The instantaneous and ensemble averaged flow characteristics of a round jet issuing normally into a crossflow was studied using a flow visualization technique and Particle Image Velocimetry measurements. Experiments were performed at a jet-to-crossflow velocity ratio, 3.3, and two Reynolds numbers, 1050 and 2100, based on crossflow velocity and jet diameter. Instantaneous laser tomographic images of the vertical center plane of the crossflow jet showed that there exist very different natures in the flow structures of the near field jet even though the velocity ratio is the same. It was found that the shear layer becomes much thicker when the Reynolds number is 2100 due to the strong entrainment of the inviscid fluid by turbulent interaction between the jet and crossflow. The mean and second order statistics were calculated by ensemble averaging over 1000 realizations of instantaneous velocity fields. The detail characteristics of mean flow field, stream wise and vertical r.m.s. velocity fluctuations, and Reynolds shear stress distributions were presented. The new PlV results were compared with those from previous experimental and LES studies.
An experimental investigation on heat transfer characteristics of two-dimensional heated blocks using a confined impinging slot jet has been performed. The effect of jet Reynolds number(Re=3900, 5800, 9700), streamwise block spacing(p/w=0.5, 1, 1.5) and dimensionless nozzle to block distance(H/B=1, 2, 4, 6) have been examined with five isothermally heated blocks. With the measurement of jet mean velocity and turbulence intensity distributions at nozzle exit, initially turbulent regimes, are classified. To clarify local heat transfer characteristics, naphthalene sublimation technique as used. The maximum Nusselt number at the stagnation point for the jet Reynolds number is occurred at H/B=4. Besides, the local and a average heat transfer of heated blocks increase with decreasing streamwise block spacing and increasing jet Reynolds number.

This paper describes partial turbulence simulation and validation of the aerodynamic pressures on building models for an open-jet small-scale 12-Fan Wall of Wind (WOW) facility against their counterparts in a boundary-layer wind tunnel. The wind characteristics pertained to the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) mean wind speed profile and turbulent fluctuations simulated in the facility. Both in the wind tunnel and the small-scale 12-Fan WOW these wind characteristics were produced by using spires and roughness elements. It is emphasized in the paper that proper spectral density parameterization is required to simulate turbulent fluctuations correctly. Partial turbulence considering only high frequency part of the turbulent fluctuations spectrum was simulated in the small-scale 12-Fan WOW. For the validation of aerodynamic pressures a series of tests were conducted in both wind tunnel and the small-scale 12-fan WOW facilities on low-rise buildings including two gable roof and two hip roof buildings with two different slopes. Testing was performed to investigate the mean and peak pressure coefficients at various locations on the roofs including near the corners, edges, ridge and hip lines. The pressure coefficients comparisons showed that open-jet testing facility flows with partial simulations of ABL spectrum are capable of inducing pressures on low-rise buildings that reasonably agree with their boundary-layer wind tunnel counterparts.
The conditional moment closure formulation considering the molecular and turbulent diffusion is derived. A simplified solution procedure is proposed to reduce the computational burden due to the increased dimensionality of the conditionally averaged variables. A conditionally averaged variable is expressed as a linear weighted average of the two extremes, 'no reaction' and 'equilibrium' states. The modified elliptic-type conditional moment closure formulation is implemented to simulate a two dimensional nonpremixed mixing layer reacting flow. Results show good agreement for the conditional averages of the species concentration in Bilger et al.
This study is concerned with the critical evaluation of predicative capability of a k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model using the Renormalization Group(RNG) theory. The present numerical model for solution of the Navier-Stokes System is based on the modified PISO algorithms. Computations have been performed with the RNG-based K-$\varepsilon$ model for the two-dimensional flow over a backward-facing step, a confined coaxial jet, and a swirling flow in a swirl combustor. Numerical results are compared with experimental data in terms of mean flow velocities, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulent stresses. Numerical results clearly indicate that the RNG-based K-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model shows a significant improvement over a standard K-$\varepsilon$ model in predicting the turbulent flows with flow separation and swirl.

The turbulent properties in a mixed statistically stationary flow were investigated experimentally by a pseudo stereoscopic PIV. In order to validate the experimental results, the profiles of the turbulent kinetic energy were evaluated with the flow features. A mechanical agitator having 6 blades was installed at the bottom of the mixing tank (D=60cm, H=60cm). The agitator was rotated with 80rpm clockwise and counter-clockwise. For the measurements, three cameras were used and all were synchronized. The images captured by one of the three cameras was used for the measurement of rotational speed, and the images captured by the other two cameras were used to measure three dimensional components of velocity vectors. All vectors captured at the same rotational angle were phase averaged to construct three-dimensional vector fields to reconstruct the spatial distribution of the flow properties. It was seen that the jet scrolling along the tank was the main source of mixing.
The present study numerically investigate the detailed structure of the syngas diffusion flames. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction, the transient flamelet model has been applied to simulate the combustion processes and $NO_X$ formation in the syngas turbulent nonpremixed flames. The single mixture fraction formulation is extended to account for the effects of the secondary inlet mixture. Computations are the wide range of syngas compositions and oxidizer dilutions. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the effects of syngas composition and oxidizer dilution on the structure of the syngas-air and syngas-oxygen turbulent nonpremixed flames.
The conditional moment closure(CMC) model has been implemented in context with the unstructured-grid finite-volume method which efficiently handle the physically and geometrically complex turbulent reacting flows. The validation cases include a turbulent nonpremixed $CO/H_2/N_2$ Jet flame and a turbulent nonpremixed $H_2/CO$ flame stabilized on an axisymmetric bluff-body burner. In terms of mean flame field, minor species and NO formation, numerical results has the overall agreement with expermental data. The detailed discussion has been made for the turbulence-chemistry interaction and NOx formation characteristics as well as the comparative performance for CMC and flamelet model.
The present study has numerically investigated the effects of the fuel-side nitrogen dilution on the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent syngas nonpremixed flames. Numerical results indicate that for highly diluted case, the flame structure is dominantly influenced by the turbulence-chemistry interaction and marginally modified by the radiation effect. On the other hand, no-dilution case with the longer flight time and the relatively intermediate scalar dissipation rate is influenced strongly by the radiative cooling as well as moderately by the turbulence-chemistry interaction.
