Boiling heat transfer characteristics of a two-phase closed thermosyphons with various helical grooves are studied experimentally and a mathematical correlation is developed to predict the performance of such thermosyphons. The study focuses on the boiling heat transfer characteristics of two-phase closed thermosyphons with copper tubes having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 internal helical grooves. A two-phase closed thermosyphon with plain copper tube having the same inner and outer diameter as those of grooved tubes is also tested for comparison. Water, methanol and ethanol are used as working fluid. The effects of the number of grooves, various working fluids, operating temperature and heat flux are investigated experimentally. From these experimental results, a mathematical model is developed. In the present model, boiling of liquid pool in the evaporator is considered for the heat transfer mechanism of the thermosyphons. And also the effects of the number of grooves, the various working fluids, the operating temperature and the heat flux are brought into consideration. A good agreement between the boiling heat transfer coefficient of the thermosyphon estimated from experimental results and the predictions from the present mathematical correlation is obtained. The experimental results show that the number of grooves, the amount of the working fluid and the various working fluids are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. Also, the thermosyphons with internal helical grooves can be used to achieve some inexpensive and compact heat exchangers in low temperature.
Experimental investigation on two-phase flow boiling heat transfer of R-410A and R-134a in horizontal small tubes is reported. The pressure drop and local heat transfer coefficients were obtained over heat flux range of 5 to $40\;kW/m^2$, mass flux range of 70 to $600\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature range of 2 to $12^{\circ}C$, and quality up to 1.0 in test section with inner tube diameters of 3.0 and 0.5 mm, and lengths of 2000 and 330 mm, respectively. The section was heated uniformly by applying a direct electric current to the tubes. The effects of mass flux, heat flux, and inner tube diameter, on pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient are presented. The experimental results are compared against several existing correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for refrigerants in small tubes is developed.

Characteristics of flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels were investigated experimentally. The microchannels consisted of 9 parallel trapezoidal channels with each channel having 205 ${\mu}m$ of bottom width, 800 ${\mu}m$ of depth, $3.6^{\circ}$ of sidewall angle, and 7 cm of length. Tests were performed with R113 over a mass velocity range of 150~920 $kg/m^2s$, heat flux of 10~100 $kW/m^2$ and inlet pressures of 105~195 kPa. Flow boiling heat transfer coefficient in microchannels was found to be dominated by heat-flux. However the effect of mass velocity was not significant. Contrary to macrochannel trends, the heat transfer coefficient was shown to decrease with increasing thermodynamic equilibrium quality. A new correlation suitable for predicting flow boiling heat transfer coefficient was developed based on the laminar single-phase heat transfer coefficient and the nucleate boiling dominant equation. Comparison with the experimental data showed good agreement.

This study investigated heat transfer characteristics of refrigeration system using new type aluminium heat transfer tube for evaporator of refrigeration and air-conditioning comparing with bare tube. From the result of heat transfer experiment form one phase flow using cooled and hot water, about 20% heat transfer performance is superior in case of same quantity of flow and about 4% heat transfer performance if superior in case of same velocity comparing with bare tube. Casing of two phase flow, heat transfer performance of new type aluminum heat transfer tube shows about 50% superior heat transfer performance comparing with bare tube in the same evaporating pressure when using heat transfer tube as evaporator and shows about 47% increase when expressing performance coefficient as the rate of refrigerating capacity and compressing work. However, it can be known that pressure drop in the heat transfer tube is taken higher value of about 18% in case of new type aluminum heat transfer tube. From the above result, new type aluminum heat transfer tube is excellent comparing with bare heat transfer tube using the existing heat exchanger for refrigerator.

This study concerns the performance of the condensing heat transfer performance of two-phase closed thermosyphons with plain copper tube and tubes having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 internal micro grooves. Distilled water, methanol, ethanol have been used as the working fluid. The numbers of grooves and operating temperature have been investigated as the experimental parameters. Condensing heat transfer coefficients and heat flux are obtained from experimental data for each case of specific parameter. The experimental results are assessed and compared with existing correlations. The results show that working fluids, numbers of grooves are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. The working fluid with high latent heat such as water has a good heat transfer rate compared to methanol and ethanol. The relatively high rate of heat transfer is achieved when the thermosyphon with internal micro grooves is used compared to that with plain tube. Condensing heat transfer coefficient of grooved thermosyphon is 1.5∼2 times higher in methanol and 1.3∼l.5 times higher in ethanol compared to plain tube. The best condensation heat transfer performance is obtained for 60 grooves, and the maximum value of this case is 2.5 times higher than that of the plain tube.

In this study, condensation heat transfer experiments were conducted with two small diameter(ø7.5, ø4.0) tubes. Comparison with existing in-tube condensation heat transfer correlations indicated that the correlations overpredict the present data. For example, Akers correlation overpredicts the data upto 104%. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of the ø4.0 I.D. tube was smaller than that of the ø7.5 I.D tube; at the mass velocity of 300kg/$m^2$s, the difference was 12%. The pressure drop data of the small diameter tubes ware highly(two to six times) overpredicted by the Lockhart-Martinelli correlation. Subcooled forced convection heat transfer test confirmed that Gnielinski's single phase heat transfer correlation predicted the data reasonably well.

Characteristics of two-phase flow and heat transfer were numerically investigated in a submerged gas injection system when temperature of the injected gas was different from that of the liquid. The Eulerian approach was used for both the continuous and dispersed phases. The turbulence in the liquid phase was modeled using the standard $k-\varepsilon$$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The interphase friction and heat transfer coefficient were calculated from the correlations available in the literature. The turbulent dispersion of the phases was modeled by a "dispersion Prandtl number". In the case with heat transfer where the temperature of the injected gas is higher than the mean liquid temperature, the axial and the radial velocities are lower in comparison with the case of homogeneous temperatures. The results in the present research are of interest in the design and operation of a wide variety of material and chemical processes.

An experiment was conducted to investigate whether an equation of heat transfer coefficient derived form energy equation of two-phase plug flow can be actually applied to the industrial field. The heat is constantly transfered to the sand beds from the wall of heat exchanger while the sand moves down through cylindrical heat exchanger by gravity from feed hooper. To increase heat transfer, turbulators such as glass ball and steel pipe packings were used. In addition, the experiment in the case of fluidizing the sand beds was also carried out. The temperatures of the sand beds and the wall were measured along the heat exchanger axis. The density and porosity of the sand beds were also measured. The deviations of the mean velocity of sands from the velocity on the wall surface because of the slip conditions on the wall were negligible (within 3%). The heat transfer coefficients when the turbulators were used and when the sand beds were fluidized were found to be much greater than those of the plain plug flow.

This paper presents the comparison of heat transfer and pressure drop of various secondary refrigerants (single-phase and two-phase) in the indirect refrigeration system. The main results were summarized as follows: In case of heat transfer, it is useful to use secondary refrigerants in low evaporating temperature region and the heat transfer coefficient of single-phase is larger than two-phase secondary refrigerants. In case of pressure drop, it is useful to use secondary refrigerants in high evaporating temperature region and the pressure drop of two-phase is smaller than single-phase secondary refrigerant. Also, $CO_2$ is the best useful because pressure drop of $CO_2$ among the secondary refrigerants is the smallest.
