  • A large eddy simulation (LES) is performed for turbulent pipe flow. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The effects of grid fineness which can be well prediction of turbulent behavior in near wall region is investigated. The subgrid scale turbulent models are applied and validated emphasis is placed on the flow details of turbulent pipe flow The calculated Reynolds number is 360 based on the wall shear velocity and the inlet pipe diameter. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing with the DNS data of turbulent pipe flow Performed by Eggels et al. The agreement of LES with DNS data is shown to be satisfactory. The proper grid fineness of the well prediction of turbulent pipe flow is suggested and the turbulent behavior is analyzed by depict the contour plot of fluctuating velocity components.

  • Turbulent flow characteristics on the gap of two parallel channels are investigated using LES(large eddy simulation) approach. Two parallel channels have the same cross-section area and are connected by the narrow channel named the gap. Turbulent flow near the gap makes the flow pulsation along the streamwise direction of two channels. The flow condition is the Reynolds number of $2.5{\times}10^{-5}$. We compared the predicted results with the previous experimental results and presented the axial mean velocity, turbulent intensities, Reynolds shear stresses and turbulent kinetic energy.

  • A large-eddy simulation is performed for turbulent flow in a concentric annulus with the inner wall rotation at Re$\sub$Dh/=8900 for three rotation rates N=0.2145, 0.429 and 0.858. Main emphasis is placed on the inner wall rotation effect on near-wall turbulent structures. Near-wall turbulent structures close to the inner wall are scrutinized by computing the lower-order statistics. The anisotropy invariant map for the Reynolds stress tensor and the invariant function are illustrated to reveal the altered anisotropy in turbulent structure. Probability density functions of the splat/anti-splat process are explored to develop a sufficiently complete picture of the contributions of the flow events to turbulent production. The present numerical results show that the altered turbulent structures may be attributed to the centrifugal instability, which leads to the augmentation of sweep and ejection events.

  • The goal of the research is to evaluate the open source code of OpenFOAM for the use of nuclear plant flow simulation objectively. Of the various incompressible flow solvers, simpleFoam, pimpelFoam are then tested under three validated cases (backward facing step, flow over circular cylinder and turbulent round jet flow). For the evaluation of steady state incompressible laminar flow simulation, low reynolds number of backward facing step flow was solved by simpleFoam. The resultant of the reattached lengths turned out to be similar with the other experimental and simulation results. For transient flow simulation, flow over circular cylinder and turbulent round jet flow were solved by pimpleFoam. The simulation accuracy was evaluated by comparing the resultant flow patterns with the description of the characteristics of the flow over the circular cylinder. The quantitative accuracy was evaluated for no more than 85% by comparing it to the decaying constants of the turbulent round jet velocity.

  • The performance and applicability of FDS code is analyzed for flow simulation in railway tunnel. FDS has been built in NIST(USA) for simulation of fire-driven flow. RANS and DNS's results are compared with FDS's. AJL non-linear ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$[7,8] model is employed to calculate the turbulent flow for RANS. DNS data by Moser et al.[9] are used to prove the FDS's applicability in the near wall region. Parallel plate is used for simplified model of railway tunnel. Geometrical variables are non-dimensionalized by the height (H) of parallel plate. The length of streamwise direction is 50H and the length of spanwise direction is 5H. Selected Re numbers are 10,667 for turbulent flow and 133 for laminar low. The characteristics of turbulent boundary layer are introduced. AJL model's predictions of turbulent boundary layer are well agreed with DNS data. However, the near wall turbulent boundary layer is not well resolved by FDS code. Slip conditions are imposed on the wall but wall functions based on log-law are not employed by FDS. The heavily dense grid distribution in the near wall region is necessary to get correct flow behavior in this region for FDS.

  • Large eddy simulation of turbulent premixed flame in turbulent channel flow is studied by using G-equation. A flamelet model for the premixed flame is combined with a dynamic subgrid combustion model for the filtered propagation flame speed. The objective of this work is to investigate the validity of the dynamic subgrid G-equation model to a complex turbulent premixed flame. The effect of model parameters of the dynamic sub grid G-equation on the turbulent flame speed is investigated. In order to consider quenching of laminar flames on the wall, wall-quenching damping function is employed in this calculation. In the present study, a constant density turbulent channel flow is used. The calculation results are evaluated by comparing with the DNS results of Bruneaux et al.

  • Drag prediction is sought for the aifoil having laminar and turbulent flow characteristics with CFD code being unable to predict transition to turbulent flow. Laminar flow simulation presents some insight to the transition position. Separate simulations with laminar and turbulent flow and their combination estimate the drag of the airfoil containing laminar and turbulent flow characteristics.

  • A multidimensional simulation of turbulent flow and combustion with swirl in the cylinder of SI engine is implemented to clarify the effects of swirl. present simulation employs the ICED-ALE numerical technique, the skew-upwind difference scheme, a modified k_.epsilon. turbulence model, a combustion model of Arrhenius type and turbulence-mixing-control type. First, the calculations for swirling flow in an axisymmetric cylinder are carried out. The results are compared with the experimental data to validate the numerical analysis. Second, the calculations for intake, compression and combustion processes in an axisymmetric cylinder are performed. The effects of swirl on turbulent flow and combustion are examined through the parametric study of swirl number 0.0, 0.6, 1.2 and 2.4. As a result, it is numerically shown that the turbulent kinetic energy and the swirl velocity, which are produced during the intake process, affect the combustion process.

  • A large eddy simulation (LES) is performed for turbulent flow in a combustion device. The combustion device is simplified as a cylindrical chamber with sudden expansion. A flame holder is attached inside a cylindrical chamber in order to promote turbulent mixing and to accommodate flame stability. The turbulent sub-grid scale models are applied and validated. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation of turbulent model for the LES of complex geometry. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The calculated Reynolds number is 5000 based on the bulk velocity and the diameter of inlet pipe. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing with the LDV measurement data. The Smagorinsky model coefficients are estimated and the utility of dynamic SGS models are confirmed in the LES of complex geometry.

  • This paper investigates LES of turbulent combustion flow based on 2-scalar flamelet approach, where a G-equation and a conserved scalar equation simulate a propagation of premixed flame and a diffusion combustion process, respectively. The turbulent SGS modeling on these flamelet combustion approach is also researched. These LES models are applied to an industrial flows in a full scale gasturbine combustor with premixed and non-premixed flames. The numerical results predict the characteristics of experiment temperature profiles. Unsteady features of complex flames in combustor are also visualized.
