Urea formaldehyde resins are widely used in the manufacturing of wood composite and their usage is always combined with release of formaldehyde characterized to be hazardous to health during and after the manufacturing of the products. This study investigates the effectiveness of wood-based adhesive from oil of pyrolysed Triplochiton scleroxylon sawdust for the production of composite board. The wood-derived Pyrolytic Oil (PyO) was blended with Urea Formaldehyde (UF) resin to formed Pyrolytic Oil-Urea Formaldehyde (PyOUF). The obtained PyOUF called Wood-Based Adhesives at four blends and control (UF) viz; 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1, 1:3 were further employed to prepare the composite board and test for their bonding strength by physical (water absorption-WA and thickness swelling-Th.S) and mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity-MOE, modulus of rupture-MOR, and impact bending-IB). Data obtained was analysed using analysis of variance at α 0.05. The result of analysis of variance conducted on physical properties show significant difference (p≤0.05) between the WA values obtained when testing the different blending proportion of PyOUF and likewise between 2 and 24 h of immersion. PyOUF had significant effect (p≤0.05) on Th. S for 24 h but no significant different (p>0.05) for the 2 h period of soaking. The analysis of variance on mechanical properties of the composite board (MOE, MOR, and IB) show significance differences (p≤0.05) between the strength values obtained when testing the different ratios of PyO with UF. PyO content influenced the properties of the boards and it is evident that PyO can be used in the manufacture of composite board.
This study attempted to measure molecular weight (MW) of melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resins prepared by two different synthesis methods: the one-step MUF resins were synthesized in one batch procedure, while the two-step MUF resins were prepared by a physical mixing of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin with melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin that had been synthesized in a separate procedure. The properties of medium density fiberboard (MDF) panels bonded with two types of MUF resins were also investigated. MWs of these MUF resins were measured using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). In addition, this study measured the MWs of one-step MUF resin during its synthesis procedure. The performance of two types of MUF resins was evaluated by determining properties of MDF panels prepared in laboratory. As the synthesis procedure progressed, both number average MW ($M_n$) and weight average MW ($M_w$) of one-step MUF resin gradually increased, while the polydispersity index (PDI) decreased. And low Mw species of the resin predominantly decreased as the synthesis step progressed. The one-step MUF resin showed greater $M_n$ and $M_w$ than those of the two-step ones even though the PDI values of both resins were very similar each other. As expected, the one-step MUF resin resulted in better properties of MDF panels than those of two-step resins. In particular, the one-step MUF resin provided better internal bond (IB) strength and thickness swelling (TS) with MDF panels than those of two-step ones, indicating better water resistance of the one-step resin. These results suggest that the preparation method of MUF resins have a great impact on the MW and final panel properties.
This work attempted to manufacture glued-laminated timber (Glulam) bonded with melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin adhesives at various melamine contents from 20% to 50% under high frequency (HF) heating for a very short time. Two preparation methods were employed to prepare MUF resin adhesives with different melamine contents: one-batch method of synthesizing MUF resins in a single batch, and two-batch method of mixing urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin with melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin that had been synthesized separately. As the melamine content increased, the gelation time and peak temperature of MUF resins decreased. The adhesion performance of plywood showed that the one-batch MUF resin adhesive with 50% melamine content only satisfied the standard requirement of water resistance. Thus, the one-batch MUF resin adhesive with 50% melamine content was applied for bonding wood lamina from four softwood species such as Japanese larch, Korean red pine, Korean pine and Japanese cedar to manufacture Glulam under HF heating. All Glulam samples bonded with the one-batch MUF resin adhesives with 50% melamine content except those from Korean Red Pine satisfied the requirement in water soaking or boiling water delamination test as an exterior grade Glulam. The presence of rosin in Korean Red Pine was believed to be responsible for its poor adhesion. These results showed that the one-batch MUF resin adhesives with 50% melamine content provided acceptable water resistance with exterior grade Glulam manufactured under HF heating.
Laboratory-scale landfills (simulated landfills) were designed to determine the formaldehyde released into air and leachate from medium density fiberboard (MDF). Simulated landfills were constructed using cylindrical plastic containers containing alternating layers of soil and MDF for a total of five layers. The highest concentration of formaldehyde was found in the air and leachate from the MDF only treatment compared to treatments containing MDF and soil. At the end of the study (28 days), formaldehyde concentrations in air and leachate from treatments containing MDF and soil decreased by 70 percent and 99 percent, respectively, while the treatment containing MDF only still released formaldehyde into the air and leachate. Therefore, waste MDF after storing 4 weeks in water may be recycled as compost or mulch based on formaldehyde leaching. Also, these data indicate soil restricts formaldehyde release into air and leachate and provides new information about the fate of wood-based composite waste containing UF resin disposed in landfills.
The aim of this study is to compare the adaptability of thermoplasticized injectable gutta-percha technique to the canal walls in ribbon-shaped canals. Thirty resin models simulated ribbon-shaped canals were instrumented to #40 using. 06 taper Profile systems. Three groups of 10 resin models were obturated by the lateral condensation technique(LC) and the two thermoplasticized injectable gutta-percha technique; Ultrafil Endoset+Obtura II(EO) and Ultrafil Firmset(UF), respectively.(omitted)
The flame retardancy of plywood should be improved as much as possible while minimizing the impact on the bonding strength of plywood. Six commercial flame retardants and three laboratory synthesized phosphorous nitrogen flame retardants were selected. E0, E1 and E2 grade commercial formaldehyde resins (UF) were applied in this study to evaluate the effect of different flame retardants on the curing time of resin, bonding strength, flame retardant performance, and formaldehyde emission of plywood. The results show that the effect of the addition of different flame retardants on the bonding strength of plywood gradually decreased with the increase of the formaldehyde molar ratio of the resin. The effect of flame retardants on the curing time of UF gradually decreased as the mole ratio of formaldehyde increasing, while the amount of formaldehyde emission varied according to the content of formaldehyde in the flame retardant. Compared with plywood without flame retardant, flame retardant of plywood added with phosphorous nitrogen flame retardant was improved.

In this study, reaction mechanism and curing characteristics of adhesives formulated with NaOH- and $H_2SO_4$-hydrolyzed chicken feather (CF) and formaldehyde-based crosslinkers were investigated by FT-IR and DSC. In addition, adhesive properties and formaldehyde emission of medium-density fiberboards (MDF) applied with the adhesives were measured. CF-based adhesives having a solid content of 40% and over were very viscous at $25^{\circ}C$, but the viscosity reduced to $300{\sim}660m{\cdot}Pa{\cdot}s$ at $50^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the adhesives could be used as a sprayable resin. Through the FT-IR spectra of liquid and cured CF-based adhesives, addition reaction of methylol group and condensation reaction between the functional groups with the use of formaldehyde-based crosslinkers were identified. From the analysis of DSC, it was elucidated for CF-based adhesives to require a higher pressing temperature or longer pressing time comparing to commercial urea-formaldehyde (C-UF) resin. MDF bonded with CF-based adhesives, which was formulated with 5% NaOH-hydrolyzed CF (CF-AK-5%) and PF of formaldehyde to phenol mole ratio of 2.5 (PF-2.5), and pressed for 8 min had higher MOR and IB than those with other CF-based adhesives. MOR and IB of MDF bonded with the CF-based adhesives regardless of formulation type and pressing time were higher than those with C-UF resin. When the values compared with the minimum requirements of KS standard, IB exceeded the KS standard in all formulations and pressing time, but MOR of only MDF bonded with CF-AK-5% and PF-2.5 and pressed for 8 min satisfied the KS standard. What was worse, 24-TS of MDF bonded with all CF-based adhesives did not satisfied the KS standard. However, MOR and 24-TS can be improved by increasing the target density of MDF or the amount of wax emulsion, which is added to improve the water resistance of MDF. Importantly, the use of CF-based adhesives decreased greatly the formaldehyde emission. Based on the results, we reached the conclusion that CF-based adhesives formulated under proper conditions had a potential as a sprayable resin for the production of wood panels.
To reuse the waste bone from restaurants or butcher houses, the possibility of using waste bone powder after cooking as a filler for wood adhesives used in manufacturing plywood was investigated. Radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) plywoods were manufactured by using commonly used wood adhesives such as urea-melamine formaldehyde (UMF) resin, urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin, and phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin and the prepared fillers from cattle bone powder, pig bone powder, and seashell powder. Plywood fabricated by using cattle bone powder, pig bone powder, and seashell powder showed weaker performance in dry and wet glue-joint shear strength and wood failure than those of the plywood with wheat flour. The result showed that it was hard to use only bone powder for the replacement of wheat flour. However, the filler mixed with wheat flour and bone powders showed equivalent dry bonding strength and better water resistance than the wheat flour, indicating that bone powders mixed with wheat flour might be used for the manufacture of plywood. When bone powders were mixed with wheat flour as adhesive fillers the shell powder showed the lowest bonding properties and there was no big difference between the cattle bone powder and the pig bone powder.
This study was to figure out proper Formaldehyde/Urea molar ratio of UF resin with satisfactory bonding strength of plywood and properties of particleboard. The six kinds of UF resins were manufactured with F/U molar ratio 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0. The boards were made of three kinds of raw materials : Veneer, Sliver-Particle and Strand-Particle. Manufacturing condition of plywood : amount of mixing resin was 150g/$m^2$. The fourty secs/mm simple-pressing schedule in the pressure 10kgf/$m^2$ was applied for 480mm${\times}$700mm board at the temperature of $110^{\circ}C$ in a hot press. Manufacturing condition of particleboard : Target density was 0.65g/$cm^2$. The stepwise 9 minutes- multi-pressing schedule in the maximum pressure 40kgf/$cm^2$, the minimum pressure 15kgf/$cm^2$ was applied for $480mm{\times}634mm{\times}12mm$ board at the temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ in a hot press. The results are as follows : I. In bonding strength, plywood which was made by F/U molar ratio 1.2 showed the highest value. Other molar ratio resin also gave the satisfied value of KS standard, 7.5kgf/$cm^2$. 2. In internal bond strength of particleboard, Sliver-Particleboard(SLPB) and Strand-Particleboard(STPB) varied respectively from 5.9kgf/$cm^2$ to 4.8kgf/$cm^2$, from 6.7kgf/$cm^2$ to 5.4kgf/$cm^2$. SLPB with F/U=1.2 and STPB with F/U=1.6 had higher IB value. Also, both SLPB and STPB showed lower IB value in F/U molar ratio 2.0 and 1.0. 3. SLPB and STPB with six kinds of UF resin respectively satisfied bending strength of KS standard 150 Type(130kgf/$cm^2$) and 200 Type(180kgf/$cm^2$). Bending strength data for both of SLPB and STPB showed little or no loss from F/U=1.8 to F/U=1.2. Also, STPB was approximately two times higher than that of SLPB. Therefore, the raw material's shape had more effect on bending strength than the FlU molar ratio. 4. F/U=1.6 and 1.4 showed the lower thickness swelling in SLPB and STPB. All of STPBs satisfied thickness swelling of KS standard, under 12%.
Hollow core wood flush doors for wardrobes, and other general openings and bathroom were designed and fabricated to investigate the factors causing the bowing of them and to find out the countermeasure for the phenomena. Balance in grain orientation, thickness, specific gravity and M.C.(%) of face panel and symmetrical construction were the essential factors to prevent the deflection of flush doors just after manufacturing. Under one-sided severe service condition, the unbalance of M.C. between opposite face panels is inevitable. So the material as thick plywood with high stiffness is considered as an alternative for the stile. UF resin mixing into PVAc emulsion is preferred for bathroom.
