In this paper, the vibration of a rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk is considered. It is assumed that the shaft has uniform, circular cross-section. Based on the Timoshenko-beam theory, the transverse displacements and slops in two lateral directions, the axial displacement, and the torsional deformation are considered. A spectral element model is developed by using the variation method for the vibration analysis of the rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk, which is modeled by two shaft elements and a thin rigid disk element. The result of vibration analysis by finite element method is compared to the result of this research.
In this paper, a numerical investigation of three-dimensional, two-phase flow field around a butterfly valve is conducted. The butterfly valves that have different opening angles, $10^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$, and two profiles of the shaft boss are compared with various cavitation numbers and Reynolds numbers. This paper focused on the flow analysis in the original butterfly valve and new design butterfly valve in order to decrease cavitation and loss. It is found that the butterfly valve with a cone-type shaft boss greatly reduces the cavitation and loss, compared to the original shaft boss by 20${\sim}$30%.
Rubbing occurs when a rotating element comes in contact with a stationary element. In the steam turbines, the rotating element is the rotor while the stationary elements are usually the oil deflectors and packing seals. Rubbing phenomenon may be often obseued on a new or rebuilt machine rather than on a machine that has been operating for several months or years. Rubbing in the turbine has been classified into two modes by the operating conditions: 1) start up or shut down, 2) steady state. At start up or shut down operation, rubbing produces synchronous whirl vibration, which are caused by thermal bow of the shaft due to localized heating on the shaft surface. While subsynchronous whirl vibration is caused by partial rubbing during the steady state operation. In this paper, the two case studies of troubleshooting for excessive vibration caused by rubbing in the actual steam turbines are investigated.
In this paper, the vibration of a rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk on bearing supports is considered. It is assumed that the shaft has uniform, circular cross-section. Based on the Timoshenko-beam theory, the transverse displacements and slops in two lateral directions, the axial displacement, and the torsional deformation are considered. And flexible supports are used to analyse the bearings. A spectral element model is developed for the vibration analysis of the rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk, which is modeled by two shaft elements and a thin rigid disk element. The result of vibration analysis by finite element method is compared to the result of this research.
Micro gas turbines are designed with low turbine inlet temperature and pressure ratio. To overcome the efficiency defect of the simple cycle, adoption of the recuperator is an inevitable choice. In addition to the design performance, we should also pay attention to the off-design performance of gas turbines since they usually operate at part-load conditions for a considerable amount of the time. This study aims at analyzing off-design performance characteristics of micro gas turbines and addressing the importance of the recuperator in the part load operation. Comparative analyses have been performed to evaluate the part load performance differences among various design and operating options : simple vs recuperative cycles, single vs two shaft configurations, various operating strategies for the single shaft configuration (fuel only control, variable speed operation, variable inlet guide vane control), and current vs advanced engines. Major finding is that maintaining turbine at high level is crucial in efficient operation of micro gas turbines.

Non-Traditional Optimization methods are successfully used in solving many engineering problems. Shaft is one of important element of machines and it is used to transmit power from a machine which produces power to a machine which absorbs power. In this paper, ten non-traditional optimization methods that are ALO, GWO, DA, FPA, FA, WOA, CSO, PSO, BA and GSA are used to find minimum weight of hollow shaft to get global optimal solution. The problem has two design variables and two inequality constraints. The comparative results show that the Particle Swarm Optimization outperforms other methods and the results are validated using ANSYS.
In this paper, a hybrid sensor is proposed that has two capabilities: the first is to sense longitudinal or flexural transient vibration signals selectively which are transmitted along the target shaft, and the second to measure the rotating speed of the shaft. All measurements are made in a non-contact manner since this sensor uses magnetostriction as its measuring principle. The signal selection between two vibration modes requires only electrical switching operations and the switching between these two sensing capabilities-vibrations and rotational speed-are accomplished by a very simple mechanical operation. To verify the capabilities of the proposed sensor, a prototype sensor is fabricated and the experiments are made. The results show this sensor can embody two sensing capabilities in one sensor configuration.
Pile load tests using Osterberg cells (O-cell) were conducted on cast-in-place concrete piles founded in oil sand fill and in situ oil sand at an industrial plant site in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Interpreted pile test results show that very high pile shaft resistance (with the Bjerrum-Burland or Beta coefficient of 2.5-4.5) against oil sand could be mobilized at small relative displacements of 2-3% of shaft diameter. Finite element simulations based on linear elastic and elasto-plastic models for oil sand materials were used to analyze the pile load test measurements. Two constitutive models yield comparable top-down load versus pile head displacement curves, but very different behaviour in mobilization of pile shaft and end bearing resistances. The elasto-plastic model produces more consistent matching in both pile shaft and end bearing resistances whereas the linear elastic under- and over-predicts the shaft and end bearing resistances, respectively. The mobilization of high shaft resistance in oil sand under pile load is attributed to the very dense and interlocked structure of oil sand which results in high matrix stiffness, high friction angle, and high shear dilation.
Vibration in Engine module could be reduced by introducing a balance shaft module which has one or more unbalanced rotors. The unbalanced rotor is unbalanced in one direction that act as a opposite direction of the inertia force or moment triggered by engine component so that the largest order factor in vibration is efficiently decreased The ability of balance shaft to reduce the order element of engine component is investigated by a vehicle testing that is focused on comparing the vibration with balance shaft to that of without balance shaft. One of the commonly adapted balance shaft is tested by modal scheme for indemnifying the dynamic characteristics and an, the modal information is used for a clue to design the balance shaft module. The essential equation deriving the design parameters of unbalanced rotor is also presented for two cases, 3 in-ling and 4 in-ling cylinder model. Finally, the overall design process is explained with flow chart.
This study focus on shaft box facade, special form of box window construction. It consists of a system of box window with continuous vertical shafts that extend over a number of stories to create a stack effect. The subject building was decided by analyzing various types of exiting apartments. Shaft box type balcony was devised by setting up shaft space at a part of balcony. Air flow and indoor air temperature were simulated, performance of shaft box type balcony was compared with existing types using VE computer simulation program. Research consequence can be summarized as follow: 1) In the case of existing types, the change of window opening rate has only a little effect on the improvement of indoor temperature. But, air flow rate increased two times in the case that changed opening rate 20% to 40% 2) In the case of existing types, the growth of air flow rate has little effect on the improvement of indoor temperature. But, shaft box type represented the remarkable effect on the improvement of indoor temperature as well as the growth of air flow rate.
