  • This paper present a new sort of multilayer piezoelectric ceramic transformer for the application to AC-adapters. This piezoelectric transformers operate in the second and third length extensional vibration mode. And the output performance of two types of piezoelectric transformers are compared by ANSYS, which is one of the FEM analysis program. As a result the minimum displacement was occurred at the two points in second length extensional vibration mode and three point in third length extensional vibration mode. One is the middle of input and the other is middle of output parts. And output voltage was inversely decreased by increasing number of output layers. Also The third mode type is shown higher power transition ratio than the second mode type.

  • The electric power subsystems (EPS) of most remote sensing satellites consist of a solar array as a source of energy, a storage battery, a power management and control (PMC) unit and a charge equalization unit (CEU) for the storage battery. The PMC and CEU use high frequency transformers in their power modules. This paper presents a design, implementation and testing results of a high frequency transformer for the EPS of satellite applications. Two approaches are used in the design process of the transformer based on the pre-determined transformer specifications. The transformer is designed based on an ETD 29 ferrite core. The implemented transformer consists of one center-tapped primary coil with eleven center-tapped secondary coils. The offline calculation results and measured values of R, L for transformer coils are convergence. A test circuit for measuring the transformer parameters like voltage, current and B-H hysteresis was implemented and applied. The test results confirm that the voltage waveforms of both primary and secondary coils were as desired. No overlapping occurred between the control signal and the transformer, which was not saturated during testing even during a short circuit test of the secondary channels. The dynamic B-H loop characteristics of the used transformer cores were measured. The sample test results are given in this paper.

  • This paper dealt with the measurement and analysis of electromagnetic waves radiated from a partial discharge (PD) source in insulation oil to apply condition monitoring of oil-immersed transformers. Two types of narrow-band monopole antennas with the resonant frequency of a 500 MHz and a 1 GHz were designed and fabricated. Also, a needle-plane electrode system was manufactured to simulate PDs and the curvature radius of the needle is 10 ${\mu}m$ and the diameter of the plane is 60 mm. Electromagnetic wave was measured by the PD measurement system with the monopole antennas. Detection sensitivity of the fabricated antenna was compared for the same PD magnitude; 620 $mV_{peak}$ for the 500 MHz antenna and 960 $mV_{peak}$ for the 1 GHz antenna to the PD magnitude of 74 pC. Consequently, the 1 GHz monopole antenna is more effective to detect PDs in oil-immersed transformers.

  • This paper deals with the temperature characteristics according to the cooling medium and the duct size in model transformers. For the analysis and the temperature-rise tests, two 400kVA model transformers have been manufactured. One has been filled with the alpha oil as the cooling medium and constructed the duct sizes of $3\textrm{mm}$ and $5\textrm{mm}$ in the low-voltage and high-voltage windings respectively. The other has been filled the beta oil and the duct sizes were $4\textrm{mm}$ and $6\textrm{mm}$. The temperature-rise tests have been performed by the back-to-back method and the load factor has been controlled the range of 90%∼130%. The temperature values have been measured by the thermocouple and from the sixteen points in each transformer. A commercial CFD program "FLUENT" has been used for the analysis of temperature distribution. The geometry of transformer has been modeled to 3-dimensional by using the hybrid calculation mesh including the radiator. And also, the natural convection velocity has been measured at the oil top position, and compared with the calculated results.

  • The almost pole transformers are constructed with tank, cover, clamp etc., that contains the insulation oil, core, coil, terminals, bus and the other accessories. If some fault current will be flown by some trouble or accident, interior pressure of the transformer shall be very quickly rise, and mechanical components or insulation oil from the transformer enclosure shall be propelled or dropped from the tank. For the prevention of the above accident, recently the pole transformers should be done 'the Design Tests for Fault Current Capability' according to ANSI C57.12.20(1997) There are two tests method in this standard, Test Number I with a high current arcing fault, without internal fusible elements, shall be conducted on rack enclosure with its minimum designed air space. Test Number II with an internal fusible element, shall be conducted on each enclosure diameter utilizing the internal fusible elements. KEPCO recently request to be done the 'Design Tests for Fault Current Capability' for pole transformers according to KEPCO's standard ES141-$533{\sim}545$, PS141-$482{\sim}518$ and RS141-$611{\sim}628$ that is same with Test Number I of ANSI C57.12.20.

  • This paper presents an interleaved resonant converter with a parallel-series transformer connection in order to achieve ripple current reduction at the output capacitor, zero voltage turn-on for the active switches, zero current turn-off for the rectifier diodes, less voltage stress on the rectifier diodes, and less current stress on the transformer primary windings. The primary windings of the two transformers are connected in parallel in order to share the input current and to reduce the root-mean-square (rms) current on the primary windings. The secondary windings of the two transformers are connected in series in order to ensure that the transformer primary currents are balanced. A full-wave diode rectifier is used at the output side to clamp the voltage stress of the rectifier diode at the output voltage. Two circuit modules are operated with the interleaved PWM scheme so that the input and output ripple currents are reduced. Based on the resonant behavior, all of the active switches are turned on under zero voltage switching (ZVS), and the rectifier diodes are turned off under zero current switching (ZCS) if the operating switching frequency is less than the series resonant frequency. Finally, experiments with a 1kW prototype are described to verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter.

  • A field-oriented UHF system for on-line PD monitoring of transformers. is designed, which has been installed inside the oil tank of a transformer by two ways: on-line installing mode through the oil-valve and pre-installing mode through the man hole/hand hole cover. This system has successfully captured long intermittent discharge signals that hadn't been detected through conventional techniques, and solved the problem successfully. The results demonstrate that UHF technique has great advantages for on-line PD monitoring of transformers. By adopting the peak detection technique, it becomes easy and effective for the transplantation of the phase-resolved pattern recognition technique from conventional method to UHF method, and then to realize continuous on-line monitoring, source characterization and trending analysis.

  • This paper presents a novel topology for cascaded transformer sub-multilevel converter. Eachsub-multilevel converter consists of two DC voltage sources with six switches to achieve five-level voltage. The proposed topology results in reduction of DC voltage sources and switches number. Single phase low frequency transformers are used in proposed topology and voltage transformation and galvanic isolation between load and sources are given by transformers. This topology can operate as symmetric or asymmetric converter but in this paper we have focused on symmetric state. The operation and performance of the suggested multilevel converter has been verified by the simulation results of a single-phase nine-level multilevel converter using MATLAB/SIMULINK.

  • The primary insulation materials used in an oil filled transformer are kraft paper, wood, porcelain and oil. Modern transformers use chemically treated paper to improve its tensile strength and resistance to aging caused by immersion in oil. But these insulation papers are mainly aged by thermal stress. Over the life time of the insulation paper and oil, it is exposed to high temperatures, oxygen and water. Its interaction with the steel of the tank and core plus the copper and aluminium of the windings will eventually cause the chemical properties of the oil to decay. High temperature have an effect on mechanical strength of cellulous paper used in the layer insulation. We made two aging cells in which insulation papers and mineral oil are conducted to test thermal properties. It is measured dielectric strength, number of acid, moisture, etc. of insulation paper and oil aged in the aging cells.
