  • Numerical predictions of a fully developed turbulent flow through a square duct ($30mm{\times}30mm$) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape plus interrupted ribs are respectively conducted to investigate regionally averaged heat transfer and flow patterns. A rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter(e/$D_h$) of 0.067 and a lengthto-hydraulic diameter(L/$D_h$) of 30 are considered at Reynolds number ranging 8,900 to 29,000. The interrupted ribs are axially arranged on the bottom wall. The twisted tape is 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 28 mm, length of 900 mm, and 2.5 turns. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum sections. Two heating conditions are investigated for test channels with twisted tape inserts and rib turbulators: (1) electric heat uniformly applied to four side walls of the square duct, and (2) electric heat uniformly applied to two opposite walls of the square channel. The results show that uneven surface heating enhances the heat transfer coefficient over uniform heating conditions, and significant improvements can be achieved with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs.

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been employed for the Heat exchanger efficiency of a counter flow heat exchanger. The Heat exchanger efficiency has been assessed by considering the computed Nusselt number and flow friction characteristics in the double pipes heat exchanger equipped with two types twisted-tapes: (1) single clockwise direction and (2) alternate clockwise and counterclockwise direction. Cold and hot water are used as working fluids in shell and tube side, respectively. Hot and cold water inlet mass flow rates ranging are between 0.04 and 0.25 kg/s, and 0.166 kg/s, respectively. The inlet hot and cold water temperatures are 54 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results obtained from the tube with twisted-tapes insert are compared with plain tube. Nusselt number and friction factor obtained by CFD simulations were compared with correlations available in the literature. The numerical results were found in good agreement with the results reported in literature.

  • In this papre, AC losses of Bi-2223 tapes with different twist pitch of superconducting core were fabricated, measured and analyzed. These samples produced by a powder-in-tube method are multi-filamentary tape with Ag matrix. Also, it's produced by non-twist and different twist pitch(8, 10, 13, 30, 50, 70 mn). The critical current measurement was carried out under the environment in Liquid nitrogen and in zero field by 4-probe method. And the AC loss measurement was carried out under the environment of applied time-varying transport current by transport method. From experiment, the critical current is larger non-twist than twisted filament. And, the AC loss by Norris equation is higher non-twisted tape than 13mm twisted tape. Also, it is confirmed that of AC loss of tape having non-twist pitch larger than those having differnet twist pitch.

  • The effect of twisting on the microstructural evolution and critical current of BSCCO superconductor tape has been evaluated. Twisting pitches of the tapes are in the range of 8-70 mm and uniformly deformed. The critical current of twisted tape was dependent on the twist pitch. Specifically, it was observed that the critical current decreased with decreasing twist pitch, and only 50% of critical current was retained when the tape was twisted to a pitch of 8 mm. This reduction of the critical current may be related to the interface irregularity, smaller grain size, worse texture and the presence of cracks due to the induced strain during the twisting processing.

  • Many investigations have been made to determine the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics for single phase flow in tape generated swirl flow. But few studies have been carried out to investigate the heat transfer in two component, two phase swirl flow with non-boiling. An experimental study has been conducted to determine the effects of tape twist ratios on two phase convective heat transfer coefficients, pressure drop, and void fraction distribution in a non-boiling, air-water, two phase flow. The flow conditions were both swirl and non swirl flows. The internal diameter of the test section is 42.5mm. The tape twist ratios of pitch to diameter ratio varied from 4.0 to 10.6. The heating conditions were isothermal and nonisothermal. The flow patterns identified with experiments were bubbly, bubbly-slug, slug, and slug-annular flow in up-flow. This study has concluded that no significant difference in void fraction distribution were observed both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions, the pressure drop for two phase flow with twisted tape swirler increase as the tape twist ratio decrease, and that values of two phase heat transfer coefficient increase when the tape twist ratio decreases.

  • We fabricated BSCCO multifilaments superconductor tape and evaluated the effect of twisting on the microstructural evolution and critical current. Twist pitches of the tapes are in the range of 70 - 8 mm and uniformly deformed. It was observed that grain size and the degree of texture decreased as decreasing pith, probably due to the formation of the irregular interface between Ag and filaments. In addition, critical current of the tapes decreased to 6.5A with decreasing pitch to 8 mm, showing 48% of degradation compared to the untwisted tape(12.5 A). These reduction of critical current may be related to the interface irregularity, smaller grain size, worse texture and the presence of cracks due to the induced strain during twisting processing.

  • The effect of twisting on the microstructure and AC losses of Bi-2223 superconductor tape has been evaluated. Twisting pitches of the tapes are in the range of 12~60 mm and uniformly deformed. The critical current of the tapes was measured to decreased with decreased pitch. This reduction is believed to be due to the irregular interface, poor grain alignment. In addition, AC losses of the tape reduced as the pitch decreased probably due to combined effects of lower critical current and electrically decoupled filament of twisted tape.

  • It is important to estimate the total AC loss which is the total energy, or power, dissipated in the superconductor in the simultaneous application of AC transport current and an AC external magnetic field. Experimental and numerical works on AC loss estimation of high $T_c$ superconductors in the author's group are reviewed. The method and the set-up for total AC loss measurements are described. The experimental results for a twisted Bi-2223 multifilamentary tape and a Y-123 mm conductor are given. A general theory for numerical electromagnetic field analysis of superconductor by the finite element method is explained. The numerical results for twisted Bi-2223 multifilamentary tapes and a rectangular superconductor simulating coated conductors are presented.
