  • The effectiveness of a UV(ultra violet) disinfection system depends on the characteristics of the waste water, flow conditions, the intensity of UV radiation, the amount of time the microorganisms are exposed to the radiation, and the reactor configuration. The wast water flow conditions are important factors in the design of UV disinfection system from the point of enhancement view of UV disinfection. The turbulent energy intensity in the wake by the vortex shedding are effective for UV radiation. Therewith the effectiveness of vortex generator is considered as a enhancement of UV disinfection. The experimental results presented give important evidences and explain that it is possible to predict UV disinfection performance based on flow experiments. An experimental investigation of two types of the vortex generator is presented. The qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the wake are made by flow visualization using smoke wire method and the measurement of vortex frequencies in the wind tunnel. From the experiment, following results were obtained that the delta wing type vortex generator is more effective than circular type because of the higher vortex frequencies and the smaller drag.

  • The flow characteristics of a circular cylinder surrounded by an outer permeable cylinder were experimentally investigated using Particle Image Velocimetry Technique in deep water flow. In order to consider the effects of diameter and porosity of the outer cylinder on flow structures of the inner cylinder, five different outer cylinder diameters (D=37.5, 52.5, 60, 75 and 90 mm) and eight different porosities (${\beta}$=0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.65, 0.7, 0.75, 0.8 and 0.85) were selected. During the experiments, the diameter of inner cylinder was kept constant as d=30 mm. The depth-averaged free-stream velocity was adjusted as U=0.156 m/s, which corresponds to the Reynolds number of Re=5000 based on the inner cylinder diameter. It has been concluded that both the outer permeable cylinder diameter and the porosity have important influences on the attenuation of vortex shedding in the wake region. The presence of outer permeable cylinder decreases the magnitude of Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy compared to the bare cylinder case. Moreover, the spectral analysis of vortex shedding frequency has revealed that the dominant frequency of vortex shedding downstream of the cylinder arrangement also reduces substantially due to the weakened Karman shear layer instability.

  • A number of methods has been developed for calculation of heat transfer in the vertical round tube under conditions of forced convection with uniform heat flux at wall. I would like to express hereby one of applications of this study in the design of heat exchanger instruments for water flow at $15.8^{\circ}C(p_r=8)$ used frequently in our daily life. Also all the results are investigated for forced convective heat transfer in the case of heated water-flow at uniform wall heat flux in the vortical round copper tube, where the ratio of length to diameter will be 44. They are well in agreement with Gratz and Kraussold equation respectively in laminar and transition flow range. In turbulent flow in the range from Re=10,000 to 65,000, the experimental formula Is show as follows ; Nu=0.023 $R_e^{0.814}\;P_r^{0.4}$. And this is agreed with Dittus - Boelter equation when Reynolds number exponent increases from 0.80 to 0.814.

  • Removal of water contents in a gas is needed in industrial field of gas processing related on energy production/conversion, and environmental treatment. Inertial separators are economic devices for separating droplets from the gas stream. For accurate understanding of removal process in a curved vane mist eliminator, a numerical model including turbulent dispersion, evaporation and condensation of water vapor at surface of droplets is required. A two-stage curved vane mist eliminator has been modeled, and fluid flow of mixture of air and water vapor and droplet trajectories were solved simultaneously with taking into account two-way coupling. Removal efficiency of droplets with various inlet condition of relative humidities (RH, 40%, 90%, and 100%) were compared. As RH increased, the effect of evaporation decreased and inertial separation efficiencies of droplets obtained increased especially for droplets of diameter below 10 micrometers.

  • This study aims at numerically investigating the water-surface characteristics such as wave height distribution depending on the current direction around the three-dimensional permeable submerged breakwaters in wave-current coexisting field which has not been considered in detail so far. In addition, the characteristics of the velocity field including the average flow velocity, longshore current and turbulent kinetic energy, which act as the main external forces of formation of salient, are also examined. For numerical analysis, olaFlow which is open source code of CFD was used and the numerical tests included different types of target waves, both regular waves and irregular waves. Numerical results indicated that wave height variation with wave following or opposing a current behind the submerged breakwater is closely related to turbulent kinetic energy. Furthermore, it was found that weaker longshore currents are formed under wave-current coexisting field compared to the non-current conditions, and transport flow is attenuated. As a result, it was possible to understand the influence of current existence and direction (following and opposing) on the formation of the salient formed behind the submerged breakwaters.

  • Flow patterns are very complex and interactive between cylinders. The patterns are turbulent and non-linear caused by various factors. In this paper, flow patterns and pressure gradient around vertical cylinders were investigated by experiment. Changing gaps between cylinders the flow patterns are measured at a fixed coming velocity. Flow patterns showed very complex and closely related to the coming velocity and cylinder space. The pressure gradient around the flow field is observed by twelve hole pitot tubes and manometer. The experiment has been conducted in circulating water channel with PIV system. That can visualize flow patterns. The laser beam was used to reflect the image from particles and recorded by CCD camera. The cylinders were spaced from ID to 5D with 0.5m/sec of incoming flow velocity. The experimental results using pitot tube showed in good agreement with results of precious by others study. The results can be applied in the understanding and design of multiple pile array structures.

  • The flow fields around an elliptic cylinder of axis ratio AR=2 adjacent to a free surface were investigated experimentally using a water channel. The main objective is to understand the effect of the free surface on the flow structure in the near-wake. The flow fields were measured by varying the depth of cylinder submergence, for each experimental condition, 350 velocity fields were measured using a single-frame PIV system and ensemble-averaged to obtain the spatial distribution of turbulent statics. For small submergence depths a large-scale eddy structure was observed in the near-wake, causing a reverse flow near the free surface, downstream of the cylinder. As the depth of cylinder submergence was increased, the flow speed in the gap region between the upper surface of the cylinder and the free surface increased and formed a substantial jet flow. The general flow structure of the elliptic cylinder is similar to previous results for a circular cylinder submerged near to a free surface. However, the width of the wake and the angle of downward deflection of the shear layer developed from the lower surface of the elliptic cylinder are smaller tan those for a circular cylinder.

  • In the current flow visualization studies, the role of non-Newtonian characteristics (such as shearra to dependent viscosity and viscoelasticity ) on flow behavior across the sudden ex- pansion step in a circular pipe as a model for blood flow experiments is investigated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The expansion ratios tested are 2.000 and 2.667 and the range of the Reynolds number covered in the current flow visualization tests are 10~35, 000 based on the inlet. diameter. The reattachment longuEs for the viscoelastic fluids in the lami- nar flow regime are found to be much shorter than those for the Newtonian fluid. In addition it decreases significantly with increasing concentration of viscoelastic fluids at the same Reynolds number. However, in the turbulent flow regime, the reattachment length for the viscoelastic fluids Is two or three times longer than those for water, and gradually increases with increasing concentration of viscoelastic solutions, resulting In 25 and 28 step-height dis- tances for 500 and 1, 000 lpm ployacrylamide solutions, respectively. This may be due to the fact that the elasticity in pobacrylamide solutions suppresses the eddy motion and controls separation and reattachment behavior in the sudden expansion pips flow.
