A 2-frame PTV (particle tracking velocimetry) system using the concept of match probability between two consequent image frames has been developed to obtain instantaneous velocity fields. The overall 2-frame PTV system including image pre-processing, tracking algorithm and post-processing routine was implemented to apply to real flows. The developed 2-frame PTV system has several advantages such as high recovery ratio of velocity vectors, low error ratio and small computational time compared with the conventional 4-frame PTV and the FFT-based cross-correlation PIV technique. The 2-frame PTV system was applied to a turbulent channel flow over a rectangular block to check its reliability and usefulness. Total 96 sequential image frames have been captured and processed to get both mean and fluctuating velocity vector fields over the recirculating region. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles were well agreed with hte LDV measurements in the separated region behind the block. Time-averaged reattachment length is about 6.3 times of the block height.

Numerical study of a confined, swirling, isothermal and spray-combusting flows has been presented. The pressure-velocity coupling in the Eulerian gas-phase equation is handled by the improved PISO algorithm. The droplet dispersion by turbulence is introduced by a Stochastic Separated Flow(SSF) model. The k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model and the eddy dissipation model are employed to account for turbulence-combustion interaction. The detailed comparison with experimental data has been made for the isothermal jet swirling flows and the nearly monodisperse spray-combusting flow in the swirl combustor.

The flow fields including velocities, turbulence intensities, Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy were investigated using particle image velocimetry(PIV) to study the flow characteristics around two square cylinders in a tandem arrangement. The experiments were carried out in the range of the spacing from 1.0 to 4.0 widths of cylinder, Reynolds number of 5.3$\times$10$^{3}$ and 1.6$\times$10$^{4}$ respectively. Discontinuous jumping at the drag coefficient variation was found for two cylinders simultaneously when the spacing between two cylinders is varied. This phenomenon is attributed to a sudden change of the flow pattern which depends on the reattachment of the shear layer separated from the upstream cylinder. Near such a critical spacing, the changes of the flow fields as well as the effect of Reynolds number were studied in detail.
Drilling mud was used once in the step of separating the gas and powder they were transported to a surge tank. At that time, the fine powder, such as dust that is not separated from the gas, is included in the gas that was separated from the mud. The fine particles of the powder are collected to increase the density of the powder and prevent air pollution. To remove particles from air or another gas, a cyclone-type separator generally can be used with the principles of vortex separation without using a filter system. In this study, we conducted numerical simulations of air-particle flow consisting of two components in a cyclone separator in a mud handling system to investigate the characteristics of turbulent vortical flow and to evaluate the collection efficiency using the commercial software, STAR-CCM+. First, the single-phase air flow was simulated and validated through the comparison with experiments (Boysan et al., 1983) and other CFD simulation results (Slack et al., 2000). Then, based on one-way coupling simulation for air and powder particles, the multi-phase flow was simulated, and the collection efficiency for various sizes of particles was compared with the experimental and theoretical results.

The boundary layer developing over the suction surface of a first-stage turbine blade for power generation has been investigated in this study. For three locations selected in the region where local thermal load changes dramatically, mean velocity, turbulence intensity, and one-dimensional energy spectrum are measured with a hot-wire anemometer. The results show that the suction-surface boundary layer suffers a transition from a laminar flow to a turbulent one. This transition is confirmed to be a "separated-flow transition", which usually occurs in the shear layer over a separation bubble. The local minimum thermal load on the suction surface is found at the initiation point of the transition, whereas the local maximum thermal load is observed at the location of very high near-wall turbulence intensity after the transition process. Frequency characteristics of turbulent kinetic energy before and after the transition are understood clearly from the energy spectrum data.

The characteristics of flow on unventilated dual jets was experimentally investigated. The two nozzles each with an aspect ratio of 20 were separated by 6 nozzle widths. Reynolds number based on nozzle width was set to 5,000 by nozzle exit velocity. All measurements were made over a range of nozzle-to-nozzle angles from $0^{\circ}$ to $25^{\circ}$. The particle image velocimetry and pressure transducer were employed to measure turbulent velocity components and mean static pressure, respectively. It was shown that a recirculation zone with sub-atmospheric static pressure was bounded by the inner shear layers of the individual jets and the nozzles plated. As nozzle-to-nozzle inclined angles were decreased, it was found that the spanwise turbulent intensity is greater than the streamwise turbulent intensity in the merging region. In the combined region, the velocity of dual jets agree well with that of single jet, but the turbulence intensity of dual jets not agree with that of single jet.
The presence of a layer of vegetation which is relevant in river engineering or coastal engineering can modify the overall flow resistance, turbulent characteristics of flow. The patch of vegetation can be modelled and studied in a simple porous cylinder by previous researchers. Fully three dimensional Large Eddy Simulation is conducted in flow past a porous cylinder with a solid volume fraction (SVF) 0f 20%. The porous cylinder of diameter D contains 89 smaller cylinders which diameter is 0.048D in a regular staggered way. Reynolds number based on porous cylinder diameter D and the bulk velocity is 10,000. The large scale shedding is qualitatively similar to the one observed in the non-porous case (SVF=100%). The difference in the dynamics of the separated shear layer and the streamwise flow penetrating through the porous cylinder are compared with those in the non-porous cylinder. In particular, the wake billows form a larger distance from the back of the porous cylinder.

The purpose of this study is to develop a method for predicting the aerodynamic performance of the low speed airfoils in the 2-dimensional, steady and viscous flow. For this study, the airfoil geometry is specified by adopting the longest chord line system and by considering local surface curvature. In case of the inviscid incompressible flow, the analysis is accomplished by the linearly varying strength vortex panel method and the Karman-Tsien correction law is applied for the inviscid compressible flow analysis. The Goradia integral method is adopted for the boundary layer analysis of the laminar and turbulent flows. Viscous and inviscid solutions are converged by the Lockheed iterative calculating method using the equivalent airfoil geometry. The analysis of the separated flow is performed using the Dvorak and Maskew's method as the basic method. The wake effect is also considered by expressing its geometry using the formula of Summey and Smith when no separation occurs. The computational efficiency is verified by comparing the computational results with experimental data and by the shorter execution time.

The effect of periodic blowing and suction of upstream flow on the separated shear flow behind the vertical fence was experimentally investigated. The fence was submerged in the turbulent shear flow and DPIV method was used to measure the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence. Periodic blowing and suction flow was precisely generated by the syringe pump. Spanwise nozzle made 2D planar periodic jet flow in front of the fence and the effect of frequency and maximum jet velocity was studied. From the results, the reattachment length can be reduced by 60% of uncontrolled fence case under the control.

An experimental study was made of a large-scale vortical structure over a backward-facing step. The Reynolds number based on the step height was R $e_{H}$ =33,000. To recognize the large-scale vortex, three components of velocity were measured. The measurements were performed in the recirculation zone (x/H=4.0) and the reattachment zone(x/H=7.5). To measure the wall pressure fluctuations in a turbulent flow over a backward-facing step, a 32-channel microphone array was installed beneath the wall in the streamwise and spanwise directions. From the measured pressure field, the size of large-scale vortex was obtained. As a detailed study, a conditionally-averaging technique was employed to characterize the coherent structure of the large-scale vortex. To see the relationship between the flow field and the relevant spatial mode of the pressure field, the spatial box filtering (SBF) was examined. A cross-correlation between velocity and pressure fluctuations was performed to identify the structure and the length scale of the large-scale vortex.x.
