  • A preliminary performance test of a 30RT 2-stage screw heat pump was carried out in order to develop a high performance large-scale unutilized energy source heat pump, which will be used in district heating and cooling. Two issues on the system control were investigated in this study, A stable 2-stage heating operation is guaranteed only if the load-side water inlet temperature is over a certain value, to where the 1-stage heating operation should be done first from a cold start. An oil shortage problem in low stage compressor, which depends on the degree of suction superheat, was solved by the proper oil level control scheme.

  • The natural gas dehydration process plays a central role in liquefying LNG. This study proposes two natural gas dehydration process systems applicable to liquefied natural gas (LNG) liquefaction plants, and compares and analyzes energy optimization measures through simulation. The fuel gas from feed stream (FFF) case, which requires additional equipment for gas circulation, disadvantages are design capacity and increased energy. On the other hand, the end flash gas (EFG) case has advantages such as low initial investment costs and no need for compressors, but has downsides such as increased power energy and the use of gas with different components. According to the process simulation results, the required energy is 33.22 MW for the FFF case and 32.86 MW for the EFG case, confirming 1.1% energy savings per unit time in the EFG case. Therefore, in terms of design pressure, capacity, device configuration, and required energy, the EFG case is relatively advantageous. However, further research is needed on the impact of changes in the composition of regenerated gas on the liquefaction process and the fuel gas system.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the cooling performance characteristics of a hybrid refrigeration system in a heavy duty vehicle. The tested hybrid refrigeration system had additionally an electric compressor besides the present mechanical compressor for selective use according to the operating conditions. The applied electric compressor was a scroll type and with 18.0 cc displacement. In order to analyze the performance characteristics of the hybrid refrigeration system with respect to the cooling capacity and Coefficient of Performance (COP), other components, including two different types of compressors, were installed and tested under various operating conditions such as compressor speed and air flow rate of the evaporator. When the electric compressor was operated at 4,500 rev/min, the cooling capacity was about 4.0kW and COP was 3.5. When the mechanical compressor was operated, whereas the cooling capacity was higher than the electric controlled compressor, COP was lower due to the larger displacement and higher power consumption. To analyze the hybrid system operating characteristics due to reasonable cooling capacity with electric compressor operation, the mechanical compressor and electric compressor were operated by turns every 10 minutes under certain system operating conditions. Because surge pressure occurred when both compressors were switched on, the operating strategy required some time to balance the system pressure.

  • A computational study on the performance prediction of a two-stage axial compressor has been performed. A quasi-steady mixing-plane method is used on the rotor/stator interface to simulate the unsteady interaction phenomena. Detail flow mechanisms, for example, choke, stall, shock/boundary interaction, etc., have been observed and discussed in conjunction with performance characteristics. Calculational data agree reasonably well with the experimental data in terms of the performance characteristics showing the applicability of computational methods to the design validation of multistage axial compressors instead of experimental methods. But it is found that the stall margin of the original compressor was rather small, thus the design modification adopting a simple 1D/2D method has been conducted and its corresponding computations are also carried out. As a result of the redesign process, the stall margin becomes wide enough, but the overall performance is unsatisfactory, therefore, it seems that the redesign of the blades using 3-D methods is needed in the future work.

  • Now days, various types of ships are operated to transport both cargo and passengers all around the world. Most of the important auxiliary machinery installed in those ships is fluid machinery such as pumps, compressors, and fans. A large percentage of fluid machinery is pumps which are classified as turbo and positive displacement pumps. This paper analyzes only turbo pumps out of the two types. This thesis has two aims: (a) to analyze the present status of pumps installed in merchant and training ships and (b) to find the correlation among sea going pump kW, port pump kW, GE kW, ME MCR, number of pumps, ME kgf, pump kgf. Based on the ship's type, my paper seeks to find special characteristics as a result of analyzing head, flow rate, and kW. Moreover this paper analyzes and compares number of pumps, rpm of pumps, pump kW/ME MCR and pump kW/GE kW under the conditions of seagoing and berthing according to the ship's type. In conclusion, (1) For the exact comparison, information on the head, kW, flow rate, number of pumps by ship's type, the pump installation status of the Merchant Ships and Training Ships were tabulated and compared in this paper. (2) In order to qualify one ship as the delegate ship, several methods were used. The result of the examination indicates that the chosen ships could be justified as a suitable representation of ships of their own type. (3) The correlation of several values(total pump kW, port pump kW, GE kW, seagoing pump kW, pump weight, ME weight, ME MCR, number of pumps and ME kW) could be obtained.

  • In this paper a prediction method of GHP performance is proposed for increasing design accuracy. Two compressors with different capacity and 2311cc gas engine are used for prediction and the target capacity of GHP is 25HP. For predicting GHP performance at first the operation points are randomly selected and then as compared with compressor performance date and heat exchanger characteristic, more accurate operating points are decided through recursive calculation. Lastly engine performance date is used for calculating gas consumption volume. Predicting heating mode performance of GHP, evaporator is separated to the two section of absorbing heat in outdoor air and in engine. From the experimental results, it was found that the simulation model is good for the predicting GHP efficiency and the difference of predicted and measured efficiency is less than 5%.

  • The experimental apparatus consists of dehumidifier with multi-layer type heat exchangers to remove the moisture from automatic equipments, semiconductors, and manufacturing processes under the low temperature environment, and chemical production lines which are likely to take moisture. The major components of this system are four evaporators with different fin pitch, two compressors, two condensers and an expansion valve. In this study, the performance characteristics of dehumidifier is analyzed by the variations of frontal air velocity in the first heat exchanger(evaporator). The cooling capacity of each heat exchanger is acquired by the enthalpy calculating from measuring point of temperature and relative humidity of the first heat exchanger from 1.0m/s to 4.0m/s with increasing interval 0.5m/s, and the front air velocity. As a result, it is found that cooling capacity of the first heat exchanger showed the best cooling capacity when its frontal air velocity is 2.0 m/s.

  • The specific some types of compressors are appropriate for a use in hydrogen gas station. Metal diaphragm type of hydrogen compressor is one of them, which can satisfy the critical requirements of maintaining gas purity and producing high pressure over 850 bar. The objective of this study is to investigate an characteristics of compression through two-way Fluid-Structure-Interaction (FSI) analysis as bulk modulus and initial volume of oil independently varies. Deflection of diaphragm, oil density, gas and oil pressure were analyzed during a certain period of compression process. According to the analysis results, bulk modulus and initial volume remarkably affected deflection of diaphragm, oil density, gas and oil pressure. The highest gas pressure were attained with the highest bulk modulus of $7e^9\;N/m^2$ and the lowest initial oil volume of 80 cc.

  • Recently, needs for UAVs and small aircraft and small turbo jet or turbo fan engines for these air-crafts are increasing. Size and weight are the two main restrictions in small air-crafts such as UAV or VLJ propulsion system applications. Therefore, high power density is required in small size and designers come up with unconventional solutions in the design of small aero gas turbine engines. One of the solutions is the usage of highly loaded axial compressors. This paper introduces an aerodynamic design method of a highly loaded axial compressor and its review process. Numerical simulation has been carried out to assess the aerodynamic performance of the compressor.
