Ground water flow can be studied with model test. Model test of ground water works are necessary for economic and safe design of the works. Also influence of the ground water flow to the durability and safety of hydraulic structures can be studied with this model. a. Sand model ; Water flow through porous media is the principle of sand model. Darcy's formula is the basic equation, $q=k{\frac{dh}{ds}}^{\circ}. The effect of the ground water flow on the grain system itself is represented with this model only. b. Hele-Shaw model ; In this model use is made of the viscous flow analogy. Viscous fluid such as glycerine flowing through two parallel plates depends on Poiseuille law, $q=-c{\frac{dh}{ds}}$. The analogue can be used vertically and horizontally. c. Heat model ; This is based on the analogy of the Fourier's law for heat conduction and Darcy's law for ground water flow. Especially unsteady problem can be studied with this model. A difficulty of the construction of this model is the isolation, which has to prevent losses of the heat. d. Electirc model ; Ohm's law for electric current is analogous to Darcy's law. Resistance material such as metal foil, graphite block, water with salt added, gelatine with salt added, ete. is connected to electric sources and resistor, and equi-voltage line is detected with galvanometer, $N_aCl$, $CuSo_4$, etc. are used as salt in the model. e. Membrane model ; This model is based on the facts that the deflection of a thin membrane obeys Laplace's equation if there is no load in the direction perpendicular to the membrane, and if the dellection is small.

This study is concerned with the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of guyed towers for wave loadings. In order to analyze the nonlinear responses of guyed towers efficiently, the main tower is modeled as an equivalent stick, the guyline system is idealized as a spring with nonlinear stiffness in the horizontal direction. and the pile foundation system is represented as a linear spring in the rotational direction. The wave forces on the main tower are evaluated by using Morison's equation. In order to consider adequately the nonlinearities of the guying system and drag forces due to fluid viscosity. the analyses are performed in the time domain. The mode superposition method is adopted for solving the nonlinear equation of motion efficiently. which is based on the Newmark integration scheme. Numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the sensitivity of two major design parameters for guyed towers. i.e., the clump weight conditions and the base renditions of the tower.
In a PWR rod cluster control assembly(RCCA) for shutdown is released upon action of control rod drive mechanism and falls down through the guide thimble by its weight. Drop time and impact velocity of the RCCA are two key parameters with respect to reactivity insertion time and the mechanical integrity of fuel assembly. Therefore, the precise control of drop time and impact velocity is prerequisite to modifying the existing design features of the RCCA and guide thimble or newly designing them. During its falling down into the core, the RCCA is retarded by various forces acting on it such as fluid resistance caused by the RCCA movement, buoyance and mechanical friction caused by contacting inner surface of the guide thimble, etc. However, complicated coupling of the various forces makes it difficult to derive an analytical dynamic equation for the drop time and impact velocity. This paper deals with the development of a computer program containing an analytical dynamic equation applicable to the Korean Fuel Assembly(KOFA). The computer program is benchmarked with an available single control rod drop tests. Since the predicted values are in good agreement with the test results, the computer program developed in this paper can be employed to modify the exiting design features of the RCCA and guide thimble and to develope their new design features for advanced nuclear reactors.
The impact of spar-nacelle-blade coupling on edgewise dynamic responses of spar-type floating wind turbines (S-FOWT) is investigated in this paper. Currently, this coupling is not considered explicitly by researchers. First of all, a coupled model of edgewise vibration of the S-FOWT considering the aerodynamic properties of the blade, variable mass and stiffness per unit length, gravity, the interactions among the blades, nacelle, spar and mooring system, the hydrodynamic effects, the restoring moment and the buoyancy force is proposed. The aerodynamic loads are combined of a steady wind (including the wind shear) and turbulence. Each blade is modeled as a cantilever beam vibrating in its fundamental mode. The mooring cables are modeled using an extended quasi-static method. The hydrodynamic effects calculated by using Morison's equation and strip theory consist of added mass, fluid inertia and viscous drag forces. The random sea state is simulated by superimposing a number of linear regular waves. The model shows that the vibration of the blades, nacelle, tower, and spar are coupled in all degrees of freedom and in all inertial, dissipative and elastic components. An uncoupled model of the S-FOWT is then formulated in which the blades and the nacelle are not coupled with the spar vibration. A 5MW S-FOWT is analyzed by using the two proposed models. In the no-wave sea, the coupling is found to contribute to spar responses only. When the wave loading is considered, the coupling is significant for the responses of both the nacelle and the spar.
The effect of modifying the shape of a high-performance EMU train on the aerodynamic drag is studied here using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) based on three dimensional Steady-state Navier-Stokes equation and two equation turbulence modeling. FLUENT 12 and Gambit 2.4.6 are employed for a numerical simulation of the aerodynamic drag of a streamlined-shape train as well as a proto type train. The characteristics of the aerodynamic drag of trains in tunnels are analyzed in a comparison with these characteristics in an open space. The contribution of the aerodynamic drag of each case is also investigated to establish principal pertaining to drag reduction for urban trains in tunnels. The aerodynamic drag of a streamlined train was reduced to 9.8% relative to a proto-type train with a blunt nose and a protruding roof facility and underbody shape: the running resistance is expected to be reduced by as much as 4% at a running speed of 80km/h.
The objective of this study is to provide the quantitative and qualitative computational data about the aerodynamic performance of Gurney flap on NACA 00XX airfoils and to show the optimum Gurney flap height for each airfoil. The test was performed on 7 different airfoils from NACA 0006 to NACA0024, which have a 3% chord(=c) thickness interval. For every NACA 00XX airfoil, Gurney flap heights were changed by 0.5% or 0.25% chord interval from 0 to 2.0%c to study their effects. The aerodynamic characteristics of clean and Gurney flap airfoil were compared, and the influences of Gurney flap on each airfoil were compared. As a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) solver, FLUENT, based on Navier-Stokes code, was used to calculate the flow field around the airfoil. The fully-turbulent results were obtained using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. The test results showed that Gurney flap increased the lift coefficient much more than the drag coefficient over a certain range of the lift coefficient, so the lift-to-drag ratio, which is the important index of airfoil performance, was increased. Based on the test results, the relationship between the airfoil thickness and the optimum Gurney flap heights was suggested.

This paper proposes a method to calculate the characteristics of a coupled hydrodynamic journal and thrust bearing of a HDD spindle motor. The governing equations for the journal and thrust bearings are the two dimensional Reynolds equations in $\theta z$ and $ r\theta$ planes, respectively. Finite element method is appropriately applied to analyze the coupled journal and thrust bearing by satisfying the continuity of mass and pressure at the interface between the journal and thrust bearings. The pressure in a coupled bearing is calculated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition and compared with that by using the Half-Sommerfeld boundary condition. The static characteristics are obtained by integrating the pressure along the fluid film. The flying height of spindle motor is measured to verify the proposed analytical result. This research shows that the proposed method can describe HDB in a HDD system more accurately and realistically than the separate analysis of a journal or thrust bearing.

A finite element model is developed for the numerical simulation of bed elevation change in a curved channel. The SU/PG (Streamline-Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method is used to solve 2D shallow water equations and the BG (Bubnov-Galerkin) method is used for the Exner equation. For the time derivative terms, the Crank-Nicolson scheme is used. The developed model is a decoupled model in a sense that the bed elevation does not change simultaneously with the flow during the computational time step. The total load formula with is used for the sediment transport model. The slip conditions are described along the lateral boundaries. The effects of gravity force due to geometry change and the secondary flows in a curved channel are considered in the model. For the verification, the model is applied to two laboratory experiments. The first is $140^{\circ}$ bended channel data at Delft Hydraulics Laboratory and the second is $140^{\circ}$ bended channel data at Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics of the Delft University of Technology. The finite element grid is constructed with linear quadrilateral elements. It is found that the computed results are in good agreement with measured data, showing a point bar at the inner bank and a pool at the outer bank.

A gerotor is suitable for miniature manufacturing because it has high discharge per 1 cycle and a simple structure, while also being widely used for lubrication oil of engines and as a hydraulic source of automatic transmission. In the automobile industry, improvements in fuel efficiency and noise reduction have recently come to the fore. It has also been necessary to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps for better fuel efficiency through optimal gerotor and port shape design. In this study, to develop an optimal gerotor with a new lobe shape, 2-ellipses-combined, the equation of the lobe shape was derived, and CFD analysis results were compared for 2-ellipses with those of the previous gerotors (3-ellipses and ellipse1-involuteellipse2). A performance test for the oil pump with the optimal rotor (2-ellipses) was carried out and showed good agreement with the results obtained from CFD analysis.

In this study, performance, flow characteristics and noise of a cross-flow-fan system, used in indoor unit of the split-type air conditioner, were predicted by computational simulation. Triangular elements were used to mesh the calculation domain and quadrilateral elements were attached to the blade surfaces and walls to enhance the simulation quality. The unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations were solved using a sliding mesh technique on the interface between rotating fan region and the outside. Two stripes of velocity stream inside the cross-flow-fan were shown - the one was due to the eccentric vortex and the other was due to the normal entrance flow. As the flow rate increased, the center of the eccentric vortex moved toward the inner blade tip and rear-guide, and the exiting flow still had velocity variation along the stabilizer, which can increase the noise level. The acoustic pressure was calculated by using Lowson's equation. From the calculated acoustic pressure, it was found that the trailing edge is a dominant of acoustic generation.
