  • Accurate Prediction of a supersonic missile base drag continues to defy even well-rounded CFD codes. In an effort to address the accuracy and predictability of the base drags, the influence of grid system and competitive turbulence models on the base drag is analyzed. Characteristics of some turbulence models is reviewed through incompressible turbulent flow over a flat plate, and performance for the base drag prediction of several turbulence models such as Baldwin-Lomax(B-L), Spalart-Allmaras(S-A), $\kappa-\epsilon$, $\kappa-\omega$ model is assessed. When compressibility correction is injected into the S-A model, prediction accuracy of the base drag is enhanced. The NSWC wind tunnel test data are utilized for comparison of CFD and semi-empirical codes on the accuracy of base drag predictability: they are about equal, but CFD tends to perform better. It is also found that, as angle of attack of a missile with control (ins increases, even the best CFD analysis tool we have lacks the accuracy needed for the base drag prediction.

  • The characteristics of amplitudes and power spectra of X axial, Y axial, and RZ axial (i.e., body axis) wind forces on a 492 m high-rise building with a section varying along height in typical wind directions are studied via a rigid model wind tunnel test of pressure measurement. Then the corresponding mathematical expressions of power spectra of X axial (across-wind), Y axial (along-wind) and torsional wind forces in $315^{\circ}$ wind directions are proposed. The investigation shows that the mathematical expressions of wind force spectra of the main structure in across-wind and torsional directions can be constructed by the superimposition of an modified wind spectrum function and a peak function caused by turbulent flow and vortex shedding, respectively. While that in along-wind direction can only be constructed by the former and is similar to wind spectrum. Moreover, the fitted parameters of the wind load spectra of each measurement level of altitude are summarized, and the unified parametric results are obtained. The comparisons of the first three order generalized force spectra show that the proposed mathematical expressions accord with the experimental results well.

  • In order to predict trailing edge noise from a flat plate more effectively and accurately, the prediction algorithm based on semi-analytic model for point pressure spectrum is proposed. The semi-analytic model consists of empirical models for point pressure spectra and theoretical model to determine the boundary layer characteristics needed for the empirical models. The proposed methods are applied to predict the trailing edge noise of the flat plate located in the mean flow of speed 38 m/s, for which the measured data are available. In present study, six empirical models for point pressure spectra are utilized for the predictions of trailing edge noise and their prediction results are compared to the measured data. Through the analysis of these comparisons, it is revealed that the present method based on non-frozen formula using Efimtsov model and Smol'yakov-Tkachenko model can provide more accurate and efficient predictions of trailing edge noise.

  • Performance of array sonars towed underwater is limited due to the self-noise induced mainly by the strumming vibration of the towing cable and also turbulent flow around the acoustic sensor module. The vibration of the towing cable generates axisymmetric waves that propagate along the acoustic module of the array sonar and produce self-noise. The present study aims to investigate the characteristics of the self-noise induced by the axisymmetric vibrations of the acoustic module. The waves of interest are the bulge and extensional waves propagating along the fluid-filled elastic hose. Dispersion relations of these waves are predicted by means of the numerical simulation to evaluate the wave speeds. The self-noise induced by the axisymmetric waves are formulated taking into account the damping of the elastic hose and the effect of the damping is investigated.

  • A boundary-layer pump with a single disk has been experimented to obtain its characteristic curve by changing the impeller of a centrifugal pump to a single disk. The primary objective to use of these types of pumps is to avoid hurting water life during transportation unnecessarily. The change of impeller should degrade the performance of pump, so we used the method to increase the roughness on the disk with sandpaper and mesh. The enhancement of shear force from the rotation of disk to the internal flow brought an augmentation of momentum transport, and the characteristics were far improved from the original single-disk pump without decreasing the survival rate of water life in the case of Pseudobagrus fulvidraco (bullhead fish). However, in the case of Artemia cyst (zooplankton), the survival rate was very degraded due to the micro scale smaller than turbulent eddy size. The result of this study could be used for the design of transportation and bio-filtering of water lying on a specific bandwidth of its scale of size.

  • Turbulent flow and thermal fields of gaseous hydrogen/liquid oxygen flames at supercritical pressure are investigated by turbulence models. The modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong (SRK) EOS is implemented into the flamelet model to realize real-fluid combustions. For supercritical fluid flows, the modified pressure-velocity-density coupling are introduced. Based on the algorithm, the relative performance of six convection schemes and the predictions of four turbulence models are compared. The selected turbulence models are needed to be modified to consider various characteristics of real-fluid combustions.

  • Experiments have been conducted to determine the flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimensional turbulent wall attaching offset jet at different oblique angles to a flat surface. The distributions of the wall static pressure coefficient and time-averaged reattachment position for various offset ratios and oblique angles have been measured. The local Nusselt number distributions on the plate surface were also measured using liquid crystal as a temperature indicator. The new hue-capturing technique utilizing a true color image processing system was used to accurately determine the temperature of the liquid crystal. The experiments were carried out at Reynolds number, Re (based on D) of from 7300 to 21,300 with offset ratio, H/D from 2.5 to 10, and oblique angle, .alpha. from 0 deg. to 400 deg..

  • The experiment was performed at the large wind tunnel of the Chungnam National University to measure the velocity distribution around the stern of a Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier model. The data, mean velocity vectors of turbulent shear flows at the stern and near-wake including the propeller plane, were obtained by a five-hole Pilot tube for the double body model fixed inside the wind tunnel test section. The present result of the double body model shows a close agreement with the result of the lowing tank experiment performed by the KRISO for the same ship model. The characteristics of the LNG stern flow are discussed based on the measured velocity distribution. The data can be very useful for the validation of some numerical methods in computational fluid dynamics.

  • Wind plays an important role in cases of unexpected radioactive pollutant dispersion, deciding distribution and concentration of the leaked substance. The accurate prediction of wind has been challenging in numerical weather prediction models, especially near the surface because of the complex interaction between turbulent flow and topographic effect. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of atmospheric dispersion of radioactive material (i.e. 137Cs) according to the simulated boundary layer around the HANARO research nuclear reactor in Korea using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)-Mesoscale Model Interface (MMIF)-California Puff (CALPUFF) model system. We examined the impacts of orographic drag on wind field, stability calculation methods, and planetary boundary layer parameterizations on the dispersion of radioactive material under a radioactive leaking scenario. We found that inclusion of the orographic drag effect in the WRF model improved the wind prediction most significantly over the complex terrain area, leading the model system to estimate the radioactive concentration near the reactor more conservatively. We also emphasized the importance of the stability calculation method and employing the skillful boundary layer parameterization to ensure more accurate low atmospheric conditions, in order to simulate more feasible spatial distribution of the radioactive dispersion in leaking scenarios.
