The flow characteristics on the centerline in case of free jet, sudden expansion jet and impinging jet have been investigated. Centerline flow behaviors and similaritis with mean velocities, turbulent intensities, shear stresses, isotropic structures and turbulent kinetic energies on the streamwise direction were looked into and compared with three jets, The results show that mean velocities have represented potential core and decayed with similar gradients. The turbulent intensities and shear stresses were presented peak values in the self-preserving region, and then they were in decay. Aeolotropy in the initial region were possible returned to isotropy patterns with asymptotic approach in the downstream region. It has been found that the turbulent kinetic energies for the three cases of jet existed in the similarity and they coincided with Gaussian profile.

The drag reduction is the phenomenon that occurs only when the shear stress from the wall of pipe is beyond the critical point. The drag reduction increase as the molecular weight, concentration of the polymer and Reynolds number increase, but it is limited by Virk's maximum drag reduction asymptote. Because of the strong shear force for the polymer on the turbulent flow, the molecular weight and the drag reduction do not decrease. Such mechanical degradation of the polymer occurs in all polymer solvent systems. This paper is to identify and develop high performance polymer additives for fluid transportations with the benefits of turbulent drag reduction. In addition, drag reduction in vertical flow by measuring the pressure drop and local void fraction on vertical-up flow of close system is evaluated.

An experimental study on the structure of a separated shear layer downstream of the backward-facing step has been performed by examining mean flow and turbulent quantities in terms of free stream turbulence. When free stream turbulence exists, the entrainment rate of the separated shear layer and the flow rate in the recirculation region are enhanced, resulting in shorter reattachment length. The production and diffusion terms in the turbulent kinetic energy balance are shown to increase more than the dissipation term does. Rapid decrease of the pressure-strain term in the shear stress balance implies the enhancement of the three-dimensional motion by free stream turbulence.

An experimental study is made of turbulent shear flows in a nearly two-dimensional 90.deg. curved duct by using the hot-wire anemometer. The Reynolds normal and shear stresses, triple velocity products, integral length scales, Taylor micro length scales and dissipation length scales are measured and analyzed. For a positive shear at the inlet, the afore-mentioned turbulence quantities are all suppressed. However, when the inlet shear flow is negative, they are augmented, i.e., the convex curvature suppresses the turbulence whereas the concave curvature augments it. It is found that the curvature effects are rather sensitive to the triple velocity products than the Reynolds stresses. The evolution of turbulence under the curvature with the different shear conditions is well described by the modified curvature parameter S' and the non-dimensional development time ${\tau}$.'

Fully developed turbulent flow in a circular pipe and laminar boundary layer on a flat plate were measured to develop a measuring technique of the wall sheat stress using Preston tubes. New empirical formulas to extimate displacement factor of Preston tube obtained through the present study. The displacement factor for turbulent flow was considerably different from that for the laminar flow. Measured wall shear stress was not pretty dependent on the displacement factor for Preston tubes in the inertia sublayer of turbulent boundary layer, however was considerably affected in the laminar boundary layer. Measuring error of skin friction using the CPM technique was 3% for turbulent and 5% for thin laminar boundary layers.
In this study, a computational method for wall shear stress combined with an implicit direct-forcing immersed boundary method is presented. Near the immersed boundaries, the sub-grid stress is determined by a wall model in which the wall shear stress is directly calculated from the Lagrangian force on the immersed boundary. A coupling mathematical model of the transition process for a model Francis turbine comprising turbulent flow and rotating rigid guide vanes is established. The spatiotemporal distributions of pressure, velocity, vorticity and turbulent quantity are gained with the transient process; the drag and lift coefficients as well as other forces (moments) are also obtained as functions of the attack angle. At the same time, analysis is conducted of the characteristics of pressure pulsation, velocity stripes and vortex structure at some key parts of flowing passage. The coupling relations among the turbulent flow, the dynamical force (moment) response of blade and the rotating of guide vane are also obtained.
This paper reports the numerical calculations of uniform turbulent shear flow around a square cylinder. The predictions are obtained by solving the two-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations in a finite volume technique. The turbulent fluctuations are simulated by the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and one of its variant which takes care of the realizability constraint in order to suppress the excessive generation of turbulence in a stagnation condition. It has been found that the Strouhal number and the mean drag coefficient are almost unaffected by the shear parameter but the mean lift coefficient is increased. The present predictions are compared with available experimental data.
A numerical model for unsteady dispersion of horizontal line source in turbulent shear flow is developed. A fractional step finite difference method is used which splits the unsteady two-dimensional advective diffusion equation into the longitudinal advection and the vertical diffusion equations, and solves them alternately for half time intervals by the Holly-Preissmann scheme and the Crank-Nicholson scheme, respectively. The developed numerical model is verified using a semi-analytic solution for steady dispersion in turbulent shear flow. Dispersion of an instantaneous plane source in turbulent shear flow is analyzed using the model. The degree of mixing at the same dimensionless time is almost the same regardless of the friction factor, and the travel distance required to reach a certain degree of mixing is inversely proportional to the square root of the friction factor.

A large eddy simulation (LES) is performed for turbulent pipe flow. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The effects of grid fineness which can be well prediction of turbulent behavior in near wall region is investigated. The subgrid scale turbulent models are applied and validated emphasis is placed on the flow details of turbulent pipe flow The calculated Reynolds number is 360 based on the wall shear velocity and the inlet pipe diameter. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing with the DNS data of turbulent pipe flow Performed by Eggels et al. The agreement of LES with DNS data is shown to be satisfactory. The proper grid fineness of the well prediction of turbulent pipe flow is suggested and the turbulent behavior is analyzed by depict the contour plot of fluctuating velocity components.
In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent oscillatory flow in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct are investigated experimentally. In order to measure wall shear stress and pressure distributions, experimental studies for air flow are conducted in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct by using the LDV system with the data acquisition and the processing system. The wall shear stress measuring point bend angle of the $150^{\circ}$ and pressure distribution of the inlet (${\phi}=0^{\circ}$) to the outlet (${\phi}=180^{\circ}$) at $10^{\circ}$ intervals of the duct. The results obtained from the experimentation are summarized as follows: A wall shear stress value in an inner wall is larger than that in an outer wall, except for the phase angle (${\omega}t/{\pi}/6$) of 3, because of the intensity of secondary flow. The pressure distributions are the largest in accelerating and decelerating regions at the bend angle(${\phi}$) of $90^{\circ}$ and pressure difference of inner and outer walls is the largest before and after the ${\phi}=90^{\circ}$.
