A Typhoon wave is generated by wind fields during the Passage of Typhoon. Transporting wind field makes wind wave and swell in the open sea, and then, those wave components are transported in the shallow water. Typhoon waves in the shallow water is generated by Typhoon wind field and incident wave. Bisides, Incident waves to the shallow water are deformated by topographic conditions. This paper estimated the analysis of the Typhoon waves by wind fields and incident waves according to wave action balance equation model. As the result of wave numerical experiment, wave field during the passage of Typhoon 'Memi' in the shallow water is strongly effect by wind fields. Wave action balance equaion can be partially used for Typhoon wave simulations.

Due to recent increases of typhoon damages primarily owing to heavy rainfall and stron wind, estimation and analysis of a typhoon's influence has become more important. In this perspective, the statistical models to estimate the rainfall rate during a typhoon were presented in this paper. Central pressure of the typhoon is modeled to be the primary parameter affecting typhoon rainfall rate while relative angle and distance between the center of typhoon and the specific location for observation are secondary variables. Comparisons between the estimated rainfall rate of these models and the observed value in the duration of Typhoon NARI(2007) were analyzed to confirm the availability of these models. The result shows that the present statistical models can estimate typhoon-induced rainfall around Korean Peninsular to some extent.
Typhoons were known by contributing to transporting plus heat or kinetic energy from equatorial region to midlatitude region. Due to the strong damage from typhoon, we acknowledged the theoretical study and the importance of accurate forecast about typhoon. In this study, typhoon forecasting system was developed to search the tracks of past typhoons or to display similar track of past typhoon in comparison with the path of current forecasting typhoon. It was programmed using Interactive Data Language(IDL), which was a complete computing environment for the interactive analysis and visualization of data. Typhoon forecasting system was also included satellite image and auxiliary chart. IR, Water Vapor, Visible satellite images helped users analyze an accurate forecast of typhoon. They were further refined the procedures for generating water vapor winds and gave an initial indication of their utility for numerical weather prediction(NWP), in particular for typhoon track forecasting where they could provide important information. They were also available for its utility in typhoon tracer or intensity.

In this study, the cause of rapid intensity change of typhoon Nakri(0208) in view of point of a trough-typhoon interaction using diagnostic methods was examined based on 6-hourly GDAPS data from 10 to 13 July, 2002. At 0000 UTC 13 July, high PV(Potential Vorticity) region moved southeastward, reaching to the western edge of the Korean peninsula and near typhoon center at surface and there shows an increasing value of EFC(Eddy Momentum Flux Convergence). Also, as the trough and typhoon approach one another at the same time, the vertical shear(850-200 hPa) increases to more than 15 m/s. Thus, it might be concluded that the trough-typhoon interaction made intensified significantly, providing the fact that typhoon Nakri(0208) underwent substantial weakening while moving northward to around Jeju island.
The purpose of this study is to provide against to the meteorological disasters in Korea caused by the typhoons by means of the statistical analyses for the relation between the intensities of the typhoons and the meteorological disasters. The data are extracted from the "TYPHOON REPORT OF KOREA" and the "TYPHOON WHITE BOOK" issued by the Central Meteorological Office. The results are summarized as follows : (1) The annual mean frequency and the total number of the typhoon causing the disasters during 30 years (1956∼1985) are 2.2, 65 respectively, and the highest number appears in August followed by September and the third is July. And the degrees of themeteorolgocal disasters are alsio the same order. (2) The more serious disasters occurred by the TS degree typhoons, and the TS degree typhoons occupy the highest frequency. (3) The more serious disasters occurred by the TS degree typhoons, and the TS degree typhoons occupy the highest frequency. (3) The meteorological disaster per typhoon is most severe in August, and the July and September are alike in the degree of the disasters per typhoon. (4) The meteorological disasters are approximately a proportional relation to the intensities of the typhoons. (5) The frequency of the Rain typhoon , Wind typhoon and Rain·Wind typhoon are about 2 : 1: 3 in July, August and September respectively. And the severe disasters occur more frequently by the Rain typhoon than by the Wind typhoon.
Damage from typhoon disaster can be mitigated by grasping and dealing with the damage promptly for the regions in typhoon track. What is this work, a technique to analyzed dangerousness of typhoon should be presupposed. This study estimated 10m level wind speed using 700hPa wind by typhoon, referring to GPS dropwindsonde study of Franklin(2003). For 700hPa wind, 30km resolution data of Regional Data Assimilation Prediction System(RDAPS) were used. For roughness length in estimating wind of 10m level, landuse data of USGS are employed. For 10m level wind speed of Typhoon Rusa in 2002, we sampled AWS point of $7.4\sim30km$ distant from typhoon center and compare them with observational data. The results show that the 10m level wind speed is the estimation of maximum wind speed which can appear in surface by typhoon and it cannot be compared with general hourly observational data. Wind load on domestic buildings relies on probability distributions of extreme wind speed. Hence, calculated 10m level wind speed is useful for estimating the damage structure from typhoon.

This study presents rational methods for probability-based estimates of basic design wind speeds in Korea and develops a risk-bases nation-wide map of design wind speeds. The paper examines the fitting of the Type-I extreme model to maximum yearly non-typhoon wind data from long-term records based on the conventional method and to maximum monthly nod-typhoon wind data from short-term records following Grigorin's approach. The paper also reviews the applicability of the method using short records of about 5 years. The basic design wind speeds for typhoon and non-typhoon wind at a station are made to be obtained from a mixed model which is given as a product of typhoon and non-typhoon extreme wind distributions. A practical method which is based on the fitting of the Type I model to records or typhoon and non-typhoon mixed wind data at a station is also preposed in this study.
The impact of midlatitude synoptic system (upper-level trough) on typhoon intensity change was investigated by analyzing the spatial and temporal characteristics of vertical wind shear (VWS), relative eddy momentum flux convergence (REFC), and potential vorticity (PV). These variables were computed over the radial mean $300{\sim}1,000km$ from the typhoon center by using GDAPS (Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System) data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The selected cases in this study are typhoons Rusa (0215) and Maemi (0314), causing much damage in life and property in Korea. Results show that the threshold value of VWS indicating typhoon intensity change (typhoon to severe tropical storm) is approximately 15 m/s and of REFC ranges 6 to 6.5 $ms^{-1}day^{-1}$ in both cases, respectively. During the period with the intensity of typhoon class, PVs with 3 to 3.5 PVU are present in 360K surface-PV field in the cases. In addition, there is a time-lag of 24 hours between central pressure of typhoon and minimum value of VWS, meaning that the midlatitude upper-level trough interacts with the edge of typhoon with a horizontal distance less than 2,000 km between trough and typhoon. That is, strong midlatitude upper-level divergence above the edge of the typhoon provides a good condition for strengthening the vertical circulation associated with the typhoons. In particular, when the distance between typhoon and midlatitude upper-level trough is less than 1,000 km, the typhoons tend to weaken to STS (Severe Tropical Storm). It might be mentioned that midlatitude synoptic system affects the intensity change of typhoons Rusa (0215) and Maemi (0314) while they moves northward. Thus, these variables are useful for diagnosing the intensity change of typhoon approaching to the Korean peninsula.

This study has analyzed the concentration variation of four air pollutants ($PM_{10}$, $NO_2$, CO, and $SO_2$) during the typhoon periods over 10 years (2002~2011). In this study, 10 typhoon events which had rainfalls in Korean Peninsula were selected during the study period. The analysis was performed using the observation data of both the air pollutants and rainfall. In order to examine and compare the concentrations of the air pollutants between normal periods and typhoon periods, we have obtained monthly average concentrations from July to September and daily average concentrations during typhoon periods. For the period from July to September, 34% of the total rainfalls can be explained by typhoons, and the concentration of air pollutants during the typhoon period was lower than the normal period. In addition, the concentration variations of the pollutants during the typhoon period were analyzed according to two categories: differences in the concentrations between the day before and the day of the typhoon (Case 1) and between the day before and after the typhoon (Case 2). The results indicated that the reduction rate of $PM_{10}$, $NO_2$, CO, and $SO_2$ was 30.1%, 17.9%, 11.6%, 9.7% (Case 1) and 22.8%, 21.0%, 9.0%, 8.0% (Case 2), respectively. This result suggested that air quality was significantly improved during the typhoon period than after the typhoon period by the rainfall.
This study intend to induce citizen's voluntary preliminary disaster prevention activity to reduce damage of typhoon that occurs every year. For this purpose, a survey was conducted to develop Typhoon information contents. The number of samples used in the survey was set to 500 people, and citizens living in Jeju, Busan, and Jeonlanam-do were surveyed for areas with high typhoon disasters in order to develop practical and efficient information. The survey consisted of perception about natural disaster, how to get and use weather information, satisfaction with typhoon information and requirements. The general public perceived the typhoon as the first natural disaster. As a result of responding to the method of obtaining and utilizing weather information, the frequency of collecting weather information at the time of issuance of typhoon special report is higher than usual. The purpose of using weather information is clear and the response rate is high for the purpose of disaster prevention. The medium mainly collecting weather information is Internet portal site and mobile phone besides television. The current satisfaction with typhoon weather information is 34.8%, in addition to the accuracy of prediction, it is necessary to improve the information (that is content) provided. Specific responses to the content were investigated not only for single meteorological factors, but also for possible damage and potential countermeasures in the event of a disaster such as a typhoon. As can be seen from the above results, people are requested to provide information that can be used to detect and cope with disasters. The development of new content using easy accessible media will contribute to the reduction of damages caused by the typhoon that will occur in the future, and also to the disaster prevention activity.
