  • UMTS network, evolved from GSM, includes packet core network that consists of SGSNS and GGSNs. Service providers should consider subscriber mobility, location registration, and subscriber distribution when designing packet core networks and network elements. Since one of the major traffic sources for IMT-2000 will be data which has bursty characteristics, new design guidelines for dimensioning of SGSN and GGSN should be proposed under various constraints of system parameters. In this paper, we first evaluate the performance of signaling traffic for packet call subscribers. After that, we also obtain the impact of bursty data traffic on the SGSN and GGSN by simulation, and suggest new dimensioning guidelines for packet core network of UMTS under various environments.

  • The mobile telecommunication system has been growing exponentially after 1990s due to the high population in a city and the growth of mobile user. In this time, the current mobile system mainly concentrates on the voice communication. However, in the next generation, mobile users want to get very diverse services via mobile terminal such as the Internet access, web access, multimedia communication, and etc. For this reason, the next generation system, such as the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication Services) system, has to support the packet data service and it will play the major role in the system. By the way, since the Web service is based on TCP, most of the Internet traffic TCP traffic. Therefore, efficient transmission of TCP traffic will take very important role in the performance of packet data service. There are many researches about improving TCP performance over wireless network. In those schemes, the UMTS system adapts the link layer retransmission scheme. However, there are rarely studies about the exact performance of the link layer retransmission scheme in the face of dynamic changes of wireless environment over the UMTS system. The dynamic changes of wireless environment, such as wireless bandwidth, can degrade TCP performance directly. So, in this paper, we simulate and analyze the TCP performance in the UMTS system with dynamic wireless environments. Then, we propose a simple scheme for minimizing TCP performance degradation. As a result of simulation, we can find that when wireless environment is changed dynamically, the probability of TCP timeout is increased, and the TCP performance is degraded very much. In this situation, the proposed simple scheme shows good performance. It saves wireless resources and reduces the degradation of TCP performance without large overhead of the base station.

  • An ATM/AAL2 is standardized to transmit delay sensitive application services, which has small size packet, efficiently. An AAL2 transmission scheme is used to deliver voice and data traffic on the lob interface between base station (Node-B) and Radio Network Controller (RNC) in UMTS network. To predict AAL2 performance, a detailed end-to-end UMTS network performance simulator was developed. We performed detailed simulation(cell packing density and bandwidth gain) for voice and data services in UTRAN. The results indicate that the maximum bandwidth gain in Node-B is about 17% and the bandwidth gain of AAL2 multiplexing in $I_{ub}$ for data services is less than that for voice service. Futhermore, the more offered load increase the more the bandwidth gain decreases in a concentrator.

  • An AAL2 transmission scheme is used to deliver voice and data traffic between Node-B and RNC on 3G WCDMA network. To predict performance of AAL2 multiplexing precisely, we derived analytically bandwidth gain and cell packing density using discrete-time Markov chain model for voice service and validated these results with simulation. We also performed detailed simulation for AAL2 multiplexing in a concentrator. Based on the analytical result, we propose the engineering guideline to select the optimal Timer_CU in a Node-B. We found that there is no major benefit of additional AAL2 multiplexing in a concentrator and the benefit of AAL2 switching in tub for data services is much less than that for voice service.
