2차로도로 평균 통행속도-총지체율-교통량 관계 곡선 재정립 (Relationships Between Average Travel Speed, Time-Delayed Rate, and Volume on Two-lane Highways with Simulation Data)

  • PURPOSES : Two-lane highways have one lane in each direction, and lane changing and passing maneuvers take place in the opposing lane depending on the availability of passing sight distance. 2001 Korea Highway Capacity Manual (KHCM) is classified into two classes of two-lane highways (Type I, II), and average travel speed and time-delayed rate are used as measures of effectiveness (MOEs). However, since existing two-lane highways have both uninterrupted and interrupted traffic flow-system elements, a variety of free-flow speeds exhibits in two-lane highways. In addition, it is necessary to check if the linear-relationship between volumes and time-delayed rate is appropriate. Then, this study is to reestablish the relationship between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow. METHODS : TWOPAS model was selected to conduct this study, and the free-flow speeds of passenger cars and the percentage of following vehicles observed in two-lane highways were applied to the model as the input. The revised relationships were developed from the computer simulation. RESULTS : In the revised average travel speed vs. flow relationship, the free-flow speed of 90km/h and 70km/h were added. It shows that the relationship between time delayed-rate and flow appeared to be appropriate with the log-function form and that there was no difference in time-delayed rate between the free flow speeds. In addition to revise the relationships, the speed prediction model and the time-delayed rate prediction model were also developed. CONCLUSIONS : The revised relationships between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow would be useful in estimating the Level of Service(LOS) of a two-lane highway.

한국형 2차선도로 모의실험 프로그램(TWOPAS)의 개발 (Development of Two-lane, Two-way Highway Simulation Program(TWOPAS) for Korean Condition)

  • The two-lane, two-way highway simulation program(TWOPAS) is evaluated for Korean Highway Capacity Manual Study. TWOPAS program input variables, especially related vehicle performance, traffic flow relationship, car-following model and passing logic are examined and modified through the analysis results of our two-lane, two-way highway traffic characteristics. Simulation outputs with and without modification are compared with the field data. The results show that improved TWOPAS program(TWOPAS KI) is well suitable for simulating our two-lane, two-way highway condition.

2차선 유입연결로의 서비스 수준별 가속차선 길이 산정 기준 (Guideline of Acceleration Length by Level of Service for Two Lane Entrance Ramp)

  • The objective of study is to examine relationship between traffic flow characteristics of two lane entrance terminal and acceleration length, and to suggest the acceleration length by level of service. The relationship between the speed ratio and the distance from the ramp appeared to be a quadratic concave from. In the case of two lane entrance ramp, the acceleration length is suggested as 1.4~2.0 times longer than the acceleration length of one lane entrance ramp. It is also recommended that acceleration length for two lane entrance ramp should be designed according to the level of service at the right most lane (level of service A : 1.4 B : 1.6 C : 1.8 D : 2.0 times of the one lane entrance ramp acceleration length) on freeway.

국내 2+1차로 도로 도입에 따른 교통운영 및 경제적 비용 측면의 기대효과 분석 (Evaluation of 2+1 Roads Application to Improve Rural Two-lane Highway in Korea)

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of this paper is to estimate expected effects on traffic operational and economic aspects of 2+1 roads application in Korea. METHODS : Micro simulation study using VISSIM 5.0 was used to analyze the operation efficiency of 2+1 roads compared to two-lane highways and four-lane highways. Some scenarios for various traffic volumes were set up in order to analyze the effect of 2+1 roads under various traffic situations. Also imaginary road networks were set up for each type of roads. The MOEs to measure the operation efficiency were selected with average travel speed and delay. For analyzing economic effect of 2+1 roads, construction cost of a specific imaginary 2+1 road was compared to construction cost of a four-lane highway with same conditions. RESULTS: The results of study show that a 2+1 road is more effective with 19 percents higher average travel speed and 39 percents lower average delay than a two-lane highway. In the economic analysis, construction costs to construct a 2+1 road are saved as approximately 26.4~40.7 percents when compared to construction of four-lane highway. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that 2+1 roads can improve the traffic operational level of service for two-lane highways and 2+1 roads can be applied as an effective design alternative for higher-volume two-lane highways in Korea.

우리나라 양방향 2차선 도로의 용량 및 서비스 수준 체계에 관한 연구 (Determination of Two-Lane Highway Capacity and Level of Service in Korean Rural Roads)

  • Two-Lane, two-way roads account for approximately 92% of total road length in Korea and accomplish the majority of regional transport activities. Nevertheless not too many research have been made on two-lane roads particularly efficiency related topics such as capacity and travel time studies. In this study a full scale data collection was conducted using video equippments on rural two-lane roads to determine capacity Passenger Car Equivalents(PCE) and Level of Service criterion. Various PC programs were utilized to reduce traffic data and Walker ME? and Headway Method were employed to determine PCE's for heavy vehicles. The reseach has shown that capacity and PCE's for two-land two-way roads in Korea are 3200 pcph and 1.1∼1.9 resectively. In addition percent time delay was used as the basis of developing Level of service criterion on two-lane roads in Korea.

  • This paper proposes an effective lane detection algorithm using hugh transform and lane model. The proposed lane detection algorithm includes two major components, i.e., lane marks segmentation and an exact lane extraction using a novel postprocessing technique. The first step is to segment lane marks from background images using HSV color model. Then, a novel postprocessing is used to detect an exact lane using Hugh transform and lane models(linear and curved lane models). The postprocessing consists of three parts, i.e, thinning process, Hugh Transform and filtering process. We divide input image into three regions of interests(ROIs). Based on lane curve function(LCF), we can detect an exact lane from various extracted lane lines. The lane models(linear and curved lane mode]) are used in order to judge whether each lane segment is fit or not in each ROIs. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme is very effective in lane detection.

Cellular Automata 기반 2차로 고속도로 차로변경모형 개발 (Development of Lane-changing Model for Two-Lane Freeway Traffic Based on CA)

  • 차량들의 차량추종과 차로변경에 행태에 의해 차량 교통류는 다양한 형태를 보이게 되며, 차로변경의 행태에 따라 차로이용률은 매우 다양하게 나타난다. 따라서 미시적 차량 모의실험을 이용하여 다양한 교통류를 설명하기 위해서는 차량추종과 더불어 다양한 차로이용 행태를 구현하는 차로변경 모형이 필수적이다. 국내의 경우 차량추종모형에 대한 연구는 보고되고 있으나 차로변경모형에 대한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 대규모 고속도로망 모의실험에 적합한 CA(Cellular Automata)모형을 기반으로 미시적 2차로 차로변경모형을 개발하였다. 개발된 모형을 기존의 CA 차량추종모형과 결합하여 모의실험을 수행한 결과, 다양한 차로이용률 행태를 설명하는 것으로 분석되었다. 개발된 차로변경모형은 보다 다양한 고속도로 교통류의 모의실험에 활용될 것으로 기대된다.

Evaluation of multi-lane transverse reduction factor under random vehicle load

  • This paper presents the two-, three-, and four-lane transverse reduction factor based on FEA method, probability theory, and the recently actual traffic flow data. A total of 72 composite girder bridges with various spans, number of lanes, loading mode, and bridge type are analyzed with time-varying static load FEA method by ANSYS, and the probability models of vehicle load effects at arbitrary-time point are developed. Based on these probability models, in accordance to the principle of the same exceeding probability, the multi-lane transverse reduction factor of these composite girder bridges and the relationship between the multi-lane transverse reduction factor and the span of bridge are determined. Finally, the multi-lane transverse reduction factor obtained is compared with those from AASHTO LRFD, BS5400, JTG D60 or Eurocode. The results show that the vehicle load effect at arbitrary-time point follows lognormal distribution. The two-, three-, and four-lane transverse reduction factors calculated by using FEA method and probability respectively range between 0.781 and 1.027, 0.616 and 0.795, 0.468 and 0.645. Furthermore, a correlation between the FEA and AASHTO LRFD, BS5400, JTG D60 or Eurocode transverse reduction factors is made for composite girder bridges. For the two-, three-, and four-lane bridge cases, the Eurocode code underestimated the FEA transverse reduction factors by 27%, 25% and 13%, respectively. This underestimation is more pronounced in short-span bridges. The AASHTO LRFD, BS5400 and JTG D60 codes overestimated the FEA transverse reduction factors. The FEA results highlight the importance of considering span length in determining the multi-lane transverse reduction factors when designing two-lane or more composite girder bridges. This paper will assist bridge engineers in quantifying the adjustment factors used in analyzing and designing multi-lane composite girder bridges.

오르막차선 설치기준 및 운영방안 평가 (Evaluation of Design Standards and Operation Practice of Climbing Lanes)

  • The objective of study is to evaluate design standards related to the allowable truck speeds, taper length and sign requirements together with the operating practices and economic justification for climbing lanes. Field surveys were carried out on seven climbing lanes, three on two-lane and four on four-lane freeways. Data collected are traffic volume, speed, usage rate and delay. It is found that current design criteria for determining the length of climbing lane, taper lengths, and traffic sign requirements must be upgraded. It is also recommended that regulations on the use of climbing lane be established to make it more effective. Further, economic analysis revealed that the climbing lane is economically justified for two-lane and four-lane freeway if the AADT is over 4,577 and 5,116 vehicles respectively.

이산적 시공간 기반 2차로 도로 차량모형 개발 (Development of Two-lane Highway Vehicle Model Based on Discrete Time and Space)

  • 2차로 양방향 도로의 교통류는 저속차량과 추월 행태에 따라 다양한 동적 관계를 보인다. 따라서 교통류 모의실험을 이용하여 2차로 도로의 다양한 교통류를 미시적으로 분석하기 위해서는 저속차량의 행태와 더불어 대향차로를 이용한 추월 행태를 동시에 구현하는 차량모형의 개발이 필수적이다. 국내의 경우, 고속도로와 신호교차로를 설명하기 위한 차량추종모형과 차로변경모형에 대한 연구는 보고되고 있으나, 2차로 도로를 구현하기 위한 차량모형에 대한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이산적 시 공간 모형인 CA(Cellular Automata)모형을 기반으로 차량추월을 고려한 미시적 2차로 도로 차량모형을 개발하였다. 개발된 모형은 수정된 CA 차량추종모형과 추월모형을 이용하여 병렬적으로 결합된다. 모의실험을 수행한 결과, 차량추종모형은 다양한 거시적 교통류 관계를 설명하였으며, 추월모형은 대향방향 교통류와 차량추월 확률변수의 조건에 따라 다양한 거시적 교통류를 합리적으로 구현하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서 제시된 차량모형은 보다 다양한 2차로 도로교통류의 모의실험에 활용될 것으로 기대된다.
