PP/MMT nanocomposites having a various compositions were prepared by melt blending with a twin screw extruder. In this study, maleic anhydride-grafted PP (MAH-g-PP) was used as a compatibilizer in order to assist the exfoliation or hen in the pp matrix. from the results or x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurements for the nanocomposites, we confirmed that MMT was exfoliated. PPM nanocomposites have shown good flame retardancy by synergistic effect between MMT and flame retardant. The mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposites showed significant enhancement compared with those of neat PP, The excellent flame retardancy of the PP/MMT nanocomposites, UL94 V-0 value, was successfully obtained with reduced amount of the flame retardant.
Blend resin (PET/PETG 70/30 blend) of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly (ethylene terephthalate glycol) (PETG) of weight percent 70/30 was prepared by a twin-screw extruder. Undrawn films of the blend and pure PETG were made by melt-press in hot press. Drawn films were made by capillary rheometer. Crystallinity, shrinkage, thermal, dynamic mechanical, and mechanical properties of these blends and PETG drawn films were investigated by wide angle X-ray diffractometer, dry oven, DSC thermal analyzer, and tensile tester. The crystallinity and density of these films increased with increasing draw ratio and draw rate but decreased with increasing draw temperature. The crystallinity and density of the blend films were higher than those of PETG films. The tensile strength and tensile modulus of these drawn alms increased with increasing draw ratio and draw rate but decreased with increasing draw temperature. The tensile strength and tensile modulus of blend films were higher than those of PETG films. Shrinkage of PETG md blend films decreased with draw ratio and draw rate. Shrinkage of undrawn blend film was 600% higher than that of pure PET film.
We studied in-line monitoring the dispersion of highly energetic material simulant by a twin screw extruder having a high temperature ultrasonic system. The simulant suspension system consisted of ethylene vinyl acetate and Dechlorane plus 25 as binder and filler, respectively. With increasing filling fraction, the ultrasonic velocity was not changed but the attenuation linearly decreased. It was possible to estimate the solid fraction of well dispersed suspension system by measuring ultrasonic attenuation. The ultrasonic attenuation of samples filled over 60 v% approached straight line with increasing filling fraction when the samples was extruded repeatedly. It was due to the enhanced dispersion of solid particles in the suspension system. It was believed that the degree of dispersion and filling fraction could be obtained by combination of on-line measurement like ultrasonic attenuation and off-line analysis like TGA and SEM with image analyzer.
The effects of a compatibilizer on polypropylene (PP)/poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) blends were studied. Blends of the PP/ABS, with PP-g-SAN copolymer as a compatibilizer, were prepared using a twin screw extruder. The flexural and impact strength of the PP/ABS blends with the PP-g-SAN copolymer increased significantly with PP-rich compositions on the addition of the PP-g-SAN copolymer at 3 phr. The increase in the mechanical properties of the PP/ABS/PP-g-SAN blend may have been due to the toughening effects of the ABS in the PP-rich compositions. In the morphology study of the PP/ABS/PP-g-SAN (80/20) blend with the PP-g-SAN copolymer, the minimum droplet size, $5.1{\mu}m$, was observed with the addition on phr of the PP-g-SAN copolymer. The complex viscosity of the PP/ABS/PP-g-SAN (80/20) blends increased with the addition of3 phr of the PP-g-SAN copolymer. From the above mechanical properties, morphology and complex viscosity results for the PP/ABS blends, it is suggested that the compatibility is more increased with the PP-rich composition (PP:ABS=80/20 wt%) of the PP/ABS blend on the addition of 3 phr of the PP-g-SAN copolymer.
The effects of poly($({\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) on poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) blends were studied. Blends of ABS/PC (70/30, wt%) with PCL as a compatibilizer were prepared by a twin screw extruder. From the glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ results of the ABS/PC blends with PCL, the $T_g$(PC) of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends decreased with increasing PCL content. From the results of the morphology of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends with PCL, the phase separation between the ABS and PC phases became less significant after adding PCL in the ABS/PC blends. In addition, the morphological studies of the ABS/PC blends etched by NaOH indicated that the shape of the droplet was changed from regular round to irregular round by adding PCL in the ABS/PC blends. These results for the mechanical properties of the ABS/PC blends with PCL indicated that the tensile, flexural and impact strengths of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends peaked at a PCL content of 0.5 phr. From the results for the rheological properties of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends with PCL content, the storage modulus, loss modulus and complex viscosity increased at PCL content up to 5 phr. From the above results of the $T_g$, mechanical properties, morphology and complex viscosity of the ABS/PC blends with PCL, it was concluded that the compatibility was increased with PCL addition in the ABS/PC (70/30, wt%) blends and that the optimum concentration of PCL as a compatibilizer is 0.5 phr.
ZnAl-LDH(layered double hydroxide) (Zn:Al=2:1 mole ratio) modified with stearic acid (SA) or oleic acid (OA) was synthesized by a coprecipitation method and compounded to SAN polymer at various contents. All the SAN composites were manufactured by a co-rotating twin-screw extruder and subsequently injection molded into several specimen. Morphology, transparency, and thermal resistance of these composites were evaluated by TEM, XRD(X-ray diffractometry), UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and thermogravimetric analysis. SAN nanocomposites containing OA-$Zn_2Al$ LDH showed better optical transmittance than SAN nanocomposites containing SA-$Zn_2Al$ LDH. All the SAN nanocomposites containing OA-$Zn_2Al$ LDH or SA-$Zn_2Al$ LDH exhibited improvement of thermal resistance at second stage of thermal oxidation. These results were explained by the fact that the interaction between organic modifier and polymer performed an important role in the property improvement of polymer nanocomposites.
In order to develop the blends with good long-term thermal stability and tensile elongation, the blends of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and 7 kinds of elastomer were tested. PPS/elastomer (90/10, 80/20, 70/30) blend samples were prepared by compression molding after twin screw extrusion or punching after sheet extrusion. Rheological, mechanical property and morphology of the blends were analyzed by capillary rheometer, UTM, impact tester, and SEM. For long-term thermal stability tests, the mechanical properties were measured again after the samples were stored in a convection oven for a week. The tensile strengths were almost same regardless of kinds of elastomer and the tensile elongation was the maximum for the PPS/m-EVA blend. As the content of elastomer increased, the elongation increased but delamination occurred at 30 wt% of elastomer content. The tensile strength increased but the elongation decreased seriously after thermal aging. Many problems related with PPS processing could be solved by adding a small amount of the elastomers partially compatibile with PPS and it would be applicable to develop various PPS grades.
High density polyethylene (HDPE)/kenaf fiber (KF) composites included two types of KF with different lengths were fabricated by using a twin screw extruder. A thermally expandable microcapsule (EMC) was used to form HDPE/KF. The KF lengths were 0.3 mm and 3 mm. The contents of KF and EMC were fixed at 20 wt% and 5 wt%, respectively. From FT-IR data of KF, which underwent chemical treatment, peaks around 1700 and $1300cm^{-1}$ decreased. This might be caused by the reduction of lignin and hemicellulose due to the chemical treatment of KF. Based on the specific gravity, thermal stability and tensile property, physical properties of the composites with a 3 mm fiber were good. However, if the fiber is longer, poor appearance might be caused due to the thermal degradation during processing. Thus, the adequate length of KF should be chosen to maintain the appearance and physical properties for industrial applications of HDPE/KF/EMC composites. The tensile strength for 0.3 mm fiber treated with chemicals increased slightly.
CNT-polypropylene (PP) composites were compounded by solvent dispersion method with uniform dispersion by using twin screw extruder. Damage sensing effects based on conductive carbon nanotubes (CNT) were evaluated to monitor the internal damage of CNT-PP composites using electrical resistance measurement. Mechanical and interfacial properties of CNT-PP composites were investigated and compared with neat PP. The mechanical properties of PP matrix were improved after adding CNT, because of the reinforcing effect of CNT fillers. In order to monitor the internal damage of CNT-PP composite, the change in electrical resistance of the composites was measured under fatigue loading and bending tests. CNT fillers exhibited good sensing under electrical resistance measurements. It is shown that CNT-PP composites with low CNT contents allow identifying critical cyclic loading, which are found to be accompanied with the internal failure.
Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) reinforced poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) composites are studied. To increase the interfacial interactions between PET and MWNTs, the MWNTs are functionalized with bishydroxy-ethylene-terephthalate (BHET). The functionalized MWNTs are melt blended into PET matrix using a twin screw extruder. The amount of MWNTs loaded in PET matrix ranges from 0.5 to 2.0 wt%. After compounding and spinning, the filaments are post-drawn and annealed. To verify the chemical modifications of carbon nanotubes, Raman, $^1H$ NMR, XPS, TGA and FE-SEM are used. The nanocomposites are also analyzed with DSC, TGA, and UTM. These tests show that crystallization temperature and thermal degradation temperature increase due to the functionalized MWNTs. Also, tensile test shows that yield strength and toughness increase more than 30% with addition of only 1 wt% of MWNTs. These results show that the introduction of BHET onto the MWNTs is a very effective way in manufacturing MWNT/PET composite.
