The experiments were performed with a $31{\times}31{\times}7mm^3$ simulated 3-dimensional module on the thermal conductive board of a parallel plate channel. The convective thermal conductance for the path from the module surface directly to airflow and conjugate thermal conductance for the path leading from the module to the floor by way of a module support, then, to the airflow were determined with several combinations of module-support-construction(210, 0.32, 0.021 K/W)/floor-material(398, 0.236W/mK) and channel height(15-30mm). As the result, it was found that the conjugate thermal conductance and the temperature distribution around the module depend on the thermal resistance of the module support, and the channel height. These configurations were designed to investigate on the feasibility of using the substrate as an effective heat spreader in the forced convective air-cooling of surface mounted heat source. The experimental results were discussed in the light of interactive nature of heat transfer through two paths, one directed from the module to the airflow and the other via the module support and the floor to the air.
Numerical and experimental investigations are peformed for the rarefied gas flows in pumping channels of a helical-type drag pump. Modern turbomolecular pumps include a drag stage in the discharge side, operating roughly in $10^{-2}{\sim}10Torr$. The flow occurring in the pumping channel develops from the molecular transition to slip flow traveling downstream. Two different numerical methods are used in this analysis: the first one is a continuum approach in solving the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions, and the second one is a stochastic particle approach through the use of the direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method. The flow in a pumping channel is three-dimensional(3D), and the main difficulty in modeling a 3D case comes from the rotating frame of reference. Thus, trajectories of particles are no longer straight lines. In the Present DSMC method, trajectories of particles are calculated by integrating a system of differential equations including the Coriolis and centrifugal forces. Our study is the first instance to analyze the rarefied gas flows in rotating frame in the presence of noninertial effects.

In this paper, we present a compact model of gate-voltage-dependent quantum effects in short-channel surrounding-gate (SG) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). We based the model on a two-dimensional (2-D) analytical solution of Poisson's equation using cylindrical coordinates. We used the model to investigate the electrostatic potential and current sensitivities of various gate lengths ($L_g$) and radii (R). Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger's equation was solved analytically for a one-dimensional (1-D) quantum well to include quantum effects in the model. The model takes into account quantum effects in the inversion region of the SG MOSFET using a triangular well. We show that the new model is in excellent agreement with the device simulation results in all regions of operation.
Group method of data handling (GMDH) is considered one of the earliest deep learning methods. Deep learning gained additional interest in today's applications due to its capability to handle complex and high dimensional problems. In this study, multi-layer GMDH networks are used to perform uncertainty quantification (UQ) and sensitivity analysis (SA) of nuclear reactor simulations. GMDH is utilized as a surrogate/metamodel to replace high fidelity computer models with cheap-to-evaluate surrogate models, which facilitate UQ and SA tasks (e.g. variance decomposition, uncertainty propagation, etc.). GMDH performance is validated through two UQ applications in reactor simulations: (1) low dimensional input space (two-phase flow in a reactor channel), and (2) high dimensional space (8-group homogenized cross-sections). In both applications, GMDH networks show very good performance with small mean absolute and squared errors as well as high accuracy in capturing the target variance. GMDH is utilized afterward to perform UQ tasks such as variance decomposition through Sobol indices, and GMDH-based uncertainty propagation with large number of samples. GMDH performance is also compared to other surrogates including Gaussian processes and polynomial chaos expansions. The comparison shows that GMDH has competitive performance with the other methods for the low dimensional problem, and reliable performance for the high dimensional problem.
When a molten corium is relocated in a lower head of a reactor vessel, the ERVC (External Reactor Vessel Cooling) system is actuated as coolant is supplied into a reactor cavity to remove a decay heat from the molten corium during a severe accident. To achieve this severe accident mitigation strategy, the two-phase natural circulation flow in the annular gap between the external reactor vessel and the insulation should be formed sufficiently by designing the coolant inlet/outlet area and gap size adequately on the insulation device. For this reason, one-dimensional natural circulation flow tests were conducted to estimate the natural circulation flow under the ERVC condition of APR1400. The experimental facility is one-dimensional and scaled-down as the half height and 1/238 rectangular channel area of the APR1400 reactor vessel. As the water inlet area increased, the natural circulation mass flow rate asymptotically increased, that is, it converged at a specific value. And the circulation mass flow rate also increased as the outlet area, injected air flow rate, and outlet height increased. But the circulation mass flow rate was not changed along with the external water level variation if the water level was higher than the outlet height.
A two-dimensional particle-in-cell(PIC) simulation with a Monte-Carlo Collision(MCC) has been developed to investigate the discharge characteristics of the acceleration channel of a HET. The dynamics of electrons and ions are treated with PIC method at the time scale of electrons in order to investigate the particle transport. The densities of charged particles are coupled with Poisson's equation. Xenon neutrals are injected from the anode and experience elastic, excitation, and ionization collisions with electrons, and are scattered by ions. These collisions are simulated by using an MCC model. The effects of control parameters such as magnetic field profile, electron current density, and the applied voltage have been investigated. The secondary electron emission on the dielectric surface is also considered.
Electrical characteristics of LDMOS power device with LDD(Lightly Doped Drain) structure is studied with variation of the region of channel and LDD. The channel in LDMOSFET encloses a junction-type source and is believed to be an important parameter for determining the circuit operation of CMOS inverter. Two-dimensional TCAD MEDICI simulation is used to study hot-carrier effect, on-resistance Ron, breakdown voltage, and transient switching characteristic. The voltage-transfer characteristics and on-off switching properties are studied as a function of the channel length and doping levels. The digital logic levels of the output and input voltages are analyzed from the transfer curves and circuit operation. Study indicates that drain current significantly depends on the channel length rather than the LDD region, while the switching transient time is almost independent of the channel length. The high and low logic levels of the input voltage showed a strong dependency on the channel length, while the lateral substrate resistance from a latch-up path in the CMOS inverter was comparable to that of a typical CMOS inverter with a guard ring.
