islands as well as field survey data are collated for the compilation of floristic data base and island biogeographical analysis. Out of the 1,940 vascular plant species from 180 families occurring in studies areas, 30.1 percentage or 584 plant species are physiognomically belonging to arboreal plants. Average number of species at individual island is numbered about 222 species, but it varies from about 591 species at the inhabited islands to 129 species at the uninhabited islands. Only 0.15 percentage of species with high proportion above 0.9 in its relative occurrence rate occurs at 68 islands and it includes three species, such as Pinus thunbergii, Eurya japonica and Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum. However, about 68 percentage of plant species occurring in study area is confined their distribution to less than seven islands. Presence of high proportion of notable plants in small islands, i.e., 10 critically endangered species compared with 5.5 species in average, 9 endangered species (average 4.2 spp.) at Sonjookdo, and 7 critically endangered species, 8 endangered species at Sokomundo may due to existence of diverse geological and topographical environmental diversity as well as lower human population density and remoteness from the mainland. Since island is small in size and geographically isolated, minor environmental and ecological burdens can cause the critical damages to the diversity of flora and vegetation, urgent island biogeographical research is needed for the scientific conservation and management of island biodiversity.

경상누층군 자암산의 관속식물상 (Floristic study of Mt. Jaamsan in the Gyeongsang supergroup, Korea)

  • 본 연구는 경상누층군 자암산의 관속식물상을 밝히고 주요 식물에 대해 조사하였다. 2017년 3월부터 10월까지 총 8회에 걸쳐 현지조사를 실시한 결과, 관속식물은 110과 325속 483종 8아종 35변종 2품종 2교잡종으로 총 530분류군이 확인되었다. 자암산은 온대 중부지역에 속하고 침엽수와 낙엽활엽수 혼합림으로 산지의 대부분은 소나무-참나무류가 우점하며, 2차림으로 구성된다. 한반도 고유종은 12분류군, IUCN 평가기준에 따른 적색목록식물은 17분류군, 식물구계학적 특정식물은 65분류군이 관찰되었다. 침입외래식물은 55분류군이며, 귀화율 10.4%, 도시화지수 17.2%로 나타났다. 자암산은 고유종, 희귀종을 포함하여 식물다양성이 높을 뿐만 아니라, 다양한 지형요소들이 주요 경관을 이루고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 조사지 내의 퇴적암벽, 건조한 능선, 계곡, 하천 등의 다양한 환경 요인이 종조성과 분포에 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악되었다. 또한 이 지역의 암석과 토양은 양지식물에 대한 특이적 환경을 제공하는 데 있어 주요한 요인으로 작용하였다.

무제치늪에 자생하는 식물의 뿌리에서 분리한 내생진균의 군집분석 및 다양성 분석 (Community Analysis of Endophytic Fungal strains Isolated from the Roots of Plants Inhabiting Mujechi-neup)

  • 이 논문은 무제치늪에서 채집한 기장대풀(Isachne globosa Kuntze), 솔방울고랭이(Scirpus karuisawensis Makino), 이삭귀개(Utricularia racemosa Wall.), 좀개수염(Eriocaulon decemflorum Maxim.)등 4종의 식물 뿌리에서 서식하는 내생곰팡이의 분포 및 다양성을 확인하기 위해 조사하였다. 총 226 균주가 분리되었고, 3문(Phyla), 7강(Class), 10목(Order), 22과(Family), 31(genera)속으로 분리되었다. 내생진균에서 가장 많이 분리된 속은 Acephala (19.9%), Tolypocladium (16.3%), Neopestalotiopsis (11.5%), Perenniporia (7.1%) 순으로 확인하였다. 다양성지수 분석에 있어서, 이삭귀개(Ur)가 다른 식물 종에 비해 종 풍부도 (Menhinick's index = 2.37), (Margalef's index = 4.46)와, 종 균등도 (Simpson's index diversity = 0.91), 그리고 종 다양성(Shannon's indx = 2.57)로 높게 나왔다. 이러한 분석 결과를 봤을 때, 이삭귀개(Ur)에서 내생진균이 가장 다양하게 서식할 수 있는 것으로 보여진다.

Biochemical Adaptation to the Freezing Environment - the Biology of Fish Antifreeze Proteins

  • Many organisms are known to survive in icy environments. These include both over wintering terrestrial insects and plants as well the marine fish inhabiting high latitudes. The adaptation of these organisms is both a fascinating and important topic in biology. Marine teleosts in particular, can encounter ice-laden seawater that is approximately $1^{\circ}C$ colder than the colligative freezing point of their body fluids. These animals produce a unique group of proteins, the antifreeze proteins (AFPs) or antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) that absorb the ice nuclei and prevent ice crystal growth. Presently, there are at least four different AFP types and one AFGP type that are isolated from a wide variety of fish. Despite their functional similarity, there is no apparent common protein homology or ice-binding motifs among these proteins, except that the surface-surface complementarity between the protein and ice are important for binding. The remarkable diversity of these proteins and their odd phylogenetic distribution would suggest that these proteins might have evolved recently in response to sea level glaciations just 1-2 million years ago in the northern hemisphere and 10-30 million years ago around Antarctica. Winter flounder, Pleuronectes americanus, has been used as a popular model to study the regulation of AFP gene expression. It has a built-in annual cycle of AFP expression controlled negatively by the growth hormone. The signal transduction pathways, transcription factors and promoter elements involved in this process have been studied in our laboratory and these studies will be presented.
