  • Finger patients can't use their hands because of the paralysis their fingers. Their fingers are recovered by rehabilitating training, and the rehabilitating extent can be judged by measuring the pressing force to be contacted with two fingers(thumb and first finger, thumb and middle finger, thumb and ring finger, thumb and little finger). At present, most hospitals have used a thin plastic-plate for measuring the two-finger grasping force, and we can only judge that they can grasp the plate with their two-finger through it, because the plate can't measure the two-finger grasping force. But, recently, the force measuring system for measuring two-finger grasping force was developed using three-axis force sensor, but it is very expensive, because it has a three-axis force sensor. In this paper, two-finger force measuring system with a one-axis force sensor which can measure two-finger grasping force was developed. The one-axis force sensor was designed and fabricated, and the force measuring device was designed and manufactured using DSP(Digital Signal Processing). Also, the grasping force test of men was performed using the developed two-finger force measuring system, it was confirmed that the grasping forces of men were different according to grasping methods, and the system can be used for measuring two-finger grasping force.

  • Stroke patients can't use their hands because of the paralysis their fingers. Their fingers are recovered by rehabilitating training, and the rehabilitating extent can be judged by measuring the pressing force to be contacted with two fingers (thumb and first finger, thumb and middle finger, thumb and ring finger, thumb and little finger). But, at present, the grasping finger force of two-finger can't be accurately measured, because there is not a proper finger-force measuring system. Therefore, doctors can't correctly judge the rehabilitating extent. So, the finger-force measuring system which can measure the grasping force of two-finger must be developed. In this paper, the finger-force measuring system with a three-axis force sensor which can measure the pressing force was developed. The three-axis force sensor was designed and fabricated, and the force measuring device was designed and manufactured using DSP (Digital Signal Processing). • Some patients can't use their hands because of inherent and acquired paralysis of their fingers. Their fingers can recover with rehabilitative training, and the extent of rehabilitation can be judged by grasping a cylindrical-object with their fingers. At present, the cylindrical-object used in hospitals is only a cylinder which cannot measure grasping force of the fingers. Therefore, doctors must judge the extent of rehabilitation by watching patients' fingers as they grasp the cylinder. A cylindrical-type finger force measuring system which can measure the grasping force of patients' fingers should be developed. This paper looks at the development of a cylindrical-type finger force measuring system with two-axis force/moment sensor which can measure grasping force. The two-axis force/moment sensor was designed and fabricated, and the high-speed force measuring device was designed and manufactured by using DSP (digital signal processing). Also, cylindrical-type finger force measuring system was developed using the developed two-axis force/moment sensor and the high-speed force measuring device, and the grasping force tests of men were performed using the developed system. The tests confirm that the average finger forces of right and left hands for men were about 186N and 172N respectively.

  • A finger exoskeleton actuated by ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) actuators has been developed. In order to evaluate performance of cylindrical grasping of finger exoskeletons, they were equipped with a hand dummy, which is composed of four fingers. The finger dummy has three joints that can be actuated by bending the IPMC actuators. A four finger grasping motion was analyzed using cameras, and cylindrical grasping motion was accomplished within two minutes after applying a 4 volt direct voltage to the IPMC actuators. A pull out test was also performed to evaluate the cylindrical grasping force of the finger exoskeletons actuated by the IPMC actuators. Each finger generated about 2 N of holding force when grasping the cylinder which had a diameter of 50 mm.

  • In this thesis discuss with a flexible robotic finger design and controller which is used for the micro flexible robotic finger. So, miniaturization, precision, controller for the control of grasping force and actuator were needed. And, even if we develop a new actuator and controller, in order to use on real system, we must considerate of a many side problem. In a force control of micro flexible finger for grasping an object, the fingertip's vibration was more important task of accuracy control. And, controller were adopt the PD/PI mixed type fuzzy controller. The controller were consist of two part, one is a PD type fuzzy controller for increase the rising time response, the other is a PI type fuzzy controller for decrease of steady-state error. Especially, in a PD type fuzzy controller, we used only seven rules. And, for a PI controller, we adopt a reset factor for the control of input values. so, we have overcome the exceed of controller's input range. For the estimate of ontroller's utility and usefulness, we have experiment and computer simulation of three cases. First, we consider of unit force grasping control for a task object, which is 0.03N. Second, bounding grasping force control which is add to a sinusoidal force on the unit force. At this cases the task force is (0.03+0.01 sin wt N). And consider of following of rectangular forces.

  • This paper deals with the problem of synthesis of stable and optimal grasps with unknown objects by 3-finger hand. Previous robot grasp research has mainly analyzed with either unknown objects 2-dimensionally by vision sensor or known objects, such as cylindrical objects, 3-dimensionally. As extending the previous work, in this study we propose an algorithm to analyze grasp of unknown objects 3-dimensionally by using vision sensor. This is archived by two steps. The first step is to make a 3-dimensional geometrical model for unknown objects by using stereo matching. The second step is to find the optimal grasping points. In this step, we choose the 3-finger hand which has the characteristic of multi-finger hand and is easy to model. To find the optimal grasping points, genetic algorithm is employed and objective function minimizes the admissible force of finger tip applied to the objects. The algorithm is verified by computer simulation by which optimal grasping points of known objects with different angle are checked.

  • This paper describes the design of a robot's hand with two fingers for stably grasping an unknown object, and the development of a 3-axis force sensor for which is necessary to constructing the robot's fingers. In order to safely grasp an unknown object using the robot's fingers, they should measure the forces in the gripping and in the gravity directions, and control the measured forces. The 3-axis force sensor should be used for accurately measuring the weight of an unknown object in the gravity direction. Thus, in this paper, the robot's hand with two fingers for stably grasping an unknown object is designed, and the 3-axis force sensor is newly modeled and fabricated using several parallel-plate beams.

  • This paper introduces a tactilely transparent soft glove composed of soft materials and flexible structures. Although it is hard to achieve a high grasping force with conventional grip-assist gloves made from soft material, the proposed glove can exert a high force by using a novel structure. This structure has a triangular shape composed of flexible structural frames, soft fabric, and belts. It can produce grip-assist moment compliantly without harmful force or misalignment with the human fingers. The whole finger part that comes into contact with objects is made of thin and soft fabric in order to facilitate sensation transference. The proposed tactilely transparent soft glove enables the user to manipulate various objects owing to both the softness and high grasping force; it helps lifting heavy weight objects as well as permitting delicate tactile feeling on the palm and fingers. The proposed concept was applied to a two-finger grip-assist device for validation. In addition, the experimental results regarding grasping objects, fingertip force, and grasping force are presented.

  • This paper is a study on the fuzzy force control of a miniature gripper driven by piezoelectric bimorph actuator. The system is composed of two flexible cantilevers, a stepping motor, a laser displacement transducer and two semiconductor force sensors attached to the beams. Obtained results show that the present artificial finger system works well as a miniature gripper, which produces approximately 0.06N force in the maximum. Further, the fuzzy position/force control algorithm is applied to the soft-handing gripper for stable grasping of a object. It revealed that the fuzzy rule-based controller be efficient controller for the stable drive of the flexible miniature gripper. It also showed that two semiconductor strain gauges located in the flexible beam play an important roles for force control, position control and vibration suppression control.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach to design and control a smart gripper of robot system. A control method for flexible grasping a object in partially unknown environment was proposed, where a proximate sensor detecting the distance between the fingertip and object was used. Based on the proximate sensor signal the finger motion controller could plan the grasping process divided in three phases. The first step is scanning process which two first joints were moved to mid-position of the detected range by a state-variable feedback position controller, after the scanning was finished. The contact force of fingertip was then controlled using the detection sensor of the servo controller for finger joint control. The proposed grasping planning was tested on rectangular bar.
