  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of methods of establishing the midsagittal reference plane (MRP) on the locations of midfacial landmarks in the three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) analysis of facial asymmetry. Materials and Methods: A total of 24 patients (12 male and 12 female; mean age, 22.5 years; age range, 18.2-29.7 years) with facial asymmetry were included in this study. The MRP was established using two different methods on each patient's CT image. The x-coordinates of four midfacial landmarks (the menton, nasion, upper incisor, and lower incisor) were obtained by measuring the distance and direction of the landmarks from the MRP, and the two methods were compared statistically. The direction of deviation and the severity of asymmetry found using each method were also compared. Results: The x-coordinates of the four anatomic landmarks all showed a statistically significant difference between the two methods of establishing the MRP. For the nasion and lower incisor, six patients (25.0%) showed a change in the direction of deviation. The severity of asymmetry also changed in 16 patients (66.7%). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the locations of midfacial landmarks change significantly according to the method used to establish the MRP.

  • There are several methods for the design of 2D filter. Notable among them is McClellan transform method. This transform allows us to obtain a high order 2D FIR filter through mapping the 1D frequency points of a 1D prototype FIR filter onto 2D frequency contours. We design 2D filter using this transform. Then we notice for mapping deviation of the 2D filter. In this paper, Quadratic programming (QP) method allows us to obtain coefficients of McClellan transform. Then we compare deviation of QP method with least-squares(LS) method. Elliptic filter is used for comparison. The optimal cutoff frequencies of a 1D filter are obtained directly from the QP method. Also several problem of LS method are solved.

  • This paper presents the effects of free-stream turbulence on streamwise surface pressure fluctuations on two-dimensional rectangular cylinders. Particular attention is given to possible effects of turbulence integral scale on fluctuation and peak pressures. The mean, standard deviation, peak pressure coefficients, spectra and cross-correlation of fluctuating pressures were measured to investigate the nature of the separation and reattachment phenomenon in turbulent flows over a wide range of turbulence intensity and integral scale.

  • Joint roughness is combination of primary and secondary roughness. Ordinarily primary roughness is a geostatistical part of a joint surface that has a periodic nature but secondary roughness or unevenness is a statistical part of that which have a random nature. Using roughness generating algorithms is a useful method for evaluation of joint roughness. In this paper after determining geostatistical parameters of the joint profile, were presented two roughness generating algorithms using Mount-Carlo method for evaluation of primary (GJRGAP) and secondary (GJRGAS) roughness. These based on geostatistical parameters (range and sill) and statistical parameters (standard deviation of asperities height, SDH, and standard deviation of asperities angle, SDA) for generation two-dimensional joint roughness profiles. In this study different geostatistical regions were defined depending on the range and SDH. As SDH increases, the height of the generated asperities increases and asperities become sharper and at a specific range (a specific curve) relation between SDH and SDA is linear. As the range in GJRGAP becomes larger (the base of the asperities) the shape of asperities becomes flatter. The results illustrate that joint profiles have larger SDA with increase of SDH and decrease of range. Consequencely increase of SDA leads to joint roughness parameters such Z2, Z3 and RP increases. The results showed that secondary roughness or unevenness has a great influence on roughness values. In general, it can be concluded that the shape and size of asperities are appropriate parameters to approach the field scale from the laboratory scale.

  • Severe downslope windstorms observed at Gangneung, Korea in the springtime during the last 30 years are studied to understand their generation mechanisms. 92 severe wind cases are selected for which the maximum instantaneous wind speeds exceed two standard deviation of total mean plus ($18.7ms^{-1}$). They are categorized into the three mechanisms (hydraulic jump, partial reflection, and critical-level reflection) proposed in previous studies based on the flow condition, which is calculated using the wind and temperature profile observed at one upstream rawinsonde station, Osan. Among the three, partial reflection is found to be the most frequent mechanism for the last 30 years (1976 - 2005). To understand the role of inversion in generating severe downslope windstorms, horizontal velocity perturbation was calculated analytically for the atmosphere with an inversion layer. It turned out that the intensity of downslope wind was increased by inversion layer of specific heights, which are well matched with the observations. For better understanding the generation mechanisms, two-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted for the 92 severe wind cases using the ARPS model. In most simulations, surface wind speed exceeds the value of the severe-wind criterion, and each simulated case can be explained by its own generation mechanism. However, in most simulations, the simulated surface wind speed is larger than the observed, due to ignoring the flow-splitting effect in the two-dimensional framework.

  • This paper introduces a method to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) microstructure of two-phase materials, e.g., porous materials such as highly irradiated nuclear fuel, from two-dimensional (2D) sections via a multi-objective optimization genetic algorithm. The optimization is based on the comparison between the reference and reconstructed 2D sections on specific target properties, i.e., 2D pore number, and mean value and standard deviation of the pore-size distribution. This represents a multi-objective fitness function subject to weaker hypotheses compared to state-of-the-art methods based on n-points correlations, allowing for a broader range of application. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on synthetic data and compared with state-of-the-art methods adopting a fitness based on 2D correlations. The method here developed can be used as a cost-effective tool to reconstruct the pore structure in highly irradiated materials using 2D experimental data.

  • Purpose: This study has been conducted to develop a potato yield monitoring system, consisting of a segmentation algorithm to detect potatoes scattered on a soil surface and a counting system to count the number of potatoes and convert the data from two-dimensional images to masses. Methods: First, a segmentation algorithm was developed using top-hat filtering and processing a series of images, and its performance was evaluated in a stationary condition. Second, a counting system was developed to count the number of potatoes in a moving condition and calculate the mass of each using a mass estimation equation, where the volume of a potato was obtained from its two-dimensional image, and the potato density and a correction factor were obtained experimentally. Experiments were conducted to segment potatoes on a soil surface for different potato sizes. The counting system was tested 10 times for 20 randomly selected potatoes in a simulated field condition. Furthermore, the estimated total mass of the potatoes was compared with their actual mass. Results: For a $640{\times}480$ image size, it took 0.04 s for the segmentation algorithm to process one frame. The root mean squared deviation (RMSD) and average percentage error for the measured mass of potatoes using this counting system were 12.65 g and 7.13%, respectively, when the camera was stationary. The system performance while moving was the best in L1 (0.313 m/s), where the RMSD and percentage error were 6.92 g and 7.79%, respectively. For 20 newly prepared potatoes and 10 replication measurements, the counting system exhibited a percentage error in the mass estimation ranging from 10.17-13.24%. Conclusions: At a travel speed of 0.313 m/s, the average percentage error and standard deviation of the mass measurement using the counting system were 12.03% and 1.04%, respectively.
