One of commonly physical phenomena encountered in pump sump systems in which its significant influence to the hydraulic performance of pump system plays an important role in the field of fluid engineering, is the appearance of free surface and submerged vortices. In this paper, a study of the vortices behavior and their formative mechanism of asymmetry is considered in this paper by using numerical approach. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and k-omega Shear Stress Transport turbulence model used to describe the properties of turbulent flows, in company with VOF multiphase model, are implemented by Fluent code with multi-block structured grid system. In the numerical simulation, the calculated elevation of air-water interface and vortex core contours are used to classify visually surface vortices as well as submerged vortices. It is shown that the free surface vortex is identified by the concavity of liquid region from the free surface and swirling flow at that own plane. To investigate the distinctive behavior of these vortices corresponding to each given flow rate at the same water level, some numerical testing of them are considered here in such a manner that the flow pattern of surface vortex are obtained similarly to the obtained results from experiment. Furthermore, the influence due to the change of grid refinement and the variation of depth of the concavity are also considered in this paper. From that, these influential factors will be implemented to design a good pump sump with higher performance in the future.

In the present paper, turbulent open-channel flows over longitudinal bedforms are numerically simulated. The Reynolds- averaged Navier-Stokes equations in curvilinear coordinates are solved with the non-linear $k-{\varepsilon}$ model by Speziale( 1987). First, the developed model is applied to rectangular open channel flows for purposes of model validation and parameter sensitivity studies. It is found that the parameters $C_D$ and $C_E$ are important to the intensity of secondary currents and the level of turbulent anisotropy, respectively. It is found that the non-linear $k-{\varepsilon}$ model can hardly reproduce the turbulence anisotropy near the free surface. However, the overall pattern of the secondary currents by the present model is seen to coincide with measured data. Then, numerical simulations of turbulent flows over longitudinal bedforms are performed, and the simulated results are compared with the experimental data in the literature. The simulated secondary currents clearly show upflows and downflows over the ridges and troughs, respectively. The numerical results of secondary currents, streamwise mean velocity, and turbulence structures compare favorably with the measured data. However, it is observed that the secondary currents towards the troughs were significantly weak compared with the measured data.

Various types of flow patterns around the stepped weir and spillway, such as the skimming flow over such structures and the wave-type flow with a standing undular hydraulic jump and roller downstream of the structures, are developed in open channels. Unsteady three-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out using a hybrid RANS-LES turbulence modeling approach and the volume of fluid method for resolving free surface fluctuations to represent the turbulent flow including the skimming flow and wave-type flow over a stepped weir installed in a rectangular channel. The comparison of numerical results with an existing experimental measurement reveals that the present numerical simulations reasonably well reproduce the turbulent flow passing the stepped weir, in terms of time-averaged velocity profiles at selected locations downstream of the weir, flow topology characterized by the wave-type and skimming flows, the maximum height and length of the standing wave and the length of reattachment of recirculating zone. The numerical result further elucidates the distinct flow behaviors of the wave-type and skimming flow by presenting instantaneous intense variations of free surface and velocity vectors, the distributions of Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy and three-dimensional complex features of coherent structures and total pressure distribution.

An experimental study has been performed on the flow over a rotating disk, where the diameter of the disk is 500 mm and the maximum vertical deviation of the upper surface is $50 \mu{m}$ for the whole range of the angular velocity up to 3400 rpm. The flow visualization experiment for the wall jet flow induced by impinging circular jet is carried out using schlieren system and measurements are made by 3-hole and 5-hole pitot tubes. Schlieren photographs show that as the rotating speed increases the wall jet flow becomes more stable and the size of the largest eddies becomes smaller. Measurements for impinging jet flow on the stationary disk verify the accuracy of the present experiment, and those for free rotating disk flow display the existence of transition region from laminar to turbulent flows. Measurements for impinging jet flow on the rotating disk exhibit the interaction between the wall jet and the viscous pumping effect, which explains the decay in size of turbulent eddies illustrated by the schlieren photographs.

In this study, flow characteristics around the hull form of KLNG are investigated by numerical simulations. The numerical simulations of the turbulent flows with the free surface around KLNG have been carried out at Froude number 0.1964 using the FLUENT 6.3 solver with Reynolds stress turbulence model. Several GEOSIM models are adopted to consider the scale effect attendant on Reynolds number. Furthermore, a full scale ship is calculated and the result is compared with the numerical results of GEOSIM models. The calculated results of GEOSIM models and the full scale ship are compared with the experiment data of MOERI towing tank test and Inha university towing tank test. Moreover, wake distribution on the propeller plane of the full scale ship is estimated using the numerical results of GEOSIM models. The prediction result is directly compared with the simulation result in full scale.

Liquid film flows are classified into waveless laminar, wavy laminar, and turbulent flows depending on the Reynolds number or the flow stability. Since the wavy motions of the film flows are so intricate and nonlinear, studies on them have largely been experimental. Most numerical approaches have been limited to the waveless flow regime. The various free surface-tracking schemes adopted for this problem were used to more accurately estimate the average film thickness, rather than to capture the unsteady wavy motion. In this study, the wavy motions in laminar wavy liquid film flows with Reynolds numbers of 200-1000 were simulated with various numerical schemes based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method for interface tracking. The results from each numerical scheme were compared with the experimental results in terms of the average film thickness, the wave velocity, and the wave amplitude.
We report the results of three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic simulations of star cluster formation in turbulent molecular clouds, with primary attention to how stellar radiation feedback controls the lifetime and net star formation efficiency (SFE) of their natal clouds. We examine the combined effects of photoionization and radiation pressure for a wide range of cloud masses (10^4 - 10^6 Msun) and radii (2 - 80 pc). In all simulations, stars form in densest regions of filaments until feedback becomes strong enough to clear the remaining gas out of the system. We find that the SFE is primarily a function of the initial cloud surface density, Sigma, (SFE increasing from ~7% to ~50% as Sigma increases from ~30 Msun/pc^2 to ~10^3 Msun/pc^2), with weak dependence on the initial cloud mass. Control runs with the same initial conditions but without either radiation pressure or photoionization show that photoionization is the dominant feedback mechanism for clouds typical in normal disk galaxies, while they are equally important for more dense, compact clouds. For low-Sigma clouds, more than 80% of the initial cloud mass is lost by photoevaporation flows off the surface of dense clumps. The cloud becomes unbound within ~0.5-2.5 initial free-fall times after the first star-formation event, implying that cloud dispersal is rapid once massive star formation takes place. We briefly discuss implications and limitations of our work in relation to observations.
This paper investigates the impacts of turbulent anisotropy on the mean flow and turbulence structures in vegetated open-channel flows. The Reynolds stress model, which is an anisotropic turbulence model, is used for the turbulence closure. Plain open-channel flows and vegetated flows with emergent and submerged plants are simulated. Computed profiles of the mean velocity and turbulence structures are compared with measured data available in the literature. Comparisons are also made with the predictions by the k-$\epsilon$ model and by the algebraic stress model. For plain open-channel flows and open-channel flows with emergent vegetation, the mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles by isotropic and anisotropic turbulence models were hardly distinguished and they agreed well with measured data. This means that the mean flow and Reynolds stress is hardly affected by anisotropy of turbulence. However, anisotropy of turbulence due to the damping effect near the bottom and free surface is successfully simulated only by the Reynolds stress model. In open-channel flows with submerged vegetation, anisotropy of turbulence is strengthenednear the vegetation height. The Reynolds stress model predicts the mean velocity and turbulence intensity better than the algebraic stress model or the k-$\epsilon$ model. However, above the vegetation height, the k-$\epsilon$ model overestimates the mean velocity and underestimates turbulence intensity Sediment transport capacity of vegetated open-channel flows is also investigated by using the computed profiles. It is shown that the isotropic turbulence model underestimates seriously suspended load.

An experimental study to evaluate dynamic structures of flow and turbulence characteristics in bubble-driven liquid flow in a rectangular tank with a varying flow rate of compressed air is conducted. Liquid flow fields are measured by time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) with fluorescent tracer particles to eliminate diffused reflections, and by an image intensifier to acquire enhanced clean particle images. Instantaneous vector fields are investigated by using the two frame cross-correlation function and bad vectors are eliminated by magnitude difference technique. By proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis, the energy distributions of spatial and temporal modes are acquired. When Reynolds number increases, bubble-induced turbulent motion becomes dominant rather than the recirculating flow near the side wall. The total kinetic energy transferred to the liquid from the rising bubbles shows a nonlinear relation regarding the energy input because of the interaction between bubbles and free surface.
The backward-facing step (BFS) is a benchmark geometry for analyzing flow separation occurred at the edge and resulting development of shear layer and recirculation zone that are occupied by turbulent flow. It is important to accurately reproduce and analyze the mean flow and turbulence statistics of such flows to design physically stable and performance assurance structure. We carried out 3D RANS computations with widely used, two representative turbulence models, k-ω SST and RNG k-ε, to reproduce BFS flow at the Reynolds number of 23,000 and the Froude number of 0.22. The performance of RANS computations is evaluated by comparing numerical results with an experimental measurement. Both RANS computations with two turbulence models appear to reasonably well reproduce mean flow in the shear layer and recirculation zone, while RNG k-ε computation results in about 5% larger velocity between the outer edge of boundary layer and the free surface above the recirculation zone than k-ω SST computation and experiment. Both turbulence models underestimate the shear stress distribution experimentally observed just downstream of the sharp edge of BFS, while shear stresses computed in the boundary layer downstream of reattachment point are agree reasonably well with experimental measurement. RNG k-ε modeling reproduces better shear stress distribution along the bottom boundary layer, but overestimates shear shear stress in the approaching boundary layer and above the bottom boundary layer downstream of the BFS.
