Two kinds of static and dynamic state estimation methods are newly discussed for the problem of the measurement disturbance of environmental low-frequency noise in the presence of wind-induced noise. First, the probability characteristics of wind-induced noise are discussed in the form of probability distribution conditioned by wind speed, based on the simultaneous observation of the wind-induced noise and wind speed near a microphone. Next, especially form the viewpoint of simplicity for practical use, two kinds of static and dynamic state estimation methods are discussed. The static estimation method using the information on wind speed is fundamentally supported by the conservation principle of energy sum. The dynamic one is the method by using a recursive digital filter with the parameters successively renewed by the information on wind speed. This can be also simplified by using well-know Kalman filter under the assumption of the Gaussian distribution. The effectiveness of proposed two estimation methods are shown through experiments under a breezy condition in the open filed.

The human ear canal amplifies the sound pressure level at specific frequency bands. The characteristics of the ear canal are very similar to those of curved cylindrical tube. In this study, the characteristics of sound transfer in human ear canal were measured and the acoustical space of ear canal was reproduced from the canal cavity geometry. For the measurement of sound transfer function in ear canal, a probe microphone and a reference microphone were used. The sound transfer functions were measured for 5 human subjects. To reproduce the acoustical space of the ear canal, two kinds of ear simulator were designed. The first one is a straight cylindrical tube type and the other is a real-shape ear of which geometry was taken from a micro-CT scanning of a human ear. The characteristics of the reproduced apparatus were compared with those of the human and a commercial ear simulator, RA0045 of G.R.A.S. Inc. The comparison results show that the developed apparatus well represent the ear canal characteristics in the low frequency, but have limited coincidence in level over high frequency range.

We investigated passby noise measurement method in a small-sized semi-anechoic chamber satisfying the American based SAE J1470 Recommended Practice to facilitate the measurements. We have tired two passby noise prediction methods. One is line array microphone method in which the free space sound field is decomposed into its eigenfunctions in the spherical coordinates and rearranged according to the order of the spherical Hankel function. However, due to the characteristics of the spherical Hankel function, it is impossible to distinguish the function's characteristics according to the order in farfield. Consequently it can be applied in the transient region of the nearfield and the farfield. The other method is nearfield acoustic holography(NAH). Although measuring hologram for the several operational engine speeds by conventional scanning method is time-consuming work, we can greatly reduce the measuring time by selecting the appropriate engine speed through preexperimental knowledge. To verify this method we experimented with the outdoor passby noise measurements and the passby noise prediction in the small-sized semi-anechoic chamber for the identical passenger vehicle and obtained reasonable and acceptable results.

Since the necessity for the accurate measurement in the field of acoustics, vibration, and ultrasound was internationally increased, CCAUV (Consultative Committee for Acoustics , Ultrasound and Vibration) was created by the CIPM (International Committee for Weights and Measures) in 1998. One of the first activities of CCAUV is the key comparison on 1' standard microphones. The key comparison was done from April. 1999 to April. 2001 and 12 NMIs(National Metrology Institutes) including KRISS (Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science) were participated. The pilot laboratory was the National Physical Laboratory(NPL). The traveling standards were two LSIP(Laboratory Standard 1' Pressure Type) microphones specified in IEC 61094-1 and the calibration frequency ranges covers from 63Hz to 8kHz. In this paper, the analyzed results in the final report were summarized.

The accurate measurement of the room sound level is required in environment noise control. However, it has been found that the measurement system noise always corrupts the actual noise from the sound source. In this study, a new sound level measurement technique in which the system noise is eliminated from the measured signal by the cross spectrum method, is proposed. The received signals of two measuring microphones are recorded to DAT through the pre-amplifier and digitized by A/D converter. The cross spectrum calculated from the digitized signals gives the accurate sound level since the system noise is uncorrelated with the sound source noise which we want to measure. The performance of the proposed technique is verified experimentally to be effective and the technique is found to be economic since the low cost general purpose microphone could be used in this technique.
This article evaluates the accuracy of noise measurements for 37 noise measurement applications for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3Gs. Noise levels were measured using simultaneously a precision sound level meter and iPhones installed noise measurement applications at the levels of 70 dB, 80 dB and 90 dB at 1,000 Hz. Measurement errors were estimated by subtracting two measurements between iPhone and sound level meter. It was found that measurement errors of 34 applications(89.2%) were greater than ${\pm}2$ dB which is the maximum allowable error range for the Type II sound level meter. It was only 4 applications that measurement errors lie within ${\pm}2$ dB error range. There was no significant differences among measurements with four iPhone 4s. However, there were significant differences between the measurements with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3Gs using the same application. It was due to the different hardware specifications such as microphone. Therefore, noise measurement applications, for example, which has to utilize hardware of the smartphone, should be programmed to identify hardware specifications and to adopt appropriate correction factors upon hardware specifications. In conclusion, it is necessary to check accuracy and validity before using the noise measurement applications for iPhones. Also, it was suggested that it should develop an evaluation guideline or protocol on accuracy testing for the measurement applications using a smartphone.

Voice is made by systemic interaction of respiration, vocalization, articulation and resonation. There is no existing multi-channel voice analysis system to assess voice and respiration simultaneously. The most existing systems consist of. vocal fold vibration measurement such as stroboscopy, EGG (electroglottography) or laryngeal electromyography and voice analysis system. Since respiration has close relationship with voice simultaneous analysis of both vocal cord vibration and respiration are essential. In this study, a four channel integrated system are developed for acoustic analysis through microphone, vocal fold vibratory analysis using EGG, and respiratory analysis using two channel RIP (respiratory inductive plethysmography).

An approach to 3D visualization of multiple sound sources has been developed with the application of a moving array technique. Frequency-domain beamforming algorithm is used to generate a beam power map and the sound source is modeled as a point source. When a conventional delay and sum beamformer is used, it is considered that 2D distribution of sensors leads to have deficiency in spatial resolution along a measurement distance. The goal of moving an array in this study is to form 3D array aperture surrounding multiple sound sources so that the improved spatial resolution in a virtual space can be expected. Numerical simulation was made to examine source localization capabilities of various shapes of array. The 3D beam power maps of hemispherical and spherical distribution are found to have very sharp resolution. For experiments, two sound sources were placed in the middle of defined virtual space and arc-shaped line array was rotated around the sources. It is observed that spherical array show the most accurate determination of multiple sources' positions.

The two major problems related to the blood flow in replaced prosthetic heart valve are thrombus formation and hemolysis. Reliability of prosthetic valve is very important because its failure means the death of patient. There are many factors affecting the valvular failures and their representatives are mechanical failure and thrombosis, so early noninvasive detection is essentially required. The purpose of this study is to detect the various thromboses formation by using acoustic signal acquisition and its spectral analysis on the frequency domain. We made the thrombosis models using Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and they are thrombosis model on the disc, around the sewing ring and fibrous tissue growth across the orifice of valve. Using microphone and amplifier, we measured the acoustic signal from the prosthetic valve, which is attached to the pulsatile mock circulation system. A/D converter sampled the acoustic signal and the spectral analysis is the main algorithm for obtaining spectrum. Then the spectrum of normal and 5 different kinds of abnormal valve were obtained. Each spectrum waveform shows a primary and secondary peak. The secondary peak changes according to the thrombus model. To quantitatively distinguish the frequency peak of the normal valve from that of the thrombosed valves, analysis using a neural network was employed. Acoustic measurement has been used as a noninvasive diagnostic tool and is thought to be a good method for detecting possible mechanical failure or thrombus.

In this paper, we propose a conversational quality measurement (CQM) system for providing the objective QoS of high quality mobile VoIP voice telecommunication. For measuring the conversational quality, the VoIP telecommunication system is implemented in two smart phones connected with VoIP. The VoIP telecommunication system consists of echo cancellation, noise reduction, speech encoding/decoding, packet generation with RTP (Real-Time Protocol), jitter buffer control and POS (Play-out Schedule) with LC (loss Concealment). The CQM system is connected to a microphone and a speaker of each smart phone. The voice signal of each speaker is recorded and used to measure CE (Conversational Efficiency), CS (Conversational Symmetry), PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) and CE-CS-PESQ correlation. We prove the CQM system by measuring CE, CS and PESQ under various SNR, delay and loss due to IP network environment.
