Dissolved air flotation (DAF), in which suspended solids are removed from water by means of micro-size air bubbles raising slowly up in water and lifting solids from water (smaller than those) attached onto the micro-bubbles as well as those (larger than solids) being attached on these, have been used in water and wastewater since 1920s. The dissolved air flotation technology was originally based on the laminar flow conditions prevailing in water to be treated, but the latest development in that technology has led now to a situation, in which the flow conditions may also be turbulent ones in the modem dissolved air flotation units. Despite of that, the flotation phenomenon used in this unit operation for removal suspended solids from water or wastewater is still the same.

As for two-phase flow in rectangular channels, the flow regimes especially like churn-turbulent and annular flow are significant for the physical problem like Countercurrent Flow Limitation (CCFL). In this study, the rectangular channels with cross-sections of 4 × 66 mm, 6 × 66 mm, 8 × 66 mm are adopted to investigate the flow regimes of air-water vertical upward two phase flow under adiabatic condition. The gas and liquid superficial velocities are 0 ≤ jg ≤ 20m/s and 0.25 ≤ jf ≤ 3m/s respectively which covering bubbly to annular flow. The flow regimes are identified by random forest algorithm and the flow regime maps are obtained. As the results, the transitional void fraction from slug to churn turbulent flow fluctuate from 0.47 to 0.58 which is significantly affected by the dimensional size of channel and flow rate. Besides, the void fraction at transitional points from churn-turbulent (slug) to annular flow are 0.66-0.67, which are independent with the gap size. Furthermore, a new criteria of slug to churn-turbulent flow is established in this study. In addition, by introducing the interfacial force model, the criteria of churn-turbulent (slug) flow to annular flow is verified.

Current expertise in air-water turbulent flows on stepped chutes is limited to laboratory experiments at low to moderate Reynolds numbers on flat horizontal steps. In this study, highly turbulent air-water flows skimming down a large-size stepped chute were systematically investigated with a $22^{\circ}$ slope (Fig. 1). Turbulence manipulation was conducted using vanes or longitudinal ribs to enhance interactions between skimming flows and cavity recirculating regions (Fig. 2). Systematic experiments were performed with seven configurations. The results demonstrated the strong influence of vanes on the air-water flow. An increase in flow resistance was observed consistently with maximum flow resistance achieved with vanes placed in a zigzag pattern.
The turbulent flow in reactor pressure vessel (RPV) of pressurized water reactor (PWR) is important for the flow rate distribution at core inlet. Thus, it is vital to study the turbulent flow phenomena in RPV. However, the complicated fluid channel consisted of inner structures of RPV will block or refract the laser sheet of particle image velocimetry (PIV). In this work, the matched index of refraction (MIR) of sodium iodide (NaI) solution and acrylic was applied to support optical path for flow field measurements by PIV in the 1/10th scaled-down RPV model. The experimental results show detailed velocity field at different locations inside the scaled-down RPV model. Some interesting phenomena are obtained, including the non-negligible counterflow at the corner of nozzle edge, the high downward flowing stream in downcomer, large vortices above vortex suppression plate in lower plenum. And the intensity of counterflow and the strength of vortices increase as inlet flow rate increasing. Finally, the case of asymmetry flow was also studied. The turbulent flow has different pattern compared with the case of symmetrical inlet flow rate, which may affect the uniformity of flow distribution at the core inlet.

Hydraulic engineers and scientists working on river restoration recognize the need for a deeper understanding of natural streams as a complex and dynamic system, which involves not only abiotic elements(flow, sediments) but also biotic components. From this point of view, the role played by riverine vegetation dynamics and flow conditions becomes essential. Hydro-mechanic interaction between flow and flexible plants covering a river bed is studied in this paper and some previous works are discussed. Measurements of turbulence and flow resistance in vegetated open channel were performed using rigid and flexible tube. Measuring detailed turbulent velocity profiles within and above submerged and flexible stems allowed to distinguish different turbulent regimes. Some interesting relationships were obtained between the velocity field and the deflected height of the plants, such as a reduced drag coefficient in the flexible stems. Turbulent intensities and Reynolds stresses were measured showing two different regions : above and inside the vegetation domain. In flexible vegetated open channel, the maximum values of turbulent intensities and Reynolds stresses appear above the top of canopy. Method to predict a flow resistance in flexible vegetated open channel is developed by modifying an analytical model proposed by Klopstra et al. (1997). Calculated velocity profiles and roughness values correspond well with flume experiments. These confirm the applicability of the presented model for open channel with flexible vegetation. The new method will be verified in the real vegetated conditions in the near future. After these verifications, the new method should be applied for nature rehabilitation projects such as river restorations.

Until now, research reports that it is difficult for brokenup floc after coagulation to reaggregate and settling efficiency of reaggregated floc is relatively low have dominated in water treatment process. In contrast, from recent study conducted by the French researcher, because the density of the reaggregated floc was higher than the previous floc, the settling efficiency of reaggregated floc increased. In this study, 15 times wet test were carried out and the removal efficiency of reagrregated floc was considerably increased. Moreover, this result was explained using the turbulent model for the flow occurred around the floc. Consequently, in the case of suitable hydrodynamic condition for the reaggregation, the characteristics of the reaggregated floc was changed into the favorable condition for improvement of settling efficiency. Also, the most important factor for reaggregation of floc was governed by hydrodynamic shear stress.
The relevance of turbulent mixing in estuarine numerical models for stratified two-layer shallow water flows is analysed in this paper. A one-dimensional numerical model was developed for this purpose by extending an immiscible two-layer model with an additional source term, which accounts for turbulent mixing effects, namely the entrainment of fluid from the lower to the upper layer. The entrainment rate is quantified by an empirical equation as a function of the bulk Richardson number. A finite volume method based on an approximated Roe solver was used to solve the governing coupled system of partial differential equations. A comparison of numerical results with and without entrainment is presented to illustrate the influence of entrainment on both the salt-water intrusion length and lower layer dynamics. Furthermore, one example is given to demonstrate how entrainment terms may help to stabilize the numerical scheme and prevent a possible loss of hyperbolicity. Finally, the model with entrainment is validated by comparing the numerical results to field measurements.
Large eddy simulation of vortexing flow of molten steel in the continuous casting mold with and without DC magnetic field was conducted. The influence of the position of magnetic field to the residence time and depth of the vortex was analyzed. The mechanism of the influence of magnetic field to the vortexing flow was found. The computational results show that the vortexing flow is the result of shearing of the two un-symmetric surface flows from the mold narrow faces when they meet adjacent to the SEN; the un-symmetric flow for turbulent vortex is caused by turbulent energy of the fluid and that for biased vortex is caused by biased flow and the turbulent energy of fluid; with the moving of the magnetic field from the centerline of the outlet of the SEN to the free surface, the surface velocity is decreased gradually and the depth of the turbulent vortex and the biased vortex is decreased, the residence time is increased with the magnetic field moves from DL=120mm to DL=60mm and then decreased; the turbulent vortex and the biased vortex can be eliminated when the magnetic field is located at the free surface.

The predictions of the COBRA-IV-I code with the modified turbulent mixing and void drift models have been compared with the diabatic two-phase flow data on equilibrium quality. The turbulent mixing model based on an equal mass exchange of the existing COBRA-IV-I code has been modified to that based on an equal volume exchange between adjacent subchannels, and a void drift model has been newly incorporated in the code. To evaluate the performance of the equal volume exchange turbulent mixing model and the effects of the void drift model, the diabatic steam-water two-phase flow data obtained for the 9-rod bundle test under the typical operating conditions of the boiling water reactor(BWR) conducted by the General Electric (GE) were analyzed by the modified COBRA-IV-I code. The analysis indicates that the equal volume exchange turbulent mixing model with void drift predicts the observed two-phase flow data trends better than the equal mass exchange model, and to predict the correct data trends a more physically based void drift model need to be developed.
Turbulent drag reduction (DR) efficiency of water soluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with two different molecular weights was studied as a function of polymer concentration and temperature in a turbulent flow produced via a rotating disk system. Its mechanical degradation behavior as a function of time in a turbulent flow was also analyzed using both a simple exponential decay function and a fractional exponential decay equation. The fractional exponential decay equation was found to fit the experimental data better than the simple exponential decay function. Its thermal degradation further exhibited that the susceptibility of PEO to degradation increases dramatically with increasing temperature.
