  • In this paper, the two sample locally optimum rank detector is obtained in the weakly dependent noise with non-zero temporal correlation between noise observations. The test statistic of the locally optimum rank detector is derived from the Neyman-Pearson lemma suitable for the two sample observation models, where it is assumed that reference observations are available in addition to regular observations. Two-sample locally optimum rank detecter shows the same performance with the one-sample locally optimum rank detector asymptotically. The structure of the two-sample rank detector is simpler than that of the one-sample rank detector because the sign statistic is not processed separately.

  • This research examines the power of bootstrap two-sample test, and compares it with the powers of two-sample t-test and Wilcoxon rank sum test, through simulation. For simulation work, a positively skewed and heavy tailed distribution was selected as a population distribution, the chi-square distributions with three degrees of freedom, χ23. For two independent samples, the fist sample was selected from χ23. The second sample was selected independently from the same χ23 as the first sample, and calculated d+ax for each sampled value x, a randomly selected value from χ23. The d in d+ax has from 0 to 5 by 0.5 interval, and the a has from 1.0 to 1.5 by 0.1 interval. The powers of three methods were evaluated for the sample sizes 10,20,30,40,50. The null hypothesis was the two population medians being equal for Bootstrap two-sample test and Wilcoxon rank sum test, and the two population means being equal for the two-sample t-test. The powers were obtained using r program language; wilcox.test() in r base package for Wilcoxon rank sum test, t.test() in r base package for the two-sample t-test, boot.two.bca() in r wBoot pacakge for the bootstrap two-sample test. Simulation results show that the power of Wilcoxon rank sum test is the best for all 330 (n,a,d) combinations and the power of two-sample t-test comes next, and the power of bootstrap two-sample comes last. As the results, it can be recommended to use the classic inference methods if there are widely accepted and used methods, in terms of time, costs, sometimes power.

  • The two-sample locally optimum rank detection scheme is obtained which uses rank and sign statistics for detection of random signals in additive noise. It is shown that the detector is similar in structure to the locally optimum detector for random signals and to the one-sample locally optimum rank detector for random signals. It is also shown that the detector is a generalization of the two-sample locally optimum rank detector for known signals. In addition , the problem of two-sample locally optimum rank detection of random signals in multiple input case is considered briefly.

  • The effects of the reference sample size on the detection probability of the two-sample rank detector is investigated in this paper. The larger reference sample size shows the better performance of the detector. The effect is also shown to be saturated as the reference sample size becomes larger.

  • The asymptotic performance of the two-sample locally optimum rank detector for random signals buried in signal-dependent noise and additive noise is consigered in this paper. It is shown that the locally optimum rank detector, a nonparametric detector, has reasonable asymptotic performance for a class of correlated random signals, compared with the locally optimum detector. It is noteworthy that the the two-sample locally optimum rank detector perform almost the same with the one-sample locally optimum rank detector.

  • We consider a two sample rank test for a bivariate mixture distribution based on Johnson's quantile score. The test statistic is simple to calculate and the exact distribution under the null hypothesis is obtained. A numerical example is given.

  • In this paper we propose Wilcoxon test, Median test and Van der Waerden test such as linear rank tests in two-sample location problem for detecting edges effectively in noisy images. These methods are based on detecting image intensity changes between two pixel neighborhoods using an edge-height model to perform effectively on noisy images. The neighborhood size used here is small and its shape is varied adaptively according to edge orientations. We compare and analysis the performance of these statistical edge detectors on both natural images and synthetic images with and without noise.

  • Some rank score tests are proposed for testing the equality of all sampling distribution functions against ordered location-scale alternatives in k-sample problem. Under the null hypothesis and a contiguous sequence of ordered location-scale alternatives, the asymptotic properties of the proposed test statistics are investigated. Also, the asymptotic local powers are compared with each others. The results show that the proposed tests based on the Hettmansperger-Norton type statistic are more powerful than others for the general ordered location-scale alternatives. However, the Shiraishi's tests based on the sum of two Bartholomew's rank analogue statistics are robust.

  • For testing homogeneity of scale parameters aginst ordered alternatives, some nonparametric test statistics based on pairwise ranking method are proposed. The proposed tests are distribution-free. The asymptotic distributions of the proposed statistcs are also investigated. It is shown that the Pitman efficiencies of the proposed rank tests are the same as those of the corresponding two-sample rank tests in the scale problem. A small-sample Monte Carlo study is also performed. The results show that the proposed tests are robust and efficient.

  • This paper elucidates the limiting Gaussian distribution of a class of rank order statistics {$T_N$} for two sample problem pertaining to empirical processes of the squared residuals from two independent samples of GARCH processes. A distinctive feature is that, unlike the residuals of ARMA processes, the asymptotics of {$T_N$} depend on those of GARCH volatility estimators. Based on the asymptotics of {$T_N$}, we empirically assess the relative asymptotic efficiency and effect of the GARCH specification for some GARCH residual distributions. In contrast with the independent, identically distributed or ARMA settings, these studies illuminate some interesting features of GARCH residuals.
