Laser welding is widely used in the industry for the advantage of small heat affected zone and short weld process time. Conduction limit welding can be used to modify the surface characteristic and it is important to identify the heat affecting area correctly for the improvement of manufacturing accuracy. Since time and length scale associated with laser welding process are extremely small, numerical study can be a useful tool. In this study, two-dimensional axi-symmetric version of energy equation with enthalpy method has been used to analyze the effect of laser input conditions on final shape by the laser welding process. The proposed numerical procedure has been benchmarked with several experimental results and compared well. The modified Marangoni and Peclet number have been introduced using controllable input variables. Simple parametric researches have been performed for high Pr number material. The results show that higher Marangoni number increase fluid mixing, thus generating convex type weld pool. On the other hand, the width of the weld pool is proportional to Peclet number.

The wave interaction with flexible membrane such as PVC and PU fabrics is studied to prove its applicability to portable breakwaters. To analyze the wave deformation due to the flexible membrane. eigen-function expansion method is employed. The fluid domain is seperated into two regions. The velocity potential in each regions and the deformation of membrane are coupled by the body boundary conditions. Herein the deformation of membrane is obtained by solving the membrane equation. As a numerical example, transmission and reflection coefficients according to the change of several design parameters such as tensile force. mooring line stiffness and membrane height are investigated. It is found that the efficiency of flexible membrane breakwater is significantly affected by these design parameters. The angle of incident wave is an important role to the performance of breakwater. Finally we conclude that flexible membrane can be used to engineering material for the future breakwaters.

The heat transfer characteristics of a plasma display panel has been investigated for cooling an electronic module. Hence, a two dimensional $\kappa-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model was developed to predict the temperatures of the panel and module. The heat conduction was solve for the material region. To consider the mixed convection at the solid-fluid interfaces between the air and the panel and module, the energy equation was solved simultaneously. When the electronic module stands face to face with the panel, the temperatures of panel and module are lower than other arrangement due to the chimney effect. However the gap between the panel and module does not affect significantly the maximum temperature when the aspect ratio is less than 0.1. To maintain the maximum temperature of the module under a certain limit, the passage of air should be well designed by the optimal layout of electronic modules which have different heat emission.
The propagation of pump-induced pressure pulsation in a reactor is important because of the potential for vibration and resultant damage of reactor internals. A hydrodynamic model has been developed to obtain the pressure fluctuation due to the operation of pumps in the annulus(between the core support barrel and reactor vessel of a pressurized water reactor) including the coolant inlet pipe. The mathematical analysis is formulated in accordance with the linearized Navier-Stokes equation by assuming a compressible, inviscid flow. Two regions are considered separately and by coupling the solutions of the inlet pipe and the annulus, the inlet nozzle pressure(pressure at pipe and annulus interface) is to be calculated without assumptions. The geometric parameter effect on the pump-induced pressure pulsation is evaluated. Comparison of predicted and measured inlet nozzle pressure values for each forcing frequency shows good order of magnitude agreement.
The present paper deals with the finite element analysis of water tanks with rigid baffle. Fluid is discretized by two dimensional eight-node isoparametric elements and the governing equation is simulated by pressure based formulation to reduce the degrees of freedom in the domain. Both free vibration and force vibration analysis are carried out for different sizes and positions of block at tank bottom. The fundamental frequency depends on block height and it reduces with the increase of block height. The variation of hydrodynamic pressure on tank walls not only depends of the exciting frequency but also on the size and position of rigid block at tank bottom. The hydrodynamic pressure has higher value when the exciting frequency is equal and lower than the fundamental frequency of the water in the tank. Similarly, the hydrodynamic pressure increases with the increase of width of the block for all exciting frequencies when the block is at the centre of tank. The left and right walls of tank have experienced different hydrodynamic pressure when the block is placed at off-centre. However, the increase in hydrodynamic pressure on nearest tank wall becomes insignificant after a certain value of the distance between the wall and the rigid block.

A comprehensive numerical analysis has been carried out for both non-reacting and reacting flows in a scramjet engine combustor with and without a cavity. The theoretical formulation treats the complete conservation equations of chemically reacting flows with finite-rate chemistry of hydrogen-air. Turbulence closure is achieved by means of a k-$\omega$ two-equation model. The governing equations are discretized using a MUSCL-type TVD scheme, and temporally integrated by a second-order accurate implicit scheme. Transverse injection of hydrogen is considered over a broad range of injection pressure. The corresponding equivalence ratio of the overall fuel/air mixture ranges from 0.167 to 0.50. The work features detailed resolution of the flow and flame dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the previous studies. In particular, the oscillatory flow characteristics are captured at a scale sufficient to identify the .underlying physical mechanisms. Much of the flow unsteadiness is related not only to the cavity, but also to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flow-field. The interactions between the unsteady flow and flame evolution may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The roles of the cavity, injection pressure, and heat release in determining the flow dynamics are examined systematically.
In this study, numerical simulations were performed to evaluate the current loads acting on the multi-legged underwater robot "Crabster" with a variety of incident angles using the ANSYS-CFX package. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved to simulate the fluid flow around Crabster to calculate the forces and moments induced by incoming currents with various angles. First, to assess the posture stability of the body, the forces and moments were calculated with various incident angles when the current acted in the vertical and horizontal directions. Next, two forms of legs (box and foil types) were evaluated to determine the hydrodynamic force variation. Finally, the current forces and moments acting on the Crabster body with the legs attached were estimated.

This paper proposes a method to calculate the characteristics of a coupled hydrodynamic journal and thrust bearing of a HDD spindle motor. The governing equations for the journal and thrust bearings are the two dimensional Reynolds equations in ${\theta}z$ and $r\theta$ planes, respectively. Finite element method is appropriately applied to analyze the coupled journal and thrust bearing by satisfying the continuity of mass and pressure at the interface between the journal and thrust bearings. The pressure in a coupled bearing is calculated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition and compared with that by using the Half-Sommerfeld boundary condition. The static characteristics are obtained by integrating the pressure along the fluid film. The flying height of spindle motor is measured to verify the proposed analytical result. This research shows that the proposed method can describe HDB in a HDD system more accurately and realistically than the separate analysis of a journal or thrust bearing.
Unlike land-based nuclear power plants, a marine or floating reactor is affected by external forces due to ocean conditions. These external forces can cause additional accelerations and affect each system and equipment of the marine reactor. Therefore, in designing a marine reactor and evaluating its performance and stability, a thermal hydraulic safety analysis code is necessary to consider the thermal hydrodynamic effects of ship motion. MARS, which is a reactor system analysis code, includes a dynamic motion model that can simulate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena under three-dimensional motion by calculating the body force term included in the momentum equation. In this study, it was verified that the dynamic motion model can simulate fluid motion with reasonable accuracy using conceptual problems. In addition, two modifications were made to the dynamic motion model; first, a user-supplied table to simulate a realistic ship motion was implemented, and second, the flow regime map determination algorithm was improved by calculating the volume inclination information at every time step if the dynamic motion model was activated. With these modifications, MARS could simulate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena under ocean motion more realistically.
The interaction between a sloshing liquid damper (SLD) tank and a rectangular pontoon was investigated under the assumption of the linear potential theory. The eigenfunction expansion method was used not only for the sloshing problem in the SLD tank but also for analyzing the motion responses of a rectangular pontoon in waves. If the frictional damping due to the viscosity of the SLD tank was ignored, the effect of the SLD appeared to be an added mass in the coupled equation of motion. The installation of the SLD tank had a greater effect on the roll motion response than the sway and heave motion of the pontoon. One resonance peak for rolling motion showed up in the case of a frozen liquid in the SLD tank. However, if liquid motion in the SLD tank was allowed, two peaks appeared around the first natural frequency of the fluid in the SLD tank. In particular, the peak value located in the low-frequency region had a relatively large value, and the peak frequency located in the high-frequency region moved into the high-frequency region as the depth of the liquid in the tank increased.
