  • A study was performed for verification of creation mechanism of turn down mark in thick plate. The roll mark was produced by plate bending when the front of plate was collided with roller table rolls. Various process conditions which are temperatur distribution along the thickness direction of plate, pass line, and reduction ration were investicated. These process conditions affected the amount of plate bending and were a major cause of turn down mark.

  • Hemming process, composed of flanging, pre-hemming and main hemming, is the last one of a series of forming processes conducted on the automotive panels, having a great influence on the outward appearance of them. The hem quality can be quantitatively defined by the hemming defects including turn-down, warp and roll-in. However, it is difficult to evaluate and predict the hem quality through the experimental measurement or the numerical calculation since the size of defects is very small. This study is focused on how to simulate in the finite element analysis (FEA) the same conditions as in the experiment. The FEA result on turn-down, that was obtained from a finite element model including the spring element linked to the flanging pad, had a good correlation with the experimental data. It was found that the radius of curvature of the flange deeply affects the final hem quality and therefore high rigidity of forming tools and tight assembling tolerance are highly recommended. An over-stroke of the main hemming punch is also proposed to reduce the turn-down.

  • In this paper, a new charge pump is proposed to reduce the timing mismatch in the conventional current-steering charge pumps. Conventional current-steering charge pumps used NMOS input stages both for UP and DOWN signals, which resulted in different numbers of stage for UP and DOWN delay paths. The proposed charge pump has equalized the numbers of stages for UP and DOWN signals by using a PMOS stage for the DOWN signal. The simulation results show that the conventional current-steering charge pump has 14ns and 6ns for optimized timing mismatches between UP and DOWN signals for turn-on and turn-off, respectively. On the other hand, the proposed charge pump has improved timing mismatches of 6ns and 5ns for turn-on and turn-off, respectively. As a result, the reference spurs are reduced from -26dBc to -39dBc for the proposed charge pump. The proposed charge pump was designed by using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The measurement results show that the maximum variation of the charging and discharging current over the charge pump output voltage range of 0.3~1.5V is approximately 1.5%.

  • The hemming process, composed of flanging, pre-hemming and main hemming, is the last one of a series of forming processes conducted on the automotive panels, having greater influence on the outward appearance of cars rather than on their performance. The hem quality can be quantitatively defined by the hemming defects including turn-down/up, warp and roll-in/out. However, it is difficult to evaluate and predict the hem quality through an experimental measurement or a numerical calculation since the size of defects is very small. This study aims to precisely evaluate the hemming defects, especially turn-down and roll-in, through numerical and experimental approaches and to investigate the influence of process parameters on the hem quality, focused on how to simulate the same conditions as in the experiment by the finite element analysis (FEA). The FEA results on the turn-down and roll-in obtained from a model composed of the optimum-sized elements, including a spring element linked to the flanging pad, and given the double master contact condition between the inner and outer panels, had a good correlation with the experimental data. It is thought possible to make an early estimate of the hem quality in a practical automotive design by applying the methodology proposed in this study.

  • In this paper, a non-dissipative snubber for reducing the switching losses in the step down converter is proposed. The conventional step down converter, e.g., buck converter, suffers from serious switching losses and consequentially heat generation because of its hard switching. Thus, it is unsuitable for high switching frequency operation. Reduction of the reactive components' size, such as an output inductor and capacitor, is difficult. The proposed snubber can slow down the increasing current slopes and switch voltage at turn-on and turn-off transients, thereby significantly reducing the switching loses. Additionally, the slowly increasing current during switch turn-on transition, can effectively solve the output rectifier diode reverse recovery problem. Therefore, the proposed non-dissipative snubber not only leads to the efficiency of converter operation at high switching frequency but also reduces the reactive components size in proportion to the switching frequency. To confirm the validity of the proposed circuit, theoretical analysis and experimental results from a 150 W, 1 MHz prototype are presented.

  • Hem quality can be determined mainly by turn-down and roll-in. Turn-down, that is created by the elastic recovery, can't be easily detected and measured since it is usually as small as 0.03 m. This study is focused on the precise evaluation of the hemming defects through analytical and experimetal approaches, and on the investigation of the influence of process parameters on the final hem quality. Implicit finite element analysis of plane-strain hemming process is performed by using a commercial code ABAQUS/Standard. Experiment and measurement is also carried out for steel and aluminium sheet metals, and the results are compared with those of analysis.

  • This paper describes the results of a series of experiments executed by using two pilot-scale oxv-fuel burners are designed for maximum capacity of 50,000 kacl/hr, 300,000 kcal/hr and installed in the test furnace. The effects of turn-down ratio, excess oxygen ratio, nozzle exit velocity, injection angle, swirl vane angle and inlet oxygen temperature on the combustion characteristic are investigated. Temperature distributions are measured using R-type and Molybdenum sheathed C-type thermocouple. The results showed that maximum temperature and mean temperature increase with the increase of turn-down ratio and inlet oxygen temperature. The maximum flame temperature was increased about 35% compared to the case of equivalent air operated condition. In addition, Optimum excess oxygen ratio and nozzle characteristics are obtained for this oxy-fuel glass melting furnace.

  • In this study, a new zero-voltage transition (ZVT) buck converter with coupled inductor using a synchronous rectifier and a lossless clamp circuit is proposed. The regular buck converter with tapped inductor has extended duty cycle for high step-down applications. However, the leakage inductance of the coupled inductor produced considerable voltage spikes across the switch. A lossless clamp circuit is used in the proposed converter to overcome this problem. The freewheeling diode was replaced with a synchronous rectifier to reduce conduction losses in the proposed converter. ZVT conditions at turn-on and turn-off instants were provided for the main switch. The synchronous rectifier switch turned on under zero-voltage switching, and the auxiliary switch turn-on and turn-off were under zero-current condition. Experimental results of a 100 W-100 kHz prototype are provided to justify the validity of the theoretical analysis. Moreover, the conducted electromagnetic interference of the proposed converter is measured and compared with its hard-switching counterpart.

  • This paper deals with a newly developed direction indicator system of a car which displays left turn and U- turn signal differently, so that the following driver can identify the Intent of the next car ahead easily. In general, when a car want to change its direction, the driver move the blinker lever below the steering wheel up or down. However, as the left turn and U-turn signal are the same, there always be the risk of rear-end collision by misinterpreting U-turn signal as left turn signal. In this paper, a new direction indicator system which differentiates left turn and U-turn signal is developed. The left turn signal is the same as before, but when a driver want to U-turn, an additional U-turn signal blinks at the rear of the car. By identifying the direction signals clearly, the developed system is expected to alleviate the risk of car accident.
