In this study, the turbulent free surface around KVLCC1 employed in the circular motion test simulation is numerically calculated using a commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code, FLUENT. Also, hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments around a ship model are calculated during the steady turning. Numerical simulations of the turbulent flows with free surface around KVLCC1 have been carried out by use of RANS equation based on calculation of hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments exerted upon the ship hull. Wave elevation is simulated by using the VOF method. VOF method is known as one of the most effective numerical techniques handling two-fluid domains of different density simultaneously. Boundary layer thickness and wake field are changed various yaw velocities of ship model during the steady turning. The calculated hydrodynamic forces are compared with those obtained by model tests.
The two-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous flow behind rectangular bluff bodies between two parallel plates was analyzed numerically. The steady state flow and the vortex flow behind rectangular bluff bodies in the channel were investigated for two regimes i.e., the laminar(Re = 100, 300, 500) and the turbulent flows(Re = 10⁴∼10/sup 6/). The vortex shedding was generated by a physical disturbance(6%) numerically imposed at the rear of the bluff bodies for a short time. It was observed that the perturbed flow became periodic after a transient period. And in the case of unsteady inflow, the sinusoidal pulsatile flow was applied as the inlet condition in the turbulent flow of Reynolds number of 1.0×10/sup 5/. FLUENT code was employed to solve the problems. The power-law scheme was used to get stable linearized equations and the PISO algorithm was applied to finding the solution of them.

An experimental study has been performed on the flow over a rotating disk, where the diameter of the disk is 500 mm and the maximum vertical deviation of the upper surface is $50 \mu{m}$ for the whole range of the angular velocity up to 3400 rpm. The flow visualization experiment for the wall jet flow induced by impinging circular jet is carried out using schlieren system and measurements are made by 3-hole and 5-hole pitot tubes. Schlieren photographs show that as the rotating speed increases the wall jet flow becomes more stable and the size of the largest eddies becomes smaller. Measurements for impinging jet flow on the stationary disk verify the accuracy of the present experiment, and those for free rotating disk flow display the existence of transition region from laminar to turbulent flows. Measurements for impinging jet flow on the rotating disk exhibit the interaction between the wall jet and the viscous pumping effect, which explains the decay in size of turbulent eddies illustrated by the schlieren photographs.

In this study, the characteristics of the three-dimensional turbulence flow in a rotating square sectioned 90.deg. bend were investigated by numerical simulation. And a dimensionless number, Coriolis force ratio, primarily subjected to the feature of the flow in the rotating 90.deg. bend was obtained as a result of one-dimensional theory. In the simulation study, low Reynolds number ASM developed by Kim(1991) in the square sectioned 180.deg. bend flow was modified in order to consider the rotational effects in the testing flows. In the near wall region of low Reynolds number, four turbulence models were employed and compared in order to find the most appropriate model for the analysis of the rotating 90.deg. bend flow. By comparison of the results with the experimental data, it is shown that low Reynolds number Algebraic Stress Model with rotating terms reflects most correctly the rotational effects. As the results of this study, centrifugal forces associated with the curvature of the bend and Coriolis forces and centripetal forces associated with the rotation affect directly both the mean motion and the turbulent fluctuations. Their actions on the mean flow are to induce a secondary motion while their effects on turbulence are to modify the pressure strain.

An experimental study on the flow over the axisymmetric backward-facing step was carried out. The purposes of the present study are to investigate the effect of the free stream turbulence intensity on the reattachment length and to understand the turbulence structure of the recirculating flows. Local mean and fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separated and reattaching axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over the wall of convex cylinder placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. As the free stream turbulence intensity increased, the reattachment length became shorter due to the enhanced mixing in the separated shear layer. It was also observed that the reverse flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy increase with increasing free stream turbulence intensity. Spectral data and flow visualization showed that low-frequency motions occur in the separated flow behind a backward-facing step. These motions have a significant effect on the time-averaged turbulence data.

A 2-dimensional temperature field measurement technique using PLIF (Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) was developed and it was applied to an axisymmetric buoyant jet. Rhodamine B was used as a fluorescent dye. Laser light sheet illuminated a two-dimensional cross section of the jet. The intensity variations of LIF signal from Rhodamine B molecules scattered by the laser light were captured with an optical filter and a CCD camera. The spatial variations of temperature field of buoyant jet were derived using the calibration data between the LIF signal and real temperature. The measured results show that the turbulent jet is more efficient in mixing compared to the transition and laminar jet flows. As the initial flow condition varies from laminar to turbulent flow, the entrainment from ambient fluid increases and temperature decay along the jet center axis becomes larger. In addition to the mean temperature field, the spatial distributions of temperature fluctuations were measured by the PLIF technique and the result shows the shear layer development from the jet nozzle exit.
The flow field around a high-speed train including cross-wind effects has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the inertial frame using the iterative time marching scheme. The governing equations are differenced with 1st-order accurate backward difference scheme for the time derivatives, 3th-order accurate QUICK scheme for the convective terms and 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme for the viscous terms. The Marker-and-Cell concept was applied to efficiently solve continuity equation, which is differenced with 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme. The 4th-order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A C-H type of elliptic grid system is generated around a high-speed train including ground. The Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model was implemented to simulate the turbulent flows. To validate the present procedure, the flow around a high speed train at constant yaw angle of $45^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ has been simulated. The simulation shows 3-D vortex generation in the lee corner. The flow separation is also observed around the rear of the train. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.

Numerical and experimental studies are presented for turbulent flows and heat transfer in annular channel with circumferential fins on the inner tube in a double pipe heat exchanger. Flow and heat transfer characteristics are periodically fully developed, and complex flow patterns are shown. Numerical calculations are executed by using modified TEACH-2E computer program based on the standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model. Mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and Reynolds stress distributions are measured with the hot wire anemometer. Static pressures on the outer wall of the pipe are measured for three pitch-height ratios and several Reynolds numbers. Numerical predictions generally show reasonable results in comparison with experimental results. When the pitch-height ratio is about 5.0 and other geometric parameters are fixed in this paper, maximum heat transfer is achieved. Reattaching flow patterns appeared in this region. As the pitch between fins is increased beyond 5.0, mean Nusselt numbers are decreased and the pressure drop through one pitch almost remains.

Fluid-Structure Interaction analysis of a circular cylinder surrounded by incompressible turbulent flow is presented. The fluid flow is modeled by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with large-eddy simulation for turbulent vortical flows. The circular cylinder is modeled as elastic continuum described by elasto-dynamic equation of motion. Finite element method based approach is utilized for unified formulation of fluid-structure interaction analysis. The magnitude and frequency of structural response is analysed in comparison to the driving fluid forces.

A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations has been carried out for double-circular-arc compressor cascades and the results are compared with available experimental data at various incidence angles. The 2-D and 3-D computational codes based on SIMPLE algorithm adopt pressure weighted interpolation method for non-staggered grid and hybrid scheme for the convective terms. Turbulence modeling is very important for prediction of cascade flows, which are extremely complex with separation and reattachment by adverse pressure gradient. Considering computation times, $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with wall function is used.
