In general, an impeller of centrifugal turbomachinery is designed at isolated condition without considering the presence of a volute, but when the impeller is operating with its volute, the performance of impeller can be different. This is largely caused by the interaction between the impeller and volute flow fields. The magnitude of distortion is increased as the operating point is away from the design point and, as a result, the interaction between the impeller and volute is stronger. In the present calculation, the flow through the impeller is simulated using coarse grids. The flow within the impeller and the volute is naturally unsteady, but the flow is assumed to be steady across the interface between the volute and impeller flow fields. Under the assumption of steady three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow, the time averaged N-S equations involving standard k-$\epsilon$ turbulent model was solved by the F.V.M. The calculation results are compared with the experimental results obtained for an industrial fan by Sakai etc. and the Hood agreement is demonstrated. And the effects of the impeller-volute interaction are studied.

Drag reduction in polymer solutions is the phenomenon where by extremely dilute solutions of high molecular weight polymers exhibit frictional resistance to flow much lower than the pure solvent. This effect, largely unexplained as yet, has attracted the attention of polymer scientists and fluid flow specialists. Although applications are beginning to appear, the principle interest to data has been in attempting to relate the effect to the fluid mechanics of turbulent flow. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, and pool and boiling flow. But the research on drag reduction in two phase flow is not intensively investigated. Therefore, experimental investigations have been carried out to analyze the drag reduction produced by polymer addition in the single phase and two phase flow system. The objectives of the proposed investigation are primarily in identifying and developing high performance polymer additives for fluid transportations with the benefits of turbulent drag. Also we want to is to evaluate the drag reduction in horizontal flow by measuring pressure drop and mean velocity. Experimental results show higher drag reduction using co - polymer(A611P) then using polyacrylamide (PAAM) and faster degradation using PAAM than using A611P under the same superficial velocity.
The vortical structures in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) developed over a flat plate have been investigated experimentally. The flow conditions tested in this study were Re$_{\theta}$ = 3700, Re$_{\delta}$ = 11${\times}$105 and the shape factor H = 1.3. Instantaneous velocity fields in the streamwise-wall-normal planes were measured by using a dynamic PIV system. A trip-wire and sandpapers were placed behind the leading edge to promote the turbulent transition. 1000 velocity fields were obtained consecutively with a time interval of 1 millisecond. Streamwise u-velocity components were temporally averaged in the measuring plane. In addition, 2000 velocity fields were obtained randomly and ensemble-averaged to get the fully-developed turbulent characteristics. Profiles of the normalized u-component, turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stress were evaluated. The structures of spanwise vortices were extracted from the instantaneous velocity fields by determining the swirling strength, ${\lambda}_{ci}$. The wall-normalized locations of vortices were temporally averaged in the measuring plane with respect to their rotational direction. The correlations between the temporally averaged u and the temporally averaged $y^+$ of vortices were evaluated. For the case of positive vortices, the correlation is not significant. However, the negative vortices show a strong negative correlation. The y-location of negative vortices tends to increase, as the averaged u decreases and vice versa. These findings indicate that the number of negative vortices in the outer layer increases during the outward bursting events.
The characteristics of flow around a rotating propeller were investigated using PIV technique. For each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the flow around a propeller. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and the slipstream contraction in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate had large values at the locations of the tip and trailing vortices. The boundary layer developed along the ship hull bottom surface of the ship stern provides a strong turbulent shear layer, affecting the vortex structure in the propeller near-wake. As the flow develops in the downstream direction, the trailing vortices formed behind the propeller hub move upward slightly due to the presence of the hull wake and free surface. The turbulence intensity has large values around the tip and trailing vortices. As the wake moves downstream, the strength of the vorticity diminishes and the turbulence intensity increases due to turbulent diffusion and active mixing between the tip vortices and adjacent wake flow.

Indoor ozone has received attention because of its well-documented adverse effects on health. In addition to the inherently harmful effects of ozone, it can also initiate a series of reactions that generate potentially irritating oxidation products, including free radicals, aldehydes, organic acids and secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Especially, ozone reacts actively with terpene. The overarching goal of this work was to better understand ozone and terpene distributions within rooms. Towards this end, the paper has two parts. The first describes the development of a cylindrical test chamber that can be used to obtain the second order rate constant $(k_b)$ for the bi-molecular chemical reaction of ozone and terpene in the air phase. The second consists of model room experiments coupled with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of the experimental scenarios to obtain ozone and terpene distributions in various turbulent flow fields. The results of CFD predictions were in reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements.

A 2-frame PTV (particle tracking velocimetry) system using the concept of match probability between two consequent image frames has been developed to obtain instantaneous velocity fields. The overall 2-frame PTV system including image pre-processing, tracking algorithm and post-processing routine was implemented to apply to real flows. The developed 2-frame PTV system has several advantages such as high recovery ratio of velocity vectors, low error ratio and small computational time compared with the conventional 4-frame PTV and the FFT-based cross-correlation PIV technique. The 2-frame PTV system was applied to a turbulent channel flow over a rectangular block to check its reliability and usefulness. Total 96 sequential image frames have been captured and processed to get both mean and fluctuating velocity vector fields over the recirculating region. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles were well agreed with hte LDV measurements in the separated region behind the block. Time-averaged reattachment length is about 6.3 times of the block height.

Simultaneous measurement with PLIF(Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence) and Stereo-PIV(Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry) was performed to investigate the structural characteristics of flow field in Rushton Turbine Mixer. Instantaneous 3D velocity fields are measured by two 2K${\times}$2K CCD cameras focused on an object plane with the angular displacement methods while the concentration fields are obtained through the measurement of the fluorescence intensity of Rhodamine B tracer excited by the second pulse of Nd:Yag laser light. Image distortion due to the camera view-angle is compensated by a mapping function. Finally, the spatial structures of turbulent flow around Rushton turbine were identified by the calculation of synchronized data of the velocity field and concentration field.
Transport of a scalar quantity, such as chemical concentration or temperature, is important in many engineering applications and environmental flows. Here we report on results obtained from the large eddy simulations of flow and concentration fields inside the tank performed using a spectral multi-domain technique. The computations were driven by specifying the impeller-induced flow at the blade tip radius (Yoon et al. $^{(1)}$). This study focused on the concentration development at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank operated under turbulent conditions. The main objective of the work presented here is to study the large-scale mixing structure at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank by using the large eddy simulation. The time sequence of concentration and flow fields shows the flow dependency of the concentration development. The presence of spatial inhomogenieties is detailed by observing the time variation of local concentration at different positions.

Simultaneous measurements of turbulent velocity and concentration field in a stirred mixer tank are carried out by using PIV/LIF technique. Instantaneous velocity fields are measured with a 1K$\times$1K CCD camera adopting the frame straddle method while the concentration fields are obtained by measuring the fluorescence intensity of Rhodamine B tracer excited by the second pulse of Nd:Yag laser light. Image distortion due to the camera view-angle is compensated by a mapping function. It is found that the general features of the mixing pattern are quite dependent on the local flow characteristics during the rapid decay of mean concentration. However, the small scale mixing seems to be independent on the local turbulent velocity fluctuation.
The first-order conditional moment closure (CMC) model is applied to $CH_4$/Air turbulent jet diffusion flames(Sandia Flame D, E and F). The flow and mixing fields are calculated by fast chemistry assumption and a beta function pdf for mixture fraction. Reacting scalar fields are calculated by elliptic CMC formulation. The results for Flame D show reasonable agreement with the measured conditional mean temperature and mass fractions of major species, although with discrepancy on the fuel rich side. The discrepancy tends to increase as the level of local extinction increases. Second-order CMC may be needed for better prediction of these near-extinction flames.
