In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent pulsating flow in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct were experimentally investigated. Experimental studies for air flows were conducted to measure axial velocity and wall shear stress distributions and entrance length in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct by using the LDV with the data acquisition and the processing system. The experiment was conducted in seven sections from the inlet (${\phi}=0^{\circ}$) to the outlet (${\phi}=180^{\circ}$) at $30^{\circ}$ intervals of the duct. The results obtained from the experimentation were summarized as follows ; (1) When the ratio of velocity amplitude ($A_1$) was less than one, there was hardly any velocity change in the section except near the wall and any change in axial velocity distributions along the phase. When the ratio of velocity amplitude ($A_1$) was 0.6, the change rate of velocity was slow. (2) Wall shear stress distributions of turbulent pulsating flow were similar to those of turbulent steady flow. The value of the wall shear stress became minimum in the inner wall aid gradually increased toward the outer wall where it became maximum. (3) The entrance length of turbulent pulsating flow reached near the region of bend angle of $90^{\circ}$, like that of turbulent steady flow. The entrance length was changed by the dimensionless angular frequency (${\omega}^+$).

The two dimensional PIV (particle image velocimetry) measurement technique is applied to water flow in a narrow cavitation tunnel. The nearly homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flows are generated by the honeycomb installed in the tunnel and visualized with a PIV technique. The velocities in the measurement plane at the tunnel centerline 184cm downward from the honeycomb were measured and calculated by an image correlation technique. The turbulent properties are evaluated and each term in the turbulent kinetic energy equation is calculated for the conditions with different internal pressures. Lowering the internal pressure gives an effect on the turbulent flow due to growing bubbles which are resolved in the water. The turbulent kinetic energy in the measurement plane is decayed much slower than those of other research results carried out with wind tunnels. With decreasing the tunnel internal pressures the turbulent intensities are increased about 1.5 times and the anisotropic tendency is also increased.
To describe the behavior of suspended-sediment particles in turbulent open-channel flows, the advection-diffusion equation or its simplified form has been used. Though this equation was derived upon several assumptions, only a few studies tried to evaluate the limit of the assumptions. The reason is that it is very difficult to measure turbulence in open-channel flows and to discriminate the velocities of water and sediment particles. The present study aims to measure the velocity profiles of water and sediment particles in open-channel flows by using PTV (Particle Tracking Velocimetry), a kind of PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry). The measured results showed that sediment particles moved slower than water tracers did in the outer region. In the present study, the amount of velocity-lag reached about $5\%$ of the mom flow velocity and the position of the maximum velocity-lag was $g/h\approx0.05\;(g^{+}=30\~50)$ The main cause of the velocity-lag of sediment particles seems that the sediment particles have larger density than water has. On the other hand, in the viscous sublayer, sediment particle has a larger velocity than water tracers. The reason of the inversion of velocity-lag may be due to the no-sleep condition of water at the solid boundaries.

The present study investigates in detail the combined effects of the Coriolis force and centrifugal force on the development of turbulent flows in a square-sectioned U-bend rotating about an axis parallel to the center of bend curvature. When a viscous fluid flows through a curved region of U-bend, two types of secondary flow occur. One is caused by the Coriolis force due to the rotation of U-bend and the other by the centrifugal force due to the curvature of U-bend. For positive rotation, where the rotation is in the same direction as that of the main flow, both the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force act radially outwards. Therefore, the flow structure is qualitatively similar to that observed in a stationary curved duct. On the other hand, under negative rotation, where these two forces act in opposite direction, more complex flow fields can be observed depending on the relative magnitudes of the forces. Under the condition that the value of Rossby number and curvature ratio is large, the flow field in a rotating U-bend can be represented by two dimensionless parameters : $K_{TC}$ =Re $\sfrac{1}{4}$√λand a body force ratio F=λ/Ro. Here, $K_{TC}$ has the same dynamical meaning as $K_{TC}$ =Re√λ for laminar flow.
It is well known that sediment particles introduced in open-channel turbulent flows change mean velocity profile, since Vanoni suggested the reduction of the Karman constant in 1946. However, how the sediment particles take such a role and what parameters would be changed have been debated up to now. Some researchers, on the other hand, have insisted that the constant would not be changed regardless of introducing sediment particles. The present study is a careful re-evaluation of the previous studies on this issue. The study revealed some questionable approaches or methods in the decision of the previous researches and found the reason why this issue has been debated for a long time. The result indicated that the Karman number is reduced by adding sediment particles, but the amount of reduction is much smaller than the previous researches insisted. Finally, the present study proposes a mechanism of the Karman number reduction due to sediment particles.

Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate various spectral estimators used in LDV signal processing. In order to simulate a particle arrival time statistics known as the doubly stochastic poisson process, an autoregressive vector model was adopted to construct a primary velocity field. The conditional Poisson process with a random rate parameter was generated through the rescaling time process using the mean value function. The direct transform based on random sampling sequences and the standard periodogram using periodically resampled data by the sample and hold interpolation were applied to obtain power spectral density functions. For low turbulent intensity flows, the direct transform with a constant Poisson intensity is in good agreement with the theoretical spectrum. The periodogram using the sample and hold sequences is better than the direct transform in the view of the stability and the weighting of the velocity bias for high data density flows. The high Reynolds stress and high fluctuation of the transverse velocity component affects the velocity bias which increases the distortion of spectral components in the direct transform.

This paper presents numerical results comparing the performance of the 2008 Wilcox $\mathcal{k}-{\omega}$ turbulence model to the one of the 1988 Wilcox $\mathcal{k}-{\omega}$ model for supersonic flows. A comparison with experimental data is offered for a shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction case and two ramp injector mixing cases. Furthermore, a comparison is performed with empirical correlations on the basis of skin friction for flow over a flat plate and shear layer growth for a free shear layer. It is found that the maximum injectant mass fraction of some ramp injector cases is better predicted using the 1988 Wilcox model. On the other hand, the 2008 model performs better in simulating shock-boundary layer cases.
A finite element code based on P2P1 tetra element has been developed for the large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flows around a complex geometry. Fractional 4-step algorithm is employed to obtain time accurate solution since it is less expensive than the integrated formulation, in which the velocity and pressure fields are solved at the same time. Crank-Nicolson method is used for second order temporal discretization and Galerkin method is adopted for spatial discretization. For very high Reynolds number flows, which would require a formidable number of nodes to resolve the flow field, SUPG (Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin) method is applied to the quadratic interpolation function for velocity variables, Noting that the calculation of intrinsic time scale is very complicated when using SUPG for quadratic tetra element of velocity variables, the present study uses a unique intrinsic time scale proposed by Codina et al. since it makes the present three-dimensional unstructured code much simpler in terms of implementing SUPG. In order to see the effect of numerical diffusion caused by using an upwind scheme (SUPG), those obtained from P2P1 Galerkin method and P2P1 Petrov-Galerkin approach are compared for the flow around a sphere at some Reynolds number. Smagorinsky model is adopted as subgrid scale models in the context of P2P1 finite element method. As a benchmark problem for code validation, turbulent flows around a sphere and a MIRA model have been studied at various Reynolds numbers.

Numerical simulations for channel flows with $Re_{\tau}$ = 180, 395 and 590 have been performed to investigate the hairpin packet formation process in wall-bounded turbulent flows. Using direct numerical simulation databases, the initial flow fields are given by the conditionally averaged flow field with the second quadrant event specified at the buffer layer. By tracking the initial vortex development, the change in the initial vortex to an ${\Omega}$-shaped vortex and th generation of a secondary hairpin vortex were found to occur with time scales based on the wall units. In addition, at the time when the initial vortex has grown to the channel center, the inclination angle of the hairpin vortex packet is approximately $12{\sim}14^{\circ}$, which is similar for all three Reynolds numbers. Finally, numerical simulations of the evolution of two adjacent hairpin vortices have been performed to examine the interaction between the adjacent vortex packets.

The suitable turbulence model is found to be required in the course of establishing a proper analysis methodology for thermal stripping phenomena which are shown in strong temperature variation area such as reactors and propulsion devices. Three different turbulence models of $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model, modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model, and full Reynolds stress(FRS) model, are applied to analyze unsteady turbulent flows with temperature variation. Three test cases are selected for verification. These are vertical jet flows with water and sodium, and parallel jet flow with sodium. Analysis yields the conclusion that 3-D computation with FRS betters others. However, modified modeling is required to improve its heat transfer characteristic analysis. Further analysis is performed to find momentum variation effects on temperature distribution. It is found that the momentum increase results increase of fluid mixing and magnitude of temperature variation.
